NORTH CAROLINA COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM H. Martin Lancaster, President MEMORANDUM: January 31, 2008 TO: FROM: SUBJECT: Compensatory Education Program Coordinators Basic Skills Directors Sillar G. Smith, NCCCS Compensatory Education Coordinator 2008 Compensatory Education Program Regional Instructors Training The Compensatory Education Program Regional Instructors Training will be held on March 13 14, at Lenoir Community College; April 10 11, at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College/Enka Campus; and May 8 9, at Guilford Technical Community College/Greensboro Campus. First Day of Training: The first day of this year s Compensatory Education Program Regional Instructors Training will focus on the administration of a new CASAS standardized assessment for adults with developmental disabilities. The assessment is called Providing Options for the Workplace, Education, and Rehabilitation (POWER) Tests. This is the first time training on POWER Tests has been provided for Compensatory Education Program (CED) staff. POWER tests are approved by US Department of Education s National Reporting System (NRS). The tests results should be placed under Reading on the NRS Table, and on the LEIS Form, under test check CASAS Life Skills and under the component check Reading/Comprehension. The POWER tests are standardized performance-based assessments. They are available for three skill levels (AA to AAAA). With the POWER tests students are observed oneon-one while they demonstrate basic skill tasks and are rated on a five point scale related to levels of independence. Training on the administration of the POWER tests will be a full day session provided by Anita White and Shelley Bleyl. Space for this training is limited to 75 participants. This training is required. Each Compensatory Education Program must send one instructor to the POWER training. Once the 58 required seats are filled, the remaining 17 seats will be filled by a second person from a college on a first come basis. There can only be a total of two participants from a college: one required participant and one participant selected on a first come basis until all seats are filled. Second Day of Training: The second day of this year s Compensatory Education Program Regional Instructors Training is a three-hour interactive session entitled Exploring Stories with Adults. This interactive training gives professionals a curriculum and an approach to use to teach literacy, problem solving and life applications to students who have developmental disabilities. The stories are used to teach important skills and concepts and help students see how the themes and characters relate to their own lives. Teachers can incorporate their own ideas and resources into the lesson, as well as knowledge of their students interests and goals. Motheread Inc. will provide this training. The regional training is provided at no cost; however, you must complete the enclosed registration form and indicate by names the participants who will be attending from your program. Please note that we are no longer allowed to provide refreshments during breaks when there is no registration fee. Although sometime the college hosting the training will provide light refreshments, you should come prepared to purchase your own if necessary. Enclosed you will find an agenda, information regarding lodging, and college websites for directions. You can find the links to the colleges hosting the training at the North Carolina Community College System website http://www.ncccs.edu/.
