Entomology and Plant Pathology 4-H Forensics Program: CSI in a wheat field For the past two summers Oklahoma 4-H has partnered with NIMMFAB (National Institute for Microbial Forensics & Food and Agricultural Bio-security, http://entoplp.okstate.edu/nimffab/) to teach a small select group of youth and adults about forensics, DNA, fingerprints, bio-terrorism, and forensic science. Six county 4-H programs will be selected to participate in this program. County teams will consist of one educator, four teenage youth, and one science teacher. The goal is for each county team to take the lessons and materials back to their home county and teach other youth about forensic science. Registration is due April 1 st 2013 When: Where: Who: Cost: June 25 th -27 th Oklahoma State University Henry Bellman Research Center, Stillwater, OK Six county teams of one educator, four teenage youth and one science teacher Program is a USDA funded project, no cost to participants, county teams will be selected based upon past participation in STEM projects and a first come first serve basis
The stem institute: Community Action Teams The 4-H STEM Institute is about applying new information, technology, research based applications to Service Learning and Community Service. The objectives are to form a Youth- Adult Team that will select a Community Need or Issue, attend the STEM Institute in one specific track and then return home to apply the new knowledge through setting up a demonstration, creating awareness through media, starting clubs, or teaching workshops. In keeping with the Service Learning model each activity should be followed up by Showcasing the teams outcomes and Celebrating the final results. This year we are offering tracks in Digital Media, Robotics, GPS/GIS, and igreen (environmental & energy conservation), Animal Biotechnology and Entomology. Teams will only attend one track. For the summer of 2013 we are planning 2 STEM Institutes in order to accommodate more teams and avoiding scheduling conflicts. Tracks will be cancelled based upon participation. Participants should be a core leadership group that is willing to follow through with their selected projects and an adult who is willing to work with the teens to help facilitate the process. Dates: June 20-21, 2013 July 11-12, 2013
Registration Due: May 1, 2013 Cost will be $30 for the Institute and teams are free to stay on or off campus which ever works best for each group. Staying in the OSU Suites will be an additional $35 per person. Registration includes 4 meals, breaks and a pool party. No refunds please.
