College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Ohio State University Extension - Fairfield County 831 College Avenue, Suite D Lancaster OH 43130-1081 740-652-7260 Phone 740-687-7010 Fax fairfield.osu.edu A Word from Your 4-H Educator What a wonderful month of 4-H camps we had in June we could not have asked for better weather! I cannot believe how great the counselors and adult staff were to work with in preparation and conducting all three of our successful camps. Sue and I certainly could not do this without them. Thank you! Summer judging proved to be another exciting event for this summer as I watched youth of all ages bring project displays or garments in for judging. What an outstanding job they have all done to make it to judging week. Thank you to volunteers and parents who help make that happen! Many youth went on to the Ohio State Fair and had great experiences and top honors for their projects. Summerfest will bring this full circle as we recognize the accomplishments of our outstanding youth who participated in summer judging and the Ohio State Fair last month. I am looking forward to committees meeting again in preparation for events this fall including the Fairfield County Fair. I hope everyone has had a great summer and good luck to all families as school starts back up again. Please make sure you read this August newsletter completely as it is full of information for the upcoming fair. Please share information with your 4-H families as needed. Finally, I d like to share that our 4-H Program Assistant, Sue Suttles, retired July 31 st after 26 years with OSU Extension and Fairfield County 4-H. As you all know, Sue has been extremely helpful during her time in this position and she will be greatly missed here at the office! We wish her all the best as she enjoys retirement and serving as an advisor for her club! In lieu of gifts, you are welcome to send Sue a card to the Extension Office and I ll be sure to get these to her. We are utilizing the 4-H Blog more and more please visit http://u.osu.edu/fairfield4h/ to see what we ve added in the last few days. Lots of updates are added on a daily basis early this month alone we added multiple species ambassador/representative applications as well as the Junior Fair Queen application. We strongly encourage you (and your members and parents) to subscribe to this blog if they have not done so already. If you are not sure how to do that, just email cooksey.25@osu.edu and I will be happy to add you to the list. Blog posts are compiled for the week and emailed to subscribers weekly on Saturday. 2017 Junior Fair Rule Book is now available online at https://go.osu.edu/2017fcjrfairrules. Books have been distributed by club advisors with members names on them. If you need additional copies, please see the Senior Fair Office or print from the link, as we have no extras here at our office. Important Dates to Remember see single page insert with August/September/October dates! Summer Judging and Summerfest: Summer judging results are available on the website at http://go.osu.edu/17summerjudgingresults State fair participants were selected at summer judging and were very successful at the 2017 Ohio State Fair and were awarded many Outstanding of the Day and Clock Trophies. Those members who placed at the county level are invited to attend Summerfest to receive their awards. Invitations were mailed out to those members receiving awards. Summerfest begins at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 26 th at the Liberty Center. State Fair Notes: Fairfield County was once again well represented at the Ohio State Fair with still and livestock projects. We had 124 members taking 147 still projects to the Ohio State Fair, as well as an additional 50+ members attending with livestock, dogs and horses. Ohio State Fair results can be found online at https://ohio4h.org/families/ohio-state-fair/2017-results for still projects and at https://ohiostatefair.com/competition-results/ for livestock results. DUNF Forms: The Drug Use Notification Forms (DUNF) are now available at the Senior Fair Office and the OSU Extension Office. Please send a representative from your club to pick the forms up. Forms will be due at weigh-in for each species. As a reminder, our county code is 94. NEW for 2017, per page 7 of the Junior Fair Book, Rule 26

