THE CAMARGO FOUNDATION CORE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM 2016/2017 THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS DECEMBER 8, 2015 MAIN INFORMATION ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP Applicant eligibility: The Camargo Foundation welcomes applications from individuals from all countries, nationalities, and career levels, working in the following fields: Scholars and thinkers in arts and humanities should be working in French and Francophone cultures, including cross- cultural studies that engage the cultures and influences of the Mediterranean region. Artists, in all disciplines, who are the primary creators of new work The Camargo Foundation decided in 2014 to open its call to leading thinkers in the arts and humanities, in order to enable experienced, trusted, and innovative leaders to work on meaningful advancements in their fields. These leaders include but are not limited to artistic and executive directors of cultural organizations, executive leaders of humanities organizations, curators, cultural critics, and academic and artistic deans. Graduate students whose academic residency and general requirements have been met and who are completing the dissertation required for their degree are eligible to apply. Project/Area of inquiry: applicants may apply either with a specific project or a specific area of inquiry on which they would like to work during the residency. An area of inquiry should be specific and represent exploration and investigation in the fellow s field. No concrete outcome is expected.

Length: The Camargo Foundation s primary program consists of fellowship residencies of six to eleven weeks. The dates for 2016/2017 are: Fall 2016: 8 weeks from September 13 to November 8, 2016 Spring 2017: 6, 8 or 11 weeks starting on February 28, 2017. Applicants can choose between 6 weeks from February 21 to April 4, 2017 or 8 weeks from February 21 to April 18, 2017 or 11 weeks from February 21 to May 9, 2017 Facilities: The Camargo Foundation s campus includes twelve furnished apartments, a reference library, a music/conference room, an open- air theater, an artist s studio with darkroom, and a composer s studio. The Camargo Foundation does not have a dance studio. Stipend: A stipend of 800US$ per month is available, as is funding for basic transportation to and from Cassis for the Fellow for the residency. In the case of air travel, basic coach class booked far in advance is covered. Regional Contacts: During the residency, the Camargo Foundation will provide formal and informal links with the region; meetings with professionals whose areas of expertise are relevant for the fellows if desired; opportunities to attend events; and the option of inviting outside professionals to project discussions. On a voluntary basis, Fellows may have the opportunity to discuss their work with community, cultural, and educational organizations from the region. Such discussions may be conceived and organized by the Foundation in close consultation with the Fellow. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE FELLOWSHIP Applicant eligibility Collaborative projects: Fellowships are usually given to one person. Collaborative projects of up to three persons are also welcome, but only one stipend and one multi- bedroomed apartment will be awarded per team. Former Fellows: First- time applicants are normally given preference over previous Camargo fellows. Applications by former fellows are not considered earlier than three years after the their previous residency. Project and area of inquiry Residency requirements: The time in Cassis must be spent on the project or area of inquiry proposed to and accepted by the selection committees, and ratified by the Board of Trustees. Fellows must physically be in residence at the Camargo Foundation. This stipulation does not preclude absences during weekends. Frequent or prolonged absences are not acceptable. Access to research resources: Research should be at a stage that does not require resources unavailable in the Marseille- Cassis- Aix region or online. Applicants planning on conducting research in local archives may need to rent a car during their Fellowship at their own expense. Cross- disciplinary exchange: Discussions are held regularly so that each Fellow has an opportunity to present the project or area of inquiry on which s/he is working to the group. The discussion serves as a progress report and an opportunity for cross- disciplinary exchange. All Fellows are required to be present at these discussions.

Translation project: Translation projects are welcome. Translations should be presented in the category of scholars and thinkers. However, writers intending to translate their own works should apply in the category of creative writing. Language requirements: Work developed during the residency may be in any language. In the interests of Camargo s interdisciplinary, multicultural community, candidates must be able to communicate well in English. A basic knowledge of French is useful, but not required. Evaluation Evaluation: An evaluation is conducted at the end of the residency period. Each Fellow is asked to file an evaluation form about the program and the residency. A short written report on progress made on the project or area of inquiry will be required from each Fellow at the end of the residency. The Foundation may ask Fellows two to three years after their fellowship residencies for an update on the progress on the project or area of inquiry pursued while at Camargo Foundation. Completed works: A copy of any publication (digital or paper) resulting from work done during the residency should be sent to the Camargo Foundation. Paper documents will be added to the library collection, digital items will be added online. Any publication, exhibit, or performance resulting from the grant should give credit to the Camargo Foundation. Additional funding and administrative procedures Additional Funding: Fellows may not accept gainful employment that coincides with their stay at Camargo. Fees for occasional lectures or participation in seminars are allowed. Additional grants with requirements that do not contradict the conditions of the Camargo Fellowship are encouraged. Visas: For non- European Union citizens, a visa may be required depending on nationality and length of stay. The processing of this visa may take a considerable amount of time. Applicants who have been accepted for a residency and who are not members of the European Union should contact the French Embassy or Consulate in their area as soon as possible for information regarding visa requirements for residence in France. The Camargo Foundation will provide an invitation letter if needed. Accompanying family members Spouses/adult partners and dependent minor children may accompany fellows for short stays or for the duration of the residency. Due to the physical arrangements at the Camargo Foundation, accompanying children must be at least six years old upon arrival and enrolled in and attending school or organized activities outside the Camargo Foundation campus, during the week. THE SELECTION PROCESS The Camargo Foundation has two first- round selection committees, one that reviews applications from scholars/thinkers and one that reviews applications from artists. Committee members, some of whom are former Fellows, are distinguished international scholars, writers, editors, artists, and curators. The Program Director assists in their deliberations as a non- voting member. Two groups of finalists are determined. A cross- disciplinary committee of academic and artistic members makes the final selections from among those finalists. Selection of fellows is based on the quality of the projects and specific areas of inquiry proposed, the quality and significance of the professional accomplishments of the applicants, how relevant a fellowship at Camargo would be to the project or area of inquiry, and the importance of receiving a residency at this stage of the applicants careers. Candidacy is open to qualified persons of all nationalities and on a non- discriminatory basis. This final committee considers issues of balance and diversity when choosing the final group of Fellows. Committee choices are subject to ratification by the Board of Trustees. Candidates will be contacted in late April 2016 to let them know the outcome of their application. The Camargo Foundation regrets that individual feedback on applications is not possible.
