Energy Efficiency in SMEs hotels in Europe Accommodation sector has a key role and great potential to respond to the Climate Change challenges. Europe has 5.45 million hotel rooms, nearly 50% of the world total 90% of the European SMEs hotel enterprises 200.000) belong to the SMEs sector Energy efficiency is a pending issue in the hotel sector which needs to respond efficiently to the lack of capacity and resources by improving training, building awareness, stimulating innovation as well as public and sector/industry involvement. The EETI project aims to propose solutions to the industry by fostering the energy efficiency and the renewable energy use as instruments for increased competitiveness, sustainability, efficient management and investment.
Project Background The EETI Project was initiatediti t The duration of the project by the UNWTO Business is 30 months. Council that responded to a call for proposals of the EACI in June 2007. The total project cost approved is 1.148.092,00 The UNWTO built up a strong consortium with the key partners including UNEP, EREC, ADEME and IH&RA. Funding Scheme: The project was submitted in September 2007 and in March 2008 it was included in the EACI s Reserve List. After successful negotiations, 25%=UNWTO UNWTO, the Grant Agreement was signed on 1 August 2008. UNEP, EREC, ADEME, IH&RA 75%=EACI
EETI Modus Operandi To achieve its objectives, the EETI will: Develop tools and materials to assist SME hotels to plan for and invest in EE & RET Disseminatei these tools and materials to SME hotels across the European Union Promote exchanges of know-how, experience and good practices between SME hotels as energy users, EE & RET suppliers and manufacturers, consumers and other key actors

Project Scope Evaluation of current EE & RET use and practices in SME hotels and their needs Development of user-friendly toolkit on EE & RET for SME hotels. The toolkit comprises a: benchmarking tool least cost planning methodology to enable hotels to prioritise most cost-effective ti investments t for improvingi their EE & RET use examples of best practices in SME hotels of different types Making EE & RET more accessible to SME hotels: Assessment of EE & RET equipment, manufacturers, suppliers, range of costs and benefits of installation Identification of most suitable EE & RET for use in the EU hotel sector, including improved awareness of hotel staff and consumers Database of manufacturers and suppliers of EE & RET for the hotel sector Best practice ce guide on EE& RET use by SME hotels
Project Scope Testing the EETI programme in hotels in different pilot destinations: Generic training package that can be adapted to meet the needs of specific destinations across Europe besides pilot Use of the toolkit and formulation of EE & RET action plans by participating hotels Working with destination authorities (NTO s, DMO s) and networks to support EE & RET investment by hotels Communication and Dissemination: Project web site including regular progress reports; downloads section for project toolkit, training and communication materials Annual Conference and Partenariat - hotels, hotel associations & national tourism boards, destinations, EE & RET suppliers and manufacturers, tourism decision makers from the private and public sectors Build a European network with NTO s and DMO s and associations, to promote the project outcomes

EETI: Key Deliverables and Partnerships Online dissemination of EETI tools and materials will be strongly gy supported by NTO s/dmo s and associations which will be invited to join the End User Advisory Group (EUAG) and offered the possibility to act as project partners. These actors will be able to take the full benefit and coownership of the web-site with the commitment of having it translated in their national languages, thus raising the awareness and promoting know-how in EE and RET in tourism amongst the key stakeholders. * All tools and materials will be initially available in English and subsequently translated in other languages by committed partners on destination levels
