Message from the Chief Minister, Johor On behalf of the State Government of Johor, I wish to congratulate KPJ Healthcare Berhad for 30 years of continuous growth and excellence. As the healthcare wing of Johor Corporation (JCorp), KPJ Healthcare has contributed to the growth and development of the State s economy. Although the reputation of KPJ has gone far beyond the confines of the State and indeed the country, I am proud that its roots and heritage are distinctly Johorean. Over the years, KPJ has continued to grow from strength to strength and maintained its position at the forefront of the healthcare industry in Malaysia. As it is now the last decade before the realisation of Vision 2020, it is only fitting that an organisation like KPJ Healthcare Berhad records its progress as an inspiration for others. In addition to being a celebration of the past, the book is also a statement of KPJ s intent to leap into the future with the same drive that it has had for the past 30 years. As the healthcare wing of Johor Corporation (JCorp), KPJ Healthcare has contributed to the growth and development of the State s economy. Message from the Chairman It is with great pride and privilege that I pen this message to commemorate the 30th anniversary of KPJ Healthcare Berhad. In my time as both a member of JCorp s management and a Board member of KPJ, I have been a witness to the zeal of KPJ s management and staff towards advancing specialist healthcare in Malaysia. This coffee table book is a wonderful testimony to the hard work and dedication of KPJ Healthcare s team members throughout the 30 years of its history which has resulted in it becoming the leading specialist healthcare provider in the country. Particular thanks should go to Datin Paduka Siti Sa diah Sheikh Bakir the Managing Director whose drive and leadership qualities have taken KPJ to the top. As the Chairman of KPJ Healthcare Berhad, I shall also thank my predecessor Tan Sri Dato Muhammad Ali Hashim whose vision has guided KPJ for many years. He left a strong foundation for us to build upon for the future. I also wish to thank everyone who has been part of the success of KPJ Healthcare Berhad through the years the pioneers who founded the organisation, the directors, the management, the staff, the nurses, and of course the medical consultants. Message from the Managing Director 30 Johor Specialist Hospital. From that one hospital years ago, I had the privilege to be part of the management team at what has now become KPJ the first ever private hospital in Johor - KPJ Healthcare has grown to more than 20 in Malaysia and two in Indonesia. KPJ Healthcare also has a number of subsidiary companies and of course the KPJ International University College of Nursing and Health Sciences. All in all, it has been an exceptional journey over the last three decades, and this coffee table book is a celebration of that effort. The last five years have been especially momentous. KPJ Healthcare has added several more hospitals to its network in the period from 2006 to 2011, as well as improved and upgraded existing ones. The latest diagnostic technologies and a computerised information system to enhance effectiveness has also been implemented. KPJ Healthcare has commenced work on building new hospitals to meet the growing demand for quality healthcare not only from Malaysians but also from health travellers who come from afar to seek treatment at our hospitals. All these have helped cement KPJ Healthcare s position as the first RM1 billion healthcare group in Malaysia. This dedication to the philosophy of care has enabled KPJ to advance in its vision to become The Preferred Healthcare Provider and to Deliver Quality Healthcare Services. The real reason behind our success is people. And I would like to thank the Management of JCorp and KPJ s Board of Directors for their support through the years. I also wish to thank my colleagues on the management team, the staff, nurses and consultants at KPJ Healthcare, for their dedication to the philosophy of care which has enabled KPJ to advance in its vision to become The Preferred Healthcare Provider and to Deliver Quality Healthcare Services. Preface Published in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of KPJ Healthcare Berhad, this book pays tribute to the achievements, breakthroughs, and successes of KPJ Healthcare Berhad, its management, staff, and doctors. It is a testament to how the pursuit of excellence has enabled KPJ Healthcare to not only become the largest private healthcare provider in the country, but also one of the most innovative. This publication chronicles the three decade journey of KPJ Healthcare from just one hospital in 1981 to the present, where it has more than 20 hospitals spread out across the whole of Malaysia and even 2 in Indonesia. Emphasis has been placed on the five-year period from 2006 to 2010 a time frame which saw KPJ Healthcare, in the end of 2009, transform into the only healthcare concern to become one of the top 100 companies on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. However this is more than just a journal of past glories. It is an affirmation of the core essence and values of KPJ Healthcare its constant dedication to excellence in all areas, from financial performance to facilities, from human capital development to technology adoption and advancement from social responsibility to medical services. Last but not least, this book represents a promise that KPJ Healthcare will always build on its strong heritage and strive to always be better than before. Just as KPJ Healthcare has grown with Malaysia over the last 30 years, it will continue to do so for years to come.
