2005 Preview SET FOR SIX? Missouri is one of only three schools in the Big 12 that have made the last five NCAA Tournaments The Missouri Volleyball program has experienced a sort of renaissance in the past five years. Crawling from the dark ages of the Big 12, struggling to only four of five conference wins a season, perennially in the basement of the league, the tides turned in 2000. Susan and Wayne Kreklow arrived on the scene and instantly changed Mizzou Volleyball forever. Missouri went from a 10-21 team in 1999, ninth in the Big 12, to a 24-7 sleeper in 2000, placing runner-up in a stunned conference. Now as the Kreklows enter their sixth year in charge of the Tiger ship, they lead a team with national-recognition and conference respect. So much respect in fact, that the coaches of the Big 12 predicted the Tigers would finish second in the 2005 conference standings. Missouri comes off a 2004 season that saw them reach their fifth-straight NCAA Tournament, only two schools in the conference, Mizzou and Nebraska, have made volleyball s Big Dance every year since 2000. The Tigers return six of seven starters for the 2005 season, including AVCA Second- Team All-American Lindsey Hunter and All-Central Region team member Jessica Vander Kooi. Both Hunter and Vander Kooi also earned preseason All-Big 12 honors. Susan Kreklow eclipsed both the 600-win mark for her coaching career and the 100- win mark at Mizzou in 2004, recording a winning percentage over the.700-mark while at Missouri. OUTSIDE HITTER Senior Shen Danru is the oldest of now four Chinese-born players on the Tiger roster. The Tigers first import from the Eastern Hemisphere has come onto her own in the past three years, racking up numbers that no other Tiger has before. A strong presence on the court, Danru is Missouri s all-time leader in kills per game and total attacks. Danru will be threatening the Tigers all-time records in kills, service aces, and digs during her final season. Junior Jessica Vander Kooi has been able to be a great all-around player for the Tigers thus far in her career. As an outside hitter, Vander Kooi has posted five matches of 20 kills or more. Maybe more impressively, Vander Kooi has had 38 matches in which she s in double-digits in digs, totaling 29 double-doubles in her career. Against Idaho in 2004, she came within one block of a triple-double, recording nine total blocks, 12 kills, and 11 digs. The conference coaches have been eyeballing Vander Kooi this summer, placing her on the Big 12 s preseason all-conference list. In addition to grabbing All-Big 12 honors in 2004, Vander Kooi earned All-Central Region honors, being placed on the honorable mention team. In 2003, she was named AVCA Central Region Freshman of the Year. Sophomore Na Yang put up some impressive numbers in her first year as a Tiger outside hitter in 2004. Starting in 12 of the Tigers matches, Yang had nine matches with double-digit kill totals and four killdig double-doubles. In her career opener at Wisconsin, Yang posted 14 kills and 14 digs. Incoming freshman Yi Zhang has been on the Chinese National Beach Volleyball team in both 2002 and 2003 and will add more depth at that position. SETTER Senior Lindsey Hunter in the past three years has established herself as one of the best setters in the collegiate ranks and in the country. For the past two years, Hunter has been on the U.S. National A2 team and has represented her country in several tournaments. In 2004, Hunter was named to the second-team of the AVCA All-America list. Danru recorded 15 double-doubles on the season, pushing her career total to 53. In 80 matches over her career, Danru has recorded at least 10 kills and only missed doing so in four matches in 2004. 5

2005 Preview For three years running, Hunter has led the Big 12 in assists, being named to the All-Big 12 first team twice. Hunter was also an Academic All-Big 12 selection in the past two years and in 2005 finds herself on the preseason All-Big 12 team. In 2004, Hunter recorded 14.43 assists per game, the fourth-best total in the nation. Hunter has an accuracy that is hard to match, and gives the Tigers the advantage more times than not when placing the ball. Hunter also has been known to sneak attacks when teams are least expecting. During a win a Wisconsin last year, Hunter recorded seven kills and had a.462 hitting percentage. Also at Wisconsin, Hunter had five block assists, a feat she s accomplished four other times during her career. When getting a palm on the ball, Hunter rarely eclipses one error