Lke many others who knew or worked closely wth Munster, Jean Lent Ponsetto, athletcs drector at DePaul, was surprsed by the sze of the gfts but not the generosty. Father Munster saw t as an nvestment n DePaul and wanted to ensure there would be lastng gfts to support young women for many generatons, she says. Scholarshp memoralzes labor attorney and DePaul footballer From hs days playng DePaul football through hs career as a Chcago labor lawyer, the late Hon. James F. Hynan (JD 35) remaned grateful to DePaul for the football scholarshp that enabled hm to attend college durng the Great Depresson. Recently, hs wdow, Rosemary Hynan, gave $100,000 to the DePaul Unversty College of Law to create the Honorable James F. Hynan Endowed Scholarshp, whch wll be awarded begnnng n the 2008-2009 academc year to students demonstratng academc excellence. The scholarshp s meant to honor Jm and help other law students receve an educaton, says Rosemary. Jm s famly wouldn t have been able to send hm to college wthout the DePaul football scholarshp. James began hs college career at Loyola Unversty n Chcago but transferred to DePaul when Loyola elmnated ts football program and scholarshps. DePaul opened ts arms to several Loyola football players and provded them wth a wonderful educaton, says Rosemary. Durng World War II, James commanded gun crews and communcaton personnel on merchant shps brngng supples to alles n Europe. In 1995, he was presented the The Hon. James F. Hynan (JD 35) n 1995 Russan Commemoratve Medal for hs courage. After the war, James rose to Navy leutenant commander and served as defense counsel n general courts-martal cases at naval ar tranng bases n Texas. Subsequently, James served as a prncpal n Condon & Hynan untl hs retrement n 1994 and as a Cook County Law Dvson arbtrator. He s survved by hs wfe, three sons, a daughter and fve grandchldren. Jacque Jack Ducharme Named for Jacque Jack Ducharme, a company vce charman and former head of ts Chcago offce who ded n December 2007, the endowment wll fund research pertanng to the commercal real estate ndustry and wll be admnstered through the college s Real Estate Center. The gft ncreases the center s endowment to more than $10.5 mllon. Ths s a great honor for a great man, says Studley Presdent Mchael Colacno. Jacque was a mentor to so many people n the commercal real estate ndustry. Frances Flood Frances Flood (LAS 44), a frst-generaton college student from an mmgrant famly, was the only female chemstry major n her class. Why and when dd you start gvng to DePaul? Flood: Because of the good educaton that DePaul gave me. After I graduated, I contrbuted every year. I probably started wth $5 a year, but there were some years when we could be more generous. What motvated you to establsh an endowed scence scholarshp? Flood: It seemed to me the approprate way to contrbute. I ddn t receve scholarshp support, but I thnk helpng someone else get through college s mportant. Tuton s so much more expensve now. Why dd you elect to fund the scholarshp through a chartable gft annuty?