states: Market animals and any species that requires a DUNF must be free from any/all drugs in their system on fair weigh-in day. Exhibitor s Notice: All livestock exhibitors must abide by the rules listed in the 2017 Junior Fair Book. Please note that animals must be drug free or within tolerance by weigh-in day of fair. Each member is to bring a completed Drug Use Notification Form (DUNF) to weigh-in at the fair. Livestock exhibitors must have completed a Quality Assurance Training by June 30, 2017 and should indicate so on the DUNF form in order to exhibit at the 2017 Fairfield County Junior Fair. If the forms are not correctly completed, exhibitors will not be permitted to show. Cakes, Pies and Candy Reminder: Cakes, pies and candies will only be accepted in the 4-H Display Barn on Saturday, October 7 th from 1:00 7:00 p.m. or Monday, October 9 th from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. NO ITEMS ARE ACCEPTED ON SUNDAY! Judging will be held Monday October 10 th in the 4-H Display barn with registration starting at 2:30 pm and judging beginning at 3 pm. Results will be announced once all judging has been completed, approximately 7:15 pm. Please check your member handbook page 27 and the Jr Fair Rule book for additional information. Project Record Book Completion: Exhibitor project record books will be judged as part of the Premier Exhibitor Contest. There will also be a tie-breaker question that youth need to answer when they drop off their book and each specie s weigh-in. Project books must be turned in at fair weigh-in/check-in and will be judged during fair week. Awards will be presented for each specie s competition. Premier Exhibitor Testing: The TWO final Premier Exhibitor Testing opportunities will be offered on Sunday, August 27 th from 1:00 3:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 9 th from 9:00 11:00 a.m. The testing location will be at the Rickett s Hall at the Fairgrounds. The test for each species can be taken 1 time, has no more than 50 questions, and includes true/false and multiple choice questions (have definite answers). This test is required if an exhibitor wants to be eligible for the Premier Exhibitor Award in that respective specie. Endowment Challenges: Don t forget the Dimes for Endowment (collection of dimes) and the Endowment Challenge ($20.17). All money is due Friday, September 8 th. If possible, please convert your dimes to a check and send this and Endowment Challenge donations directly to the Endowment Committee Post Office Box (PO Box 564, Lancaster, OH 43130). If you happen to drop this off at the Extension Office, please roll any change before bringing it into the office. Thank You Notes: We need to make sure our sponsors receive thanks and appreciation for supporting Fairfield County s youth! This would include youth applying for the Bertha Wilson Scholarship, receiving awards at Summerfest, as well as Junior Fair Exhibitors. Please make sure your Junior Fair Exhibitors who received awards this summer and at the fair write thank you notes to the sponsors of their awards. Several people took lots of time making sure an address label of the particular sponsor was placed on the back of each award or attached a thank you note card to a trophy. I am also aware of sponsors who have stopped donating for fair awards because they did not receive one thank you note. If a member is not sure of their sponsor for an award received at the fair, check out the Awards Portion of the Junior Fair Book as it gives the name of the sponsor. If you aren t able to find an address, contact the OSU Extension Office and we can help you find it! Also encourage youth to include information about their project, award received, etc. as the sponsors enjoy reading this information! Sponsors also love pictures! Only the head advisor should complete this form. The outside wall booth sizes will be the same as before. Display Barn Setup is 1:00-7:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday, October 6 th and 7 th (NO SUNDAY SETUP!). Display Barn Tear Down is Sunday, October 15 th, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. No booths or projects may be removed prior to this time! Exhibit Guards: To help cut down on vandalism or theft in the barns, we ask that all clubs with booths in the 4-H Display Barn sign up for a 3 hour period to guard the areas. We need two people per club one adult and one person age 16 or older. They can be parents, advisors, or older 4-H members. The guards watch the area and answer visitors questions. Fill out the enclosed sign-up form with your name for all the times you are able to help. Buyers Lists - Advisors may pick up the club s Buyer List of addresses at the Extension Office starting Tuesday October 17 th. Keep this list, as you will need it to receive checks for club members in December! Use it as check-off list for members turning in thank you notes which should be due to the advisor by November 1 st. It is the responsibility of advisor to collect all Thank You notes and mail them out as soon as you mark them off your checklist. Do not wait to mail the thank you notes until you have them all as this delays the timing in sending a thank you note promptly. Advisors will then return a checked off buyers list (for receiving and mailing respective thank you notes) in exchange for member checks at the December check days. Check Days: December 2 nd from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Ag Center (Extension Office) and December 9 th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Senior Fair Office (located on the Fairgrounds). Any check(s) not picked up at these two dates goes back to the sale committee.
