UNC Athletics Turns It Pink! Thanks to all who participated in the department-wide Pink Out on Oct. 23. Staffers and student-athletes worked, worked out, practiced and played in pink to support the fight against cancer. The Carolina rowing team (above, left) spent the day erging (and selling t-shirts) in The Pit as part of the Row for the Cure campaign. The Tar Heels have set a goal to raise $6,000 before competing this weekend at the Head of the Chattahoochee regatta, and so far they re at $5,100. Want to help provide some extra Halloween fun for patients at UNC Children s Hospital and support our student-athletes as they serve the community? Here s an easy way to do it: Tar Heel student-athletes will visit the hospital on Thursday to celebrate Halloween with kids there, and staff members can help by chipping in non-candy, trick-or-treat-friendly items (Halloween pencils, stickers, etc.). Please drop any donations by Wednesday in the collection boxes at the EWAC front desk or on the second floor at Loudermilk. What is needed BEFORE an Official Visit: Coaches submit the Official Visit Approval Form (at least 5 days prior to visit) Coaches submit a transcript and appropriate test scores The prospect must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center The prospect must be placed on UNC s Institutional Request List (IRL) (handled by Compliance staff) Continued on page 5 Ernie Williamson Award Winners Congratulations to Kathy Duffy, Knox Pollard and Tom Sander, the 2013 recipients of the Ernie Williamson Award, which is given annually to a department member or members who best exemplify the spirit of the late Ernie Williamson. The award s criteria states: A winner of the Ernie Williamson Award will have an unquestioned love and loyalty for the University, the Department, and our student-athletes. This love and loyalty will be demonstrated by an inspirational work ethic, an encouraging demeanor, and the respect and admiration of his/her coworkers. This trio certainly fits the bill. In nominating them for the award, here are some of the things that coworkers said about them: Kathy always has a can-do, get it done attitude. She works hard and works smart, all with a smile on her face and with the best of intentions and results. In addition to her daily work in Facilities, she also is a tireless worker for the Event Management team. Tom puts in tireless work on behalf of the women s soccer student-athletes and coaches. His daily contributions are crucial to the success of the program. Knox is a prime example that when it comes to working, age is not a factor when you love what you do. He is always happy and upbeat. He loves this university and all that it stands for. Not only is he a true Tar Heel during working hours, he always showed his support of our great university by attending outside functions and athletic events. Every university needs a Knox Pollard, but fortunately for us, only WE get the privilege of having him on our staff. Department News Wedding Bells Congratulations to Shane Parrish (Equipment), who married Erin Horner on July 13. The wedding took place at Palisades Country Club in Charlotte, and the two honeymooned in Turks and Caicos. Erin works as on-site human resources manager for Headway Workforce Solutions. Congratulations to Stacey Harris Warner (Carmichael Arena), who married Ryan Warner on Aug. 31 at Willow Oaks Plantation in her hometown of Eden, N.C. Ingrid Sagula, wife of Joe Sagula (Volleyball), performed the ceremony. The Warners honeymooned in the Dominican Republic. Ryan works for the Chapel Hill Fire Department. Congratulations to Abbey Doran Temple (Athletic Communications), who married Zach Temple on Oct. 5 in Chapel Hill. Catherine Mitchell, softball director of operations (see page 5!), was a bridesmaid. Zach and Abbey both are UNC grads, Zach in 2010 and Abbey in 2011 (undergrad) and 2013 (sport admin master s program). Zach works at the Autism Society of North Carolina in Raleigh. Erin and Shane Parrish Ryan and Stacey Warner Abbey and Zach Temple Brady and Jackson Hoots Warm Welcomes Mark Kimmel has joined the Athletic Communications staff, working primarily with women s basketball, men s soccer and women s tennis. He brings to Chapel Hill 12 years of experience in the field, including the past seven years at NC State. A graduate of St. Bonaventure University with a degree in journalism and mass communications, Kimmel also spent time at UNC Greensboro, the University of Delaware and The College of Saint Rose. Kimmel and his wife Michele are the parents of two boys, Andrew and Bryson. Aaron Workman has joined the swimming and diving staff as an assistant coach. Workman, most recently an assistant coach at Penn State, is UNC s primary coach for speed-oriented swimmers as well as working with all aspects of the Tar Heel aquatics program. Workman joined the Nittany Lion staff in 2010-11, coaching there the past three years. He coached previously at four other schools after a decorated swimming career of his own at the University of Kentucky. Workman earned his Bachelor of Science degree in broadcasting from Kentucky