Running Head: RN TO BSN PLAN RN to BSN Plan Laura Kraszewski, RN Ferris State University
RN TO BSN PLAN 2 This paper is Laura Kraszewski s plan to complete her Bachelor s Degree in Nursing. She has described her timeline for completing her degree, how her schooling will be funded, and how she will handle any obstacles that may take place. Included in the document are two Appendices located at the end of the paper.
RN TO BSN PLAN 3 Completing my Bachelors of Science in Nursing has been a goal of mine since I graduated in 2006 with my Associates Degree in Nursing. I have continuously been encouraged to pursue my BSN degree by many of my employers. This semester I decided to take that leap, to advance my career. Here is my plan to complete my bachelor s degree. The timeline I would like to follow is found on Ferris State University s website as referenced. I am planning on completing the Part-time Accelerated portion. This entails a total of 5 semesters, taking 7-10 credits in a semester. Of course, if I can complete my degree sooner, I will. This outline gives a great resource for taking nursing courses with other courses needed to complete my degree. Fortunately, 41 of my credits from previous colleges have transferred to Ferris State University, so I am only in need of 12 additional credit hours (not included in my nursing classes). My advisor, Dionn Serges, has provided me with exceptional guidance to begin my journey to my BSN. Located in Appendix A is my outlined course plans in a spreadsheet form. She has done a great job completing this for me and keeping me up to date with changes that need to be made. She not only has prepared this guideline for me, but has been a great help in answering questions about the BSN program at Ferris (and giving me encouragement). The 12 credit hours that I need to complete that are non-nursing courses will apply to the overall credit needed to complete my bachelor s degree. I am currently enrolled in ENGL 321, which is Advanced Composition. I still need to complete Epidemiology & Statistics (CCHS 315), a communications elective for 3 credits, and a cultural enrichment class at the 300+ level. Most of my degree advancement will be funded by student loans or out-of-pocket payment. Therefore, I have investigated which courses I can take at the local community college.
RN TO BSN PLAN 4 Delta College is very close to my home, so this is the college I chose to research. I found that I can take my communications elective and cultural enrichment class at Delta and they credits will fully transfer (COMM 221, LITR 312). My BSN will be my gateway to my ultimate goal: Nurse Practioner vs. Nursing Education. I am still trying to decide which venue of advanced level nursing practice I would like to complete once finished with my BSN. I have looked into Ferris State University s Nurse Education program and am interested. Saginaw Valley State University has a great Nurse Practioner program, and so does University of Michigan. I still have more research to do as far as which programs will transfer my FSU credits from my BSN, and to make a decision which direction to take. I am hoping to have this better planned by the end of my next semester. Along the way, I am sure life will take its turn giving me obstacles to overcome. I am married and have a three year old son, so I m sure there will be many. I feel that life is going to happen when it happens, whether I am pursuing my BSN or not. I am fortunate to have a loving, supportive husband and family, and I know my husband will do everything possible to make those obstacles I will face as stress-free as possible. Life changing events that may take place could lead me to take a semester off. I have realized this and accept that it could take longer than planned to complete my degrees. Planning my BSN has helped me realize what a great adventure I am taking. I am extremely excited to complete my degree. With the help of my advisor, the support of my family, and exceptional time management, I am sure my degree will be completed in a timely manner, and with exceptional grades.
