Dear Visitor Information Program Applicant, Thank you for your interest in this volunteer program. The Conservancy s volunteers provide visitors from all over the world with the information they need to discover the wonders of Yosemite. They are relied upon by the National Park Service to promote park stewardship and enhance visitor experience through the services they provide. They also promote the work of the Conservancy and encourage people to donate to our organization. Volunteers work in Yosemite Valley, Wawona, and Tuolumne Meadows. The volunteer season in Yosemite Valley and Wawona runs from May through September. In Tuolumne Meadows the season runs from mid-june through late September. In each of these locations, volunteers are required to work a minimum of one month. This volunteer program is one of the many benefits of donating to Yosemite Conservancy. You may become eligible for this program by donating a minimum of $25.00. Instructions for donating are below. Admission to the program is subject to passing a background check. 2011 VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITES In Yosemite Valley May: May 1 - May 31 CLOSED June: May 31 - June 29 CLOSED July: June 29 - July 27 CLOSED August: July 27 - August 29 CLOSED September August 29 - October 1 CLOSED In Wawona May: June: July: August: September: May 2 - June 1 CLOSED June 1 - June 30 CLOSED June 30 - July 28 CLOSED July 28 - August 30 CLOSED August 30 - October 1 CLOSED In Tuolumne Meadows Session 1 June 16 - July 21 CLOSED Session 2 July 21 - August 23 CLOSED Session 3 August 23 - September 22 CLOSED VOLUNTEER STATIONS In Yosemite Valley The Yurt in the Visitor Parking Area, often the first place visitors stop to ask for directions and information The Visitor Information Booth near the Wilderness Center, where volunteers greet visitors, answer questions, describe the Conservancy s mission and contribution to the Park, and encourage donations The Museum Gallery where volunteers open and close exhibits, count visitors, and answer questions The Happy Isles Nature Center where volunteers help with the interactive exhibits and staff the bookstore during employee lunch and breaks The Visitor Center where visitors are greeted and helped

The Conservancy is looking for applicants who enjoy working with people and serving the public. Excellent communication skills are needed as well as a solid knowledge of and experience with Yosemite. A strong desire to support the missions of the Conservancy and the National Park Service is expected. Because our program is in partnership with the National Park Service, a branch of the federal government, all volunteers are required to be United States citizens or permanent residents (possessing a green card). Volunteers must also be 18 years or older. We are looking for people who put the needs of others above the needs of themselves. Admission to the program is subject to passing a background check. Serving in the program is contingent on the ability to abide by the rules and regulations of the National Park Service and Yosemite Conservancy. Participants in this program experience the challenge of camping in group campsites amidst changing weather. RV spaces are limited and there are no hookups. Most volunteers camp in tents. Everyone provides their own camping gear and food and does their own cooking. Food is stored in shared bear boxes. Campground restrooms have cold water only. Showers are provided in a nearby location. Previous camping experience is strongly recommended. No pets are allowed. Visits by friends or family are reserved with volunteer program management prior to the month of service due to the number of volunteers sharing campsite spaces. Please carefully consider these aspects of the program before applying. Participants in the program receive free park entrance passes, campsites, showers, uniform shirts, and nametags. They receive a transportation stipend of $10/day worked, payable after the month of service. They receive discounts at Yosemite Conservancy sales stations and selected Delaware North Company (DNC) concessions. They may also participate in one educational Outdoor Adventure tuition-free within a year after volunteer service. MANDATORY TRAINING Prior to arrival, volunteers are trained on-line. They go through mandatory training and orientation by the Yosemite Conservancy and the National Park Service when they arrive as well as when needed. They are also provided with an orientation manual. Mentors are available for new volunteers prior to and upon arrival in order to help make the transition into the program as smooth as possible. Becoming a volunteer means

joining a team of dedicated, hearty individuals who have a passion for providing accurate assistance to visitors in the Park. DONATION AND APPLICATION PROCESS To make a donation, go to the website. Click on DONATE to choose the amount you would like to give. To make the $25 minimum donation, click on Other Amount and type $25.00 in the box. You can also call 415 434-8446, extension 317 to donate. If you would like to send a donation, mail it to Yosemite Conservancy, 155 Montgomery Street, Suite 1104, San Francisco, CA 94101. On the volunteer application there is a place for your donor number. Due to the turnaround time between making your donation and receiving your number, write Pending in place of a number. You will receive an email from me confirming receipt of your application. The Yosemite Conservancy experiences a high volume of applicants. The success of our program as well as a new volunteer s experience depends on making sure expectations are understood. If you appear to be a great match for our program, you ve made the minimum donation, and there is a volunteer position available for the time and location you wish to serve, you will be contacted to participate in a phone interview. The pages below contain a Visitor Information Volunteer Description and an Application. Please send or fax your completed application to the Yosemite Conservancy using the contact information below. For security purposes, please do not email your application. If after reading the Frequently Asked Questions, you need additional information, feel free to contact me. Thank you again for your interest in joining our exceptional group of volunteers! Sincerely, Suzy Hasty Volunteer Program Manager Yosemite Conservancy PO Box 230, El Portal, CA 95318-0230 209 379-2317 extension 14; Fax: 209-379-2486 shasty@yosemiteconservancy.org
