Can You Identify "Fake News?" Things happen very quickly these days, and the desire to share important news with others via text, e-mail, social media, or the oldfashioned way--by telling them--is normal. But in a world where "fake news" abounds, we need to be extra diligent to make sure that the news we share is accurate and credible. Here are some things to look for when reading news and, perhaps even more important, determining if this news is safe to pass on to others: Greater New York Conference GNYC ACS GNYC Youth NETS New York Conference Northeastern Conference Northeastern Conference Youth Northern New England Conference NY13 Southern New England Southern New England Youth Union Springs Academy Connect With Us Online Look carefully at the domain name and URL. An established news source will have their own domain name. Check to see if there is something added onto the end of it, for instance, com.co or [news 3
source]-tv. Verify the story with more than one source. Contact your conference, union or division communication department to ascertain its validity. Conduct a search to see if other credible news organizations are also covering the story. Double-check the news organization sending the story. Most organizations will have a lot of information about their news outlet (e.g. mission, ethics, history, etc.) under the "About" section on their home page. If that information is missing you might consider refraining from using that site as a news worthy source. If you still aren't certain about the story, or the source, please, don't share it with others. Also, inform the person who sent you the story know of your concerns.
