CPNRE & Temporary Registration FAQ s Please read this thoroughly and keep for your records. What is Temporary Registration? Temporary Registration is short term; not to exceed one year. This allows new graduates who have completed an approved Practical Nursing Program in Alberta to practice while they are waiting to write the national registration examination. Working or accepting employment as a LPN without having your Temporary Practice Permit is not permitted and a contravention of the Health Professions Act of Alberta. Upon successful completion of this examination the LPN is eligible for an Active Practice Permit. Temporary Registration may not be renewed. The temporary registrant is recognized as a Licensed Practical Nurse and may carry out the competencies of an entry level practitioner. How do I apply for Temporary Registration? During your Transition to Graduation Course, you will attend a CLPNA Presentation for New Graduates. During this presentation the package of forms will be given to you with supplementary documents. If you do not receive this package of forms, please contact the CLPNA to request one to be sent to you. Every effort must be made by candidates to apply on time; late applications may experience unforeseen delays in processing time. See chart on last page for specific deadline dates. Submit each of the following to CLPNA by the CPNRE Application Package Submission Deadline. CPNRE & Temporary Registration Application (green in color) Personal Declaration (white in color) Photocopy of your Birth Certificate (Canadian Passport or Permanent Residency Card can be used in place of Birth Certificate) Photocopy of your Picture Identification (Driver s License or Government Issued ID Card) Temporary Registration/CPNRE Fee this can be paid by Visa, Mastercard, Cheque, Money Order (if mailing in), Cash and debit card are accepted in person at our office. It is the CLPNA policy that registration fees are not pro-rated and are non-refundable. You will need to submit the following to your Educational Facility: Request for Official Nursing Educational Transcript form (orange in color) FAXED COPIES OF APPLICATION DOCUMENTS ARE NOT ACCEPTED The CPNRE & Temporary Registration Application Package and supporting documentation must be received by the CPNRE Application Package Submission Deadline date listed below. Registration for the CPNRE & Temporary Practice Permit issuance will not occur until CLPNA receives Official Transcripts (including date Diploma was granted) and CLPNA assesses the CPNRE Application Package. You will receive your Temporary Practice Permit in the mail after the processing is completed in office. Visit www.clpna.com/publicregistry to view your Temporary registration number. Anyone who applies to write the CPNRE, and has not completed the Practical Nurse Program by that specific CPNRE deadline date; the registration fee will be refunded and will be charged a $50 administration fee. Your application documents will be held for one year, after that time a new application package will have to be submitted. Please contact CLPNA if you have not successfully completed the Practical Nurse Program at your deadline date. I have answered yes to questions on the Personal Declaration Form, what do I do? If you have answered yes to any of the questions on the personal declaration, you are required to provide a brief description on the subject. If you have a criminal record, you must send a Criminal Record Check obtained from the RCMP with your application. You will be required to submit further documentation and your file will need to be assessed by the Director of Regulatory Services. Please contact CLPNA if you have any concerns regarding this, as answering yes to any of these questions can delay processing of your registration. When will my Temporary Registration be issued? Registration for the CPNRE & Temporary Practice Permit issuance will not occur until CLPNA receives Official Transcripts (including date Diploma was granted) and CLPNA assesses the CPNRE Application Package. Assessment can take 1-5 business days. When will I get a tax receipt for these fees? The official tax receipt for the Temporary Registration and Examination Fee is attached to your Temporary Practice Permit. If you are rewriting the CPNRE, the official tax receipt is mailed to you once CLPNA processes the rewrite payment. Duplicate copies of the receipts are available for a nominal charge. When do I write the CPNRE? Can I change the date I write? It is CLPNA policy that you write the CPNRE at the first available opportunity upon completion of the practical nurse program. Please refer to the chart on the last page to determine when you would write the exam. If you have extenuating circumstances that affect the date you are to write the CPNRE (ie: Illness, Pregnancy, Family Emergency), please contact CLPNA and request Compassionate Leave from the exam date. If you are granted compassionate leave, it will not be counted as a missed write or a fail. Can I write the CPNRE in another Province? You can request to write the CPNRE in another Province. It is asked on your application forms where you want to write the CPNRE. If you are moving to another province after you are done the PN Program, please contact CLPNA for direction on how to register for your exam. All Alberta students are required to register for the CPNRE with CLPNA. When will I get my exam identification card and writing center information? This information is mailed out to all candidates that are registered for the CPNRE approximately 1 month before the exam date. If you do not receive anything in the mail by 2 weeks before the exam date, call CLPNA promptly. CPNRE & Temporary Registration FAQ s Page 2 of 5