in 2001. He is married to former Kentucky All-American swimmer Jaime Siegele. The couple has two children, Molly (5) and Macon (3). Nicole Alexander has joined the Sports Medicine department and will serve as the Head Athletic Trainer for the women s basketball and swimming & diving teams. A native of Tallahassee, Fla., Alexander is a 2005 graduate of the University of Florida and earned her master s in exercise science from Syracuse in 2008. Prior to coming to Chapel Hill, she spent five years at Notre Dame as an Assistant Athletic Trainer. During her time there she was responsible for the softball and the men s and women s fencing teams. As a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at Syracuse, she worked with the field hockey, tennis, rowing and track & field teams. The Academic Support Staff has welcomed several new faces over recent months: Greg Beatty has joined the staff as an Academic Counselor, working primarily with football. A native of Bound Brook, N.J., he is a UNC graduate and went on to Texas for his master s degree. Following a year as an intern at NC State, he spent five years at Virginia Tech before returning to Chapel Hill. Mike Greene has joined the staff as an Academic Counselor, working primarily with the men s lacrosse, women s tennis, gymnastics and softball teams. A native of Stafford, Va., he is a graduate of James Madison (undergrad) and VCU (master s) and comes to UNC after spending the past five years at Indiana. He and his wife, Sarah, have one daughter, Hannah, who is 2. Benefits Free Online Training Available Unlimited free access to the online video training library lynda.com is now available to all University faculty and staff. Carolina has licensed lynda.com s library of more than 1,900 software, career development and technology training titles that faculty and staff can access from anywhere using an Internet browser and Onyen log-in. The online courses, taught by industry experts, working professionals and veteran teachers, use video tutorials to help people learn the latest tools and techniques in business, digital media, design and development. The library includes courses on software produced by Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, Blackboard, Facebook, Google, HTML, Microsoft, Open Source, SPSS, Twitter and others. Each online course is divided into segments, and people can watch only the portion that s needed to answer a question or brush up on a new feature, or they can view the entire course. The service keeps track of what people have viewed and, upon completion of a course, automatically generates a certificate. Faculty and staff can use lynda.com to: Gain or enhance Excel skills in courses that range from beginning to advanced; Find out how to put together better presentations or learn new presentation tools through courses on PowerPoint, Prezi, Captivate and others. Discover a little inspiration through the series called The Creative Spark in which poets, musicians, artists and designers share their work and motivations. Human Resources Enrollment Deadline Extended The State Health Plan and NCFlex have decided to extend the benefits enrollment period due to the large number of State employees who have not yet taken action regarding their benefits. The enrollment period will now be extended through Friday, Nov. 15. Because University benefits are also included in this enrollment period, the enrollment period for MetLife and Reliance Standard AD&D plans also will be extended. Employees will now have until Nov. 15 to take action on their benefits. As a reminder, all current State Health Plan members (and their dependents) will be moved to the Traditional 70/30 Plan if they do not take action to enroll in either the Enhanced 80/20 Plan or the Consumer Directed Health Plan. The State Health Plan has also created a video to address frequently asked questions about the new Consumer Directed Health Plan option. State Health Plan members who have not taken action as of Oct. 17 will receive a postcard about this extension in the mail at their home address. Give! (Please) Carolina Cares, Carolina Shares Carolina employees proved that Tar Heels Give More last year by raising more than any other campaign for the State Employees Combined Campaign. Organizers hope the Carolina community will donate even more this year and have set a goal of $1 million. UNC employees donated $894,533 last year. In the first three weeks of this year s nine-week campaign, Carolina employees donated $213,897. Gov. Jim Hunt established the SECC in 1984 to encourage state employees to donate to charities. The charities are reviewed and approved for participation each year. More than 1,000 charities are eligible this year. Your gifts to the Carolina Cares charitable giving campaign have promoted positive change in our community and our state, and helped to turn lives around, says Brenda Malone, vice chancellor for human resources and chair of the Carolina Cares, Carolina Shares campaign. The Carolina Cares, Carolina Shares campaign began Oct. 2 and continues through Dec. 6. Campaign volunteers are distributing pledge