Nanaimo Foundation Annual Report 2015/2016 Making meaningful and lasting impacts in our community 205 75 Front Street Nanaimo, BC V9R 5H9 250.667.4292 www.nanaimofoundation.com

Building Community Legacies As a third generation Nanaimoite, I feel it is important to give back to the community that has given me so much. It is an exciting time to be a supporter of the Nanaimo Foundation and to be a part of the difference being made in our community. Tom Harris Director, Nanaimo Foundation Founder, Harris Family Fund 2015/2016 Nanaimo Foundation Board of Directors The Nanaimo Foundation is the community foundation serving the regions of Ladysmith, Cedar, Gabriola Island, Nanaimo and Lantzville. We work with donors to create legacies. The Nanaimo Foundation multiplies the impact of donor dollars by placing gifts in income-earning endowment funds. The earnings from these gifts are used to make strategic grants addressing community needs. Operating out of donated office space on Front Street, courtesy of Jonathan Lampman and Bob Moss, the Nanaimo Foundation had a lot to celebrate this year! The 2015/2016 year began with welcoming our first staff person, Laurie Bienert, in our 33 year history. Over this year, we launched two dedicated community funds and established three new committees. We provided support to Syrian refugees as they began to make Nanaimo their home and distributed more than 23 grants across the communities we serve. We envisioned and brought to fruition a movement of giving for Central Vancouver Island Mid Island Gives, involving 35 local organizations. Since our establishment in 1982, the Nanaimo Foundation together with our generous donors have provided more than 300 grants, totalling more than $2.5 million to important needs in Central Vancouver Island. We are grateful to several new donors who this year established the eight new endowment funds at the Nanaimo Foundation which will grow in perpetuity as a source of valuable community capital. The Nanaimo Foundation is part of Canada s community foundation movement, represented by 191 community foundations from coast to coast. A Legacy Story - The Stanley de Vos Fund Three years ago, longtime Nanaimo residents David Stanley and Marie de Vos established a fund at the Nanaimo Foundation. They established this fund with the Nanaimo Foundation because they wanted to donate securities and the Nanaimo Foundation has the capacity to facilitate this type of gift (which provides excellent tax advantages). Stanley and de Vos chose to create a Donor Advised Fund, which gives the donors flexibility to choose different fund recipients for each annual granting cycle. In the spring of 2016, David and Marie distributed the first grant from their fund to the Nanaimo 7-10 Club. Year after year, they are able to choose which organizations they wish to support--including smaller organizations that may not have the capacity to accept gifts of securities. Each year, David and Marie continue to make contributions to their endowment fund. They are proud of the fund s growing impact and appreciate the Foundation s expertise in managing the fund. The Stanley de Vos Fund is now the largest Donor Advised Fund at the Nanaimo Foundation. 2 www.nanaimofoundation.com

Foundation Milestones 2014 Launch of Nanaimo s First Vital Signs Report Vital Signs is a community checkup that evaluates our city as a place to live, learn, work, and grow. 2015 Establishing Gabriola Island & Ladysmith Community Funds Building dedicated endowment funds for and directed by the communities of Gabriola Island and Ladysmith. 2016 Nanaimo Non-Profits Receive $70,000 Our largest one-time disbursement from the Vital Nanaimo Fund benefitting 11 local organizations. Our Mission To steward the gifts of energy, ideas, time, and money to make meaningful and lasting impacts in our community. Our Vision A healthy, vibrant, livable, and sustainable community: this is our vision for Nanaimo. In our vision, our community is able to include and offer opportunities to everyone. It has the knowledge and ability needed to help shape its own future. A Significant Contribution for Dementia Care As a long-time supporter of the Nanaimo Travellers Lodge (NTL) Society, the Nanaimo Foundation presented NTL with a donation of $150K in September 2016 for their new dementia care home on Northfield Road. With this latest contribution, the Nanaimo Foundation s support to NTL totals more than $500,000. This makes the Nanaimo Foundation the largest contributor to the construction of Eden