Thanks to the generosity of the Family of F. Thomas Mueller, The New Jersey Police Chiefs Foundation is proud to announce the creation of The F. Thomas Mueller Scholarship Program. This scholarship program has been established to honor F. Thomas Mueller, former member of the Essex County Sheriff s Department. The Foundation will offer scholarships to any child, or direct descendant, of any law enforcement officer (Local, State or Federal) who lost their life in the line of duty. This scholarship is open to any graduating High School student at an accredited college, university or vocational program within the upcoming school year. It is also open to anyone currently enrolled in a college program. Applicants will be judged on scholastic achievement and extracurricular activities that include community service. The New Jersey Police Chiefs Foundation is honored to assist the families of those law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Eligibility Requirements: This scholarship is open to any graduating High School student at an accredited college, university or vocational program within the upcoming school year. It is also open to anyone currently enrolled in a college program. The applicant must be a child, or direct descendant, of any law enforcement officer (local, State or federal) who lost their life in the line of duty. Scholarship Amounts: A Maximum of $2,500.00 Junior/Community College/Vocational Program A Maximum of $5,000.00 Four Year College/University Number of Scholarships to be awarded each Calendar Year: Based on the number of applications and the amount of money approved by a Scholarship Committee assigned by the Board of Trustees of the New Jersey Police Chiefs Foundation. Recipients: Recipients will be recommended by the New Jersey Police Chiefs Foundation Honorary Scholarship Committee and approved by the Board of Trustees. Scholarships are awarded throughout the year. When awards are made, recipients will be notified that funds will be released upon proof of acceptance in a certified college. Winners of the scholarship award will be asked to provide payment instructions, to include the address of the Finance Office of the University/College. Award money will be mailed to the recipient s university/college in the form of a check payable to the school he or she will be attending.
Applicants will be judged on scholastic achievement and extracurricular activities that include community service. All applicants remain anonymous during the application process. All personal information, including name, address and social security number will be removed from the application prior to judging. Entering Student (Recent High School Graduate) Must be a child (natural or legally adopted) of a New Jersey law enforcement officer (local, State or federal). Must be a high school student who will complete his or her high school education during the current school year. Must have a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher. Must present two letters of recommendation from staff members of graduate s high school. Submit a short essay (500 words or less) on need for scholarship and goals. Must enroll in at least twelve credits. Continuing Student (Already Enrolled in College Program) Must be a child (natural or legally adopted) of a New Jersey law enforcement officer (local, State or federal). Must have a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher. Submit a short essay (500 words or less) on need for scholarship and goals. Must enroll in at least twelve credits. Limitations The New Jersey Police Chiefs Foundation F. Thomas Mueller Scholarship may be used at any accredited four year college or university, or any accredited vocational school, community college or junior college. It will be used to defray the cost of tuition and university/college sponsored room and board. It may not be used to defray the cost of books, fees, computer costs or other accessory expenses.
The applicant will not be eligible to receive this award if at any time he or she accepts an appointment to any military service academy, or accepts any other full four year scholarship. (Note: Full scholarship is defined as covering tuition and room and board. If a student receives a full tuition award but is still responsible for room and board, then he or she is eligible for the New Jersey Police Chiefs Foundation F. Thomas Mueller Scholarship.
