Welcome! MDGFOA Membership Year 2014-15 Membership year begins July 1, 2014 Memberships will be available online beginning Thursday, June 19 Visit the MDGFOA booth in the exhibit hall to acquire your membership today! Welcome to the Maryland Government Finance Officers Summer Conference. This is our premier event, but just one in our annual lineup of Conferences and Affinity Group meetings. The value to our members is demonstrated by number of people who attend these events. MDGFOA Conferences are your best source of affordable CPE credits. Conferences and Affinity Group meetings are important resources for useful information, and opportunities to meet and talk with people who are trying to work through the same problems that you are. All of this doesn t just happen by itself. MDGFOA is run by volunteer Officers and a volunteer Board of Directors. Nobody has the extra time, but somebody needs to devote the time anyway. Make the commitment that others have made, and are making for you. Affinity Groups need people to arrange meetings and programs. Standing Committees need chairs and volunteers. The heart of MDGFOA is the Program Committee; the quality of our Conferences is a direct result of their efforts. If our programs are important to you, then get involved. Keep it going! We will need you. Let us know that you are interested. Thank you to all the people who have devoted their time for the benefit of all of us. Welcome again I hope you enjoy yourselves, learn a lot, and get to talk with your colleagues. And, don t forget to talk with our corporate Partners. Their support is a big part of MDGFOA s success. Ted Zaleski MDGFOA President 2014-15
Lloyd Jones Scholarship Winner Natalie Selah, Town of Berlin Natalie is a new MDGFOA member who enjoys learning and takes pride in doing a great job for the Town of Berlin. Natalie received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland in 2007. Originally hired as a Senior Accountant for the Town in April 2010, Natalie quickly demonstrated her accounting skills and her strong work ethic. The combination of these two characteristics resulted in her promotion to Acting Finance Director in April 2013 and Finance Director four months later. Since joining the Town, Natalie has made a significant contribution to the betterment of our Finance Department. Natalie s attention to detail and commitment to doing a good job has resulted in a very smooth audit process this year, with no identified deficiencies. She is also persistent and precise in ensuring the reconciliation of all bank statements, utility billing, and collections of miscellaneous receivables. UPCOMING CONFERENCES Fall: October 24, 2014 Winter: January 30, 2015 Spring: April 24, 2015 Summer: June 17-19, 2015 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE WELCOME to Ocean City and the Maryland GFOA Annual Conference. I hope that you are ready to learn, network with other attendees and have a great time at the beach. This has been a good year for MDGFOA. We have accomplished many things. We held three one-day conferences and have settled in to the BWI Marriott as our main site for a two-year period. We started the year with the Fall conference in beautiful Harbor East of Baltimore City. The day was sparkling on the water. We continued with our Winter meeting in January and managed to miss the snow. In April we changed it up with a Thursday meeting. We even added bigger screens at conferences for better viewing of presentations. During the year we held two Intermediate Government Accounting courses with wonderful volunteer expert teachers. We had an informative Debt Affinity Group meeting, and our Tax Affinity Group went strong from October through April. The membership voted to change our By-Laws at the Winter meeting which allows us to realign and expand the Board of Directors. You will be voting on the expanded Board at the Annual meeting on Thursday afternoon. Once again, our membership and our organization were assisted by Jane Ramsey of Annapolis Management Partners. Please thank her for all the hard work she does to assist members and make our events the best professional events you attend. I would also like to thank my Board members and especially the Officers. President-Elect Zaleski and Past-President Barney had to pinch-hit for me during the year. Committee Chairman deserve a big thanks especially By-laws Chair, Dawn Parks, Education Chair, Michael Broache, and out-going Sponsorship Chair, Ed Bianchi. In addition a special thanks to the affinity group chairs, Linda Watts, Steve Kraus, and Rachel Holmes. Our many sponsors make the high quality of our events possible. A special thanks to all of those business partners that help us with money, speakers, and information about their services and products. Have a great time at the conference, learn something new, make a new friend and improve your leadership skills. We need YOU providing EXCELLENCE in government finance. Enjoy and thank you for letting me lead you this year. Kathryn Hewitt MDGFOA President 2013-14 All Quarterly Conferences will be held at the BWI Marriott