Please ensure you notify CLPNA of any address changes, as this is the responsibility of the member. You must show picture identification to be admitted into the exam room. Acceptable forms of identification are: valid passport, driver s license, age of majority card, Canadian Permanent Residence card, Canadian citizenship card or student identification card. Are there materials available to assist with studying for the CPNRE? The exam testing agency, ASI, has developed two tools to assist candidates with preparing for the CPNRE. CPNRE Predictor Test & CPNRE Prep Guide. They are both available to purchase online at www.cpnre.ca Please visit that website for more information; CLPNA does not have these items on hand to purchase. What measures are in place to deter cheating on the CPNRE? The exam is monitored by Invigilators, they are hired by CLPNA to administer the CPNRE which includes closely monitoring the exam that day and taking care of the exam test books and answer sheets. Suspicious behavior by candidates during the exam will not be accepted and if you are suspected of cheating or acting suspiciously during the exam you may be moved seats or may be asked to leave. During the exam if you suspect someone of cheating, please inform an Invigilator or call the ASI cheating hotline after the exam (this information is on your Candidate ID card). Cheating on the CPNRE is not tolerated by ASI or CLPNA and is a very serious offense. If a candidate is caught cheating on the CPNRE, measures will be taken by CLPNA. I have a documented learning disability, how do I apply for Special Accommodations for the CPNRE? Requests for Special Accommodations must be submitted in writing together with your application by the Deadline to Apply date of the examination (See chart below for specific deadlines). Your written request should indicate the nature of the accommodations you require. Upon receipt of your application and request, CLPNA will send out a letter indicating what further information is required to assess your application. In most cases, we require the following information: As stated above, a written request must be sent in by the candidate indicating the nature of the accommodations requested for the CPNRE. Also, it must identify role expectations of a Licensed Practical Nurse, and if the candidate is mentally and physically capable to meet those demands. This request is normally one to two pages in length. A formal diagnosis from a regulated health professional on the specific disability including a documentation completed and signed by a professional familiar with the candidate s disability and how it relates to the need for special accommodations in a test situation and the how the disability would impact nursing practice. (Please provide an Educational Psychological Report within the last 3 years) Evidence from the Practical Nurse Program Chair that Special Accommodations were provided throughout the education program. Documentation must indicate whether the clinical instructors are confident the student can provide safe and competent care in any health care setting. This request can be mailed, faxed or emailed to CLPNA. Extensions cannot be given on the Special Accommodations deadline dates, ensure you contact CLPNA at least four (4) months before the CPNRE date. CPNRE & Temporary Registration FAQ s Page 3 of 5
When will I get my exam results? Results are mailed to all candidates approximately 5 weeks after the exam date. If you are unsuccessful on the exam, your results are sent by registered mail. Results are given in a pass or fail format and CLPNA does not give results over the phone, in person, via email or fax. Please do not call CLPNA inquiring on your exam results. I was unsuccessful on the exam, what happens now? Candidates who fail to obtain a pass mark must re-write the exam at the next scheduled sitting. In the results package that is sent to candidates, there will be a re-write application form that needs to be filled out and submitted with payment to the CLPNA by the deadline date indicated. Candidates are given no more than 3 opportunities to write the CPNRE. My Practice Permit has expired before I have passed the CPNRE, how do I get my Practice Permit again? Upon receipt of the successful CPNRE results, CLPNA will send you a reinstatement package to apply for reinstatement of your Practice Permit. You will be required to complete the package and pay the required fee to apply for reinstatement. I was unsuccessful on the CPNRE for the third time, what happens now? If a candidate is unsuccessful on the third attempt, Temporary Registration will be revoked immediately and the candidate s current employer will be notified. The candidate may apply to take the Practical Nurse Re-Entry program. For more information on the Re-Entry Program, contact the Practical Nurse College directly. Upon successful completion of this program, the candidate will be granted their fourth and final attempt to write the CPNRE. I wrote the CPNRE in September, why do I have to renew my practice permit after I pass the exam? When a candidate successfully passes the CPNRE in September, they are required to renew their Active Practice Permit for the coming year before the deadline of December 1. When you pass the CPNRE the Temporary Registration transfers to an Active Registration (with a new expiry date of December 31). All Active Registrations are due for renewal before December 1 st of every year. Annual Registration Renewal Information Expect your Registration Renewal Information Letter to arrive by email before September 30. According to the Health Professions Act, members are responsible to notify CLPNA of any changes to their contact information such as address, phone number and email address. What is my Scope of Practice with a Temporary License? The temporary registrant is recognized as a Licensed Practical Nurse and may carry out the competencies of an entry level practitioner.