per match. She posted a.344 hitting percentage during the 2004 season and has a career average of.263. In her career, Hunter has also grabbed double-digits in digs in 31 matches. Freshman Lei Wang will be Hunter s understudy during the season. Wang is one of two incoming freshman from China. Wang was part of the Chinese Junior National Team for two years before coming to the States. MIDDLE BLOCKER Senior Lisa Boyd has a lot to look forward to in 2005. In 2004, she led the nation and was in the top 25 in the nation in overall hitting percentage with a.384 average. The total also broke Mizzou s all-time record in the category. In fact, Boyd had seven matches in when her final hitting percentage totaled above.500. Maybe one of Boyd s most impressive efforts came against No. 15 Texas A&M in October. Boyd recorded a career-high 21 kills, posting a.486 hitting percentage, also grabbing five blocks in the 3-1 Tiger win. Over her career, Boyd has had 13 matches in which she has recorded over five total blocks and 31 matches in which she has earned over 10 kills. Junior Nicole Wilson had a great 2004 season and has looked impressive in the 2005 workouts. Last season, Wilson was third in the Big 12 in hitting percentage, posting a.375 average. Starting in all but one match last year, Wilson posted a.300 hitting average in 20 of those matches. Wilson had nine matches in which totaled five or more blocks last season adding to eight matches from her freshman year in which she played in every match. 6 Nicole Wilson s sister Megan will also join the team in 2005. Listed as an opposite side hitter, Megan was the National Christian School Player of the Year in 2004 at Lincoln Christian High School. Redshirt Sophomore Melissa Allbery is a hard worker, hustling with every play during practice and she will provide support in the middle when needed. Freshman Amanda Hantouli comes to Missouri with all-state honors from Nebraska in 2003, leading the state in blocking average (1.6). DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST/LIBERO Sophomore Tatum Ailes busted on to the scene as a freshman last year starting all 29 of the team s matches as libero, recording season school records in total digs and digs per game. Her 432 total digs in 2004 were helped by 15 matches in which she recorded 15 digs or more. Ailes finished the Big 12 season third in the conference in digs per game (4.29) and is currently tops at Mizzou in career digs per game (4.19). Ailes is not shy or timid on the court, going full celebration mode whenever the Tigers score a point. Junior Abbie Booth will also provide critical defensive skills in the back row again for the Tigers in 05. Booth became a regular in the Tigers starting lineup in late-september of last season and has since recorded four matches with over 10 digs. Against Texas A&M at home last year, Booth had a career-high 19 digs. Booth is also a serving threat, recording three aces on the road at both Baylor and Iowa State last year. Redshirt freshman Jilly Jaksich will provide help in the back row at various times during the season, coming from the same high school as Lindsey Hunter. At Papillion-LaVista High School, Jaksich helped her team to three state championship games from 2001 to 2003. Another freshman at that position will be Sarah Entzeroth. A four-time all-district and all-conference selection at St. Louis area s Duchesne High School, Entzeroth was listed to prepvolleyball.com s thirdteam of Gym Dandies: Best Defensive Players of the Land in 2004. Tiger Volleyball Camps Each summer, hundreds of young ladies come to Columbia to take part in the Mizzou Volleyball Camps. In 2005,over 900 campers attended the Mizzou Volleyball Camps. Five separate camps are offered by the Tigers. A team camp offers competitive team-play and on-court coaching sessions for both varsity and junior varsity levels. Two All-Skills Camps are offered which cover skills for all levels on all facets of the game. The Specialty Camp focuses on advanced skill development by position and is a great camp for the intermediate to advanced player. The Elite Camp is geared toward the more experienced, high school aged, college-bound athlete and is a comprehensive camp that covers techniques, strength and conditioning, nutrition and much more. Camp information, brochures and registration information can be found on the official website of Mizzou Athletics, www.mutigers. com, then click on Volleyball and select camps. 8 For updated 2006 Missouri Volleyball Camp information, visit mutigers.com