Gardens. Eden Gardens, opening in spring 2017, will replace NTL s aging facility. Improvements will include an additional 40 Complex Dementia Care beds, a much larger and modern facility for its current 90 residents (known as Elders), and vital day programs that help to keep people with dementia living in their homes for as long as possible. Our Committees Nanaimo Foundation Community Engagement Committee The newly-established Nanaimo Foundation Community Engagement Committee is a group of volunteers who work together to advance the Nanaimo Foundation s mission and its unique role in the community. The founding members of the Committee strive to increase the Nanaimo Foundation s opportunities to address local needs and enhance Nanaimo s health and vibrancy. Our Community Funds Committee Members Jenn Bogwald Colin Duncanson Dave Hammond Mike Herold Dan Kucherka Pat Sullivan David Witty Trina Brubaker Lucie Gosselin Tom Harris Doug Johnston Mark MacDonald Chelsea Wilson As we approach our country s 150th birthday, the Governor General of Canada set the important goal of every Canadian community having access to a community foundation by 2017. The Nanaimo Foundation has served the communities of Gabriola Island and Ladysmith for more than 30 years. We provided our first grant to Gabriola Island in 1985, and our first grant in Ladysmith in 1987. The notion of both the Gabriola Island Community Fund and the Ladysmith Community Fund came from residents of these two communities. Understanding the important role community foundations play in supporting strong communities, Gerry Stefanson of Gabriola Island and Bruce Whittington of Ladysmith approached the Nanaimo Foundation and together we began exploring ways to increase support to these two communities with dedicated community funds. Gabriola Island Community Fund Steering Committee Committee Members Gerry Stefanson Co-Chair Manfred Tempelmayr Co-Chair Charlie Cheffins Peter Dzierzawa Carol Hemrich Howard Houle Ron Slade The Gabriola Island Community Fund Steering Committee is a group of volunteer Gabriola Island residents who are working together to establish and direct the Gabriola Island Community Fund to make meaningful and lasting impacts on Gabriola Island both now and forever. This dedicated team serves to enrich the quality of life of people living on Gabriola Island. Ladysmith Community Fund Advisory Committee Committee Members Bruce Whittington Chair Doug Bell Duck Paterson Charlie Schaal The Ladysmith Community Fund Advisory Committee is a group of volunteer Ladysmith residents serving to establish and direct a permanent endowment fund for the community. Our Grants 2016 - A Big Year For Granting In Our Comunity Each year, the Nanaimo Foundation provides grants from its Vital Nanaimo Fund to local charitable organizations to help build vibrancy, health, and resiliency in our community. In 2016, thanks to the generous support from the Community Foundations of Canada, the Community Fund for Canada s 150th, and the Island Savings division of First West Credit Union, the Nanaimo Foundation s annual granting capacity more than doubled, creating a historical year of giving for the Nanaimo Foundation. Serving the Gabriola Commons Community Kitchen Several years ago, the Nanaimo Foundation provided the first grant to the Gabriola Commons to begin work on a project that was deeply needed: a community kitchen that would be commercially approved and therefore allowed to produce food that could be made available to the Gabriola community. In the spring of 2016, the Nanaimo Foundation again provided funding to the Commons, supporting the completion of this project and helping the doors open in September 2016. Nanaimo receives $15,000 from Welcome Fund for Syrian Refugees A $15,000 contribution to United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island from Community Foundation of Canada s Welcome Fund for Syrian Refugees supported local settlement efforts. As Canadians join together in welcoming refugees from Syria, the Welcome Fund provides an important investment in their successful settlement in cities across Canada. Established to respond to an urgent gap in accessible and affordable housing, the Welcome Fund invests in community-driven solutions that enable recently arrived families to transition into suitable permanent housing. The United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island, together with generous local donors, matched the $15,000 contribution from the Welcome Fund. 6 www.nanaimofoundation.com
