Texas Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve 3rd Quarter Newsletter VOLUME 6, ISSUE 3 2014 Message from the Chairman As I write these remarks I hope all of you are having a great summer and took some time to enjoy the 4 th of July weekend. Celebrating our independence and honoring the service and sacrifice of our veterans and those currently serving is a highlight of the summer and makes us all appreciate living in the United States. I especially want to thank those that serve in our Guard and Reserve, their families, and their employers. Their service for over four hundred years has successfully defended this nation and brought hope to millions of people around the world. I enjoyed seeing all of you that attended the 2014 Annual Planning and Awards Conference in Austin and we appreciate the feedback we received on your thoughts on what needs to be sustained or needs improvement. Our Executive Committee will be meeting in Austin on 10-11 July and one of the topics of discussion will be the feedback we received from you, our volunteers, on ways to improve the annual conference. In addition, the committee will begin planning for 2015. I would like to welcome Tre Denton to our Texas ESGR team. Tre was recently hired to be our new Houston Employment Coordinator (formerly known as Employment Transition Coordinator). Hilton Signs Corporate SoS Nick Briner, Hotel Manager of Hilton Anatole Dallas, part of the Hilton Worldwide chain, recently signed a Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve. The signing ceremony occurred at the Hilton Anatole Dallas followed by a hiring fair for all military, former military and military spouses at the hotel. Hilton Worldwide signed a corporate statement of support and pledged to hire 10,000 Guardsmen, Reservists, Veterans and Spouses within the next five years. Jacobs Signs SoS Jacobs Group Vice President Lowell Wiles signed a Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve during a ceremony at Jacobs Houston Office, where he was joined by Mr. Ronald Young, ESGR National Executive Director. C&J Energy Reaffirms Support Josh Comstock signs a Statement of Support for C&J Energy in Houston. Breakfast with the Boss Twenty-five employers and human resource professionals gathered at Sweet Sue s Restaurant in Tyler, Texas to participate in a Breakfast with the Boss sponsored by the Texas Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. Those in attendance gained a better understanding of the training and mobilization missions of our National Guard and Reserve Forces. The program started with some brief remarks and a breakfast. After the meal, Major General James K. Brown, Commander of the 36th Infantry Division in Austin, spoke to the audience about the mission of the Texas National Guard and the importance of having the support of employers. (Continuation of Chairman s Message from page 1) I know all of you will welcome Tre to Houston and wish him the best in his new position. I want you to know how much I appreciate all your efforts that are focused on our core missions of employer outreach, military outreach, EIP, and ombudsman support. We need continued emphasis on reaffirming employer support by increasing the numbers of new Statements of Support and conducting focused outreach efforts to brief all known Reserve Component units and their members on USERRA, our awards program, and EIP initiatives. I would encourage all of you to increase your efforts to conduct military outreach in your area. We are very excited to announce that British Petroleum (BP) will be signing a Statement of Support on July 15 th at their US corporate headquarters in Houston. We appreciate BP s support of our Guard and Reserve. We are still waiting to hear if AT&T will be selected to be a 2014 Freedom Award winner, keep your fingers crossed, we should receive some news in a few weeks. I continue to be impressed by your personal dedication and extraordinary efforts - you are the lifeblood and essence of Texas ESGR. You are the premier employer support team for Texas and you need to feel proud for the difference you make in improving the lives of our Reserve Component warriors, their families, and employers. Supervisor Awarded Patriot Award League City Supervisors Honored Victoria Pham with Baylor Surgicare at Bedford and Chad Jackman hold the Patriot Award presented to Ms. Pham by William Nappier (Texas ESGR Area 9 volunteer). Ms. Pham was nominated by ARNG service member Chad Jackman. Above and Beyond Awards were presented to the League City Fire Department and Police Department along with Patriot Awards. Lyondellbasell Aman Morani of Chase Bank in Dallas is presented with a Patriot Award by Phung Tran, Texas ESGR Area 10 member. Kevin Hust a Army Reserves member nominated Mr. Morani for being supportive of his military obligations. Chase Bank was given an Above and Beyond Award for going above and beyond the legal requirements of USERRA. 807th Yellow RIbbon Pete Greco (Plant Fire Chief) and Calvin Daniels (Operations Manager) with Lyondellbasell, Houston Refining, LP recently signed two Statement of Supports. A Patriot Award was presented to Eric Fernandez (Assistant Site Supervisor) by Pat Shirling (Texas ESGR Area 26 volunteer). USMCR Given ESGR Briefing Marines with the Motor Transport Company in Lubbock receive ESGR, USERRA, & H2H briefings. 1st Sgt Peter Mireles emphasizes the importance of knowing how to contact ESGR for assistance.
