Our communities and programs have been carefully designed to reflect what seniors want and what experts say we need as we age to stay happy, healthy, alert and socially active. Whatever a resident s lifestyle whether it s Independent Living, Assisted Living or Alzheimer s Care a wide range of innovative and healthful programs is provided to benefit body, mind and spirit. Supporting these goals and programs are Ayesha Dixon, activity programs coordinator, Devi Reznik, memory programs coordinator, and our Paxxon Therapy team. Ayesha received a round of applause at last week s monthly Resident Council meeting. Along with her creativity and enthusiasm, Ayesha has introduced new programs and filled the calendar with more activities, including on weekends. It s not unusual for a resident to comment to me that It s so hard to choose! Devi oversees all memory programming for our Circle of Friends and Neighborhood residents. Coordinating the daily activities that are delivered by Activity Assistants Stephanie, Robin, Manny, Jeanna and Lia and the PALs dedicated to the Circle and Neighborhood, Devi ensures our residents remain as socially active, alert and happy as possible. Beginning in January, Paxxon began providing exercise classes five days a week to our Neighborhood residents and three days a week to our Circle of Friends residents. Paxxon Therapy completes our trio of mind, body and spirit. Paxxon provides physical, occupational and speech therapy by licensed therapists in-house. This allows quicker, more convenient access to services for our residents. Depending on the health event, Paxxon s in-house program may reduce the amount of time our residents must stay in either the hospital or a skilled nursing facility. The number of residents attending our exercises has grown since January, and we currently have 45 residents participating in physical and occupational therapy. Mind Body Spirit Choice! You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. C.S. Lewis Happy Spring! Donna

DRCS Health Hints by Zara Occupational Therapy Make your own recovery the first priority in your life. ~ Robin Norwood It s time to celebrate April as National Occupational Therapy month. Occupational therapy (OT) helps people across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities. Occupational therapy helps people recovering from injury to regain skills and provides support for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes. OT typically includes an individual evaluation to determine the goals, intervention to improve the person s ability to perform daily activities and outcomes evaluation to ensure that the goals are being met and make changes to the intervention plan. Falls are the leading cause of injury in adults over the age of 65. Clutter and other tripping hazards, poor balance and distractions can all cause a person to stumble and fall. Some people become so afraid of falling that they stop doing the things they used to enjoy. An occupational therapy practitioner uses your daily activities as the basis of therapy to help ensure that you can safely do the things you want and need to do. Your mental, physical and emotional well-being is important to the Belmont Village family! Purim 2013 To celebrate Purim and the mitzvah spelled out in the Book of Esther, we invited over Sinai Temple. We shared stories and the reason we give out hamentashen.
