Today the school serves the children of diplomatic, business, academic and professional families. The students represent 37 nationalities with approximately 24% American/British/Canadian; 46% Brazilian; and 12% Latin American, 9% Asian, 7% European and 2% other. Enrollment in the pre-primary school is 169, in the elementary school 390, middle school 233, and high school 353. English is the language of instruction; a limited ESL program is available in grades nine and ten. Located in São Paulo, the second largest city in Latin America, the school s 16-acre/6.5 hectare Morumbi campus encompasses 85 classrooms, an arts center with 8 classrooms and a theater, 2 libraries, 16 computer labs [two for digital film making], over 800 computers, a 450-seat auditorium, two gymnasiums, two covered courts, one beach volleyball court, one climbing wall, one 300m track; one multi-purpose court and four tennis courts. The school is also a member of the International Baccalaureate Organization, the Association of American Schools in South America (AASSA), and NAIS.
CURRICULUM All students follow a college preparatory curriculum which leads to the American high school diploma. Seven courses are the minimum required course load per year. Students must complete eight semesters of study beyond the eighth grade for a minimum of 24 credits. The follow ing are the requirements: English 4 credits History 3 credits Language other than English 1 course per year Science 3 credits Mathematics 3 credits Visual and Performing Arts 1.5 credits Physical Education 1.5 credits Health 0.5 credits Information Sciences (Students must pass the Sophomore Project.) Students may elect to concurrently earn a Brazilian high school diploma, which requires Brazilian Social Studies and an additional year of Science and Math. International Baccalaureate courses, leading to an IB diploma, and Advanced Placement courses in calculus are also available. FACULTY There are 134 teachers of whom 61 hold Master s degrees and 2 Doctorate degrees. STUDENT EVALUATION The Upper School uses a numerical grading system. Marking standards are rigorous. The top ten students tend to have GPA s in the range 89-94. Grades in the 90-100 represent superior performance, 80-89 above average, 70-79 average, 65-69 below average, 64 and below failing grade (no credit). Alpha Honor Roll = GPA of 90 or higher (no grade below an 80), Beta Honor Roll = GPA of 82-89 (no grade below a 70). SYMBOLS EAP = English for Academic Purposes. IB = International Baccalaureate, AP = Advanced Placement, H = Honors. (Honors courses are offered in math through Geometry and Algebra II/Trigonometry). WEIGHTING SYSTEM & GRADE POINT AVERAGE NOTES Six points are added for a grade of 70 or above in weighted courses, which are marked (W). GPA is calculated on the basis of the weighted scale. Students are not ranked. GPA is calculated on Escola Graduada course work in grades 11 and 12 only. Courses satisfactorily completed at other schools are listed for credit purposes only. All courses, except EAP and pass/fail courses are used in computing the GPA. The GPA is calculated using final course grades. Activities: There are 17 after school activities: student government, Peer Group Connection, Elderly Home, Day Care, Sister School, drama, musicals, jazz band, women s choir, photography, forensics, FALA, Model United Nations, newspaper (The Talon), Knowledge Bowl, Habitat for Humanity and Grass Roots. Athletics: At both the varsity and junior varsity level Graded participates in the following sports in athletic competitions with American schools in Brazil and/or South America: basketball, soccer, indoor soccer, softball, volleyball, and cheerleading. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE In May 2007, 509 IB examinations were administered to 140 students. Students earned scores of four or better, a 92% pass rate. 24 subjects at or above world mean. All 28 diploma candidates earned the IB diploma. The average accumulated scores for a diploma recipient was 33 out of 45, with a high of 42. Since 1997, all students enrolled in the final year of an IB course are required to sit the IB exam. All HL Math students are also required to sit the AP Calculus AB and BC exams.
