U.S. Navy - FabLab NAVAIR: SECNAV: Direct Call to Harness Collec1ve Energy of Navy s Warfighters and Workforce Strategic Objec1ve: It s All About the Ships Fostering a: Culture of Affordability Navy requirement for a mobile Fabrica1on Laboratory (FabLab) to Demonstrate the emerging capabili1es of addi1ve manufacturing and to Harness the ideas and skills of each Sailor 5

U.S. Navy - FabLab Why a FabLab: FabLab requirement assists the Navy s Regional Maintenance Center in being the leader of the ship repair industry in all aspects of ship maintenance. The vision of the FabLab is to be$er enable competence in the maintenance and adapta1on of systems through manufacture of as-designed components or the design and manufacture of new components. 6

U.S. Navy - FabLab A FabLab: Is designed to be rela1vely inexpensive in startup and sustainment Affords deployment of equipment to the point of need due to mobility, increasing opera1onal readiness Reduces inventory of small non-cri1cal parts Moderates prototyping cost, having a direct and meaningful impact on the Navy Is designed to encourage crea1ve thought and training opportuni1es The real value in the mobile FabLab isn't necessarily crea1ng end products, but the capacity and capability to build a deckplate understanding of modeling and simula1on tools to support addi1ve and digital manufactured process in the future. 7

U.S. Navy - FabLab Benne@ Aerospace Value-Add: In development of the Mobile FabLab Plalorm, Benne$ procured, equipped, and retrofi$ed three custom trailers. FabLab equipment and safety training was conducted and trailers were delivered to: Fleet Readiness Center East (Cherry Point, NC) Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (San Diego, CA) Southeast Regional Maintenance Center (Mayport, FL) 8

U.S. Navy - FabLab Benefits to Warfighter: The FabLab benefits the Warfighter by con1nuing to enable the collec1ve innova1on power of deckplate sailors and fleet operators by providing them with advanced fabrica1on tools and training in a risk tolerant seung. They can take their own ideas from drawing board to prototype in support of an improved and more efficient maintenance and opera1ng environment. 9

U.S. Navy - FabLab FabLab as a Teaching Tool: Through use of the FabLab, Warfighters learn how to use digital fabrica1on tools for rapid prototyping including: Electronics design and produc1on by producing circuit boards using a variety of sensors, input and output devices. Programming AVR microcontrollers on boards students have produced themselves. Molding and cas1ng, fabrica1on with composite materials, and 3D scanning and prin1ng. 10
