Lexington, KY 40503-2826 859-940-9815 leomc2@live.com 2012 Conference Highlights The Kentucky Chapter APWA 2012 State Conference kicked off with a Roadeo on October 16th, followed by a golf scramble and a reception at the Ramada Plaza in Jeffersontown. The winners of the Roadeo competition were: Backhoe Daniel Doss with the city of Frankfort Skid Steer Nick Wohleeb with Louisville Water Company Truck Combo Alex Kenwright with Kenton County Public Works Truck Serpentine Shawn Shaw with Louisville Water Company Eleven golfers participated in the APWA Golf Scramble. Three teams participated in a skins game, which included the longest drive and closest to the hole contest. The turnout was light, but everyone still had a great time The reception, hosted by the City of Jeffersontown, was held in the pool area of the Ramada Plaza Hotel. Guests enjoyed live music and hors d oeuvres. The conference kicked off the next day, October 17th, with APWA Past President Diane Linderman as the keynote speaker. She discussed the strategic initiatives of APWA. There were nine breakout sessions throughout the day; three in the morning and six in the afternoon. The topics discussed ranged from ADA requirements to urban trees to road diets. Nearly 100 people attended the Awards Luncheon which recognizing the merits of various types of public work projects throughout our region. President s Message: It s hard to believe that the year is already coming to a close. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to serve as your 2012 Kentucky Chapter APWA President. I was honored to host the conference in Louisville this year. We couldn t have asked for better weather for the roadeo and golf scramble. I appreciate all of those who worked behind the scenes. We couldn t have done it without you. I have enjoyed my time as your president and the opportunities I have had to meet other public works employees throughout the nation. Keep doing the great work that you do and know that your efforts effect your family, neighborhood and community for the better. Kentucky Chapter APWA Delegates Report We reached 28,610 members by the end of October. This is an increase from last year. Members have use of free Click, Listen and Learn programs. New Chapter and branch officers need to be reported by December 1, 2012. Chapter budgets for 2013 must be submitted by January 15, 2013. Chapter Leadership Training workshops will be held February 26 through March 2, 2013 in Kansas City. Each branch and chapter should plan on sending at least one person. More information will be coming. The Winter Maintenance Supervisor Certificate program has been a success with over 215 certificates being awarded after the first three workshops. BRANCH NEWS Bluegrass Branch The Bluegrass Brand held their Roadeo on September 12 in Frankfort. The winners include: Snow Plow: 1st Place: Darrell Hearn & Johnny Jennings with the city of Frankfort 2nd Place: Don Warner and Roger Kelley with LFUCG - Water Quality 3rd Place: Cody Callis and Jason Colston with Franklin County Backhoe: 1st Place: Daniel Doss with the city of Frankfort 2nd Place: Stephen Hockensmith with Franklin County Bluegrass Branch Roadeo Snow Plow winners, 3rd Place: Aaron Johnson with LFUCG - Water Quality Darrell Hearn and Johnny Jennings with the city of Frankfort. A big thank you to all the participants! Central Branch During the October Board meeting, plans for the State Conference were finalized. The meeting was also a planning session for the FHWA seminar Designing for Wheelchair Accessibility which is to be held one week after the State Conference. It will be held at the Metro Safe Building in Louisville. It will be open to staff members involved in construction as well as engineers. The November Board meeting will be held on November 15th. During this meeting the ballot of officers for 2013 will be announced. Also, plans for the December Quarterly meeting will be confirmed see you there! Northern Branch The Northern Branch met on November 8 and the guest speaker was Mike Bezold from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. He talked about current and proposed highway projects in the Northern Kentucky Region. There were 46 in attendance and were treated with a chili 3-way and cheese Coney from Gold Star Chili. Our next meeting will be December 13 at the Florence City Building. It is our annual Christmas party and we will be electing our officers for 2013. The Southern Branch would like to welcome Sean O Bryan as Chairman, Kyle Hunt as Vice-Chair/Chair Elect, Mike Hamilton as Secretary/Treasurer, Darrell Harrell as Executive Committee Member (2013-14), J. R. Stanley as Executive Committee Member (2013-14), Sheila Puckett as Executive Committee Member (2013-15) and Doug Boom as Executive Committee Member (2013-15). And, thank you to all who joined the meeting. The South Brand Roadeo took place on September 20, 2012 in Hopkinsville.