forms and giving guides. He earned a master in education in sports administration from Wichita State and currently is working toward his Ph.D. in Sports Administration from the University of New Mexico. He started in academic support at Florida Atlantic and also has been at Central Florida, Colorado State and New Mexico, where he worked from 2007-13 before coming to UNC. Ben Sheu has joined the staff as Assistant Tutor Coordinator. A native of Naperville, Ill., he is a graduate of Indiana and did graduate work at Florida Atlantic University for Educational Leadership in Higher Education. He worked as an assistant volleyball coach at Florida Atlantic from 2009-12, then served as an Academic Counselor at the school. Fond Farewells Sarah Humphries (Sports Marketing) has left UNC for a position Old Friends, New Face It s always great to have old friends come visit, and that was the case a few weekends ago as Josh and Emily (Cozart) Boone were in town for the Miami game. Even better, Josh (former business office) and Emily (former Rams Club and ticket office) brought a new friend: Mackenzine Shute Boone, born March 12. Josh is now the Assistand A.D. for Business Operations at Miami, and Emily is Donor Relations Manager for the Hurricane Club, and oversees Mackenzie Boone the Annual Fund and Hurricane Club communications. Mackenzine does a lot of crawling and waving. Great to have them back in Chapel HIll! at Navy, where she is the Assistant Director of Corporate Sponsorships. Undergraduate degree: University of Georgia, marketing major Before grad school at UNC: I served as the Event Management Program Coordinator for two years post-graduation in the University of Georgia s Athletic Association. I was the lead event manager for the varsity softball, swimming & diving, and equestrian teams. I served as the tournament director for 2011 & 2012 NCAA Softball Regionals and the 2012 SEC Equestrian Championship. I also served as a tournament assistant director for the 2012 NCAA Men s & Women s Tennis National Championship, and the 2011 SEC Track & Field Championship. Background in athletics: Apart from interning with the UGA Athletic Association after graduation, I worked as the lead timer for the UGA varsity swim teams, as well as an usher for softball. The NCAA released data Thursday for the incoming class of 2006. Carolina had 10 varsity teams that scored 100 percent, including men s and women s fencing, field hockey, women s golf, gymnastics, rowing, women s swimming and diving, men s and women s tennis and volleyball. Those programs were 10 of 15 Tar Heel teams that measured 90 percent or greater. Nineteen UNC teams scored 80 percent or better. The NCAA s Graduation Success Rate includes transfer students and student-athletes who leave in good academic standing. The current GSRs are based on the entering classes from 2003-04 to 2006-07. The national average for Graduation Success Rates was 81 percent. UNC s GSR average for male student-athletes was 80 percent, five points higher than the national average. Carolina s GSR average for female student-athletes was 93 percent, also five percentage points higher than the national norm. We want every student to graduate from Carolina and today s results indicate that our student-athletes are working hard toward reaching that goal, says Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham. There s always room to improve and we are working closely with the provost, the Academic Support Program and faculty to develop outstanding strategies in all the areas that touch our students academic lives to help them reach those goals. The release of the Graduation Success Rates is an opportunity for us to acknowledge and celebrate the academic achievements of our student-athletes, says Dr. Michelle Brown, director of the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes. We take great pride in their academic success and our University is committed to supporting them in those endeavors. Compliance: Continued from page 1 What can happen DURING an Official Visit: Official visits may not exceed 48 hours. This time period begins once the prospect arrives on the institution s campus and ends when the prospect departs campus. No expenses may be provided to the prospect beyond the 48-hour window, nor may UNC pay expenses if the prospect either arrives early or stays later for personal reasons. During the official visit, the institution may pay for the prospect s lodging and meal expenses. It is permissible for the institution to cover the cost of up to three meals per day for the prospective student-athlete and his or her parents, legal guardians, spouse, or children. A current student-athlete who is designated as a student host may receive a maximum of $40 for each day of the visit to cover any costs associated with entertaining the prospect. What is needed AFTER an Official Visit: Coaches submit Guidelines for Prospective Student-Athletes Form Coaches submit Student-Athlete Host Entertainment Form Both the Guidelines Form and the Host Entertainment Form must be submitted no later than one week after the visit has taken place.
