APRIL 11, 2017 THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT: STEVE WOODS, PRESIDENT ANGIE DAVIS, VICE-PRESIDENT DOUG BRANDON DAVID DETZ VERNON L. TRAVIS JR. JIM SEAMAN ROBERT PYNES JR. JACKIE SELF JOHN BLANKENBAKER RANDY MARTIN SHAD STEWART GERALD COOLEY ABSENT: COL. ATHEY There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board. The meeting was opened in prayer by Robert Pynes. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Robert Pynes. On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the April 6, 2017 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes. The following Outstanding School Support Personnel were recognized and congratulated by the Board: Elementary Carmen Holder, Pickering Elementary Jr. High Julie Lawrence, Pickering High High School Alice Haymon, Anacoco High On motion of David Detz, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board voted to approve the Vernon Parish School Calendar for 2017-2018.

Vernon Travis voted NAY on this motion. On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted a resolution to accept land donation at Hicks from Meridan Land and Mineral Corporation. Meridian Land and Mineral Corporation has requested a fence to establish boundaries and also requested that if the school no longer uses the land that it revert back to Meridian. On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Robert Pynes, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims. Superintendent Williams extended his appreciation to support personnel in the schools and thanked them for their dedication and hard work. Superintendent Williams also noted the Academic Banquet on May 1 st and the Financial Disclosure Statements due May 15 th. Joey Whiddon, Transportation/Food Service Director, stated that the Vernon Parish School System is participating in a grant application that could potentially secure school buses that run on CNG at no cost to purchase. These buses would replace 2011and older models. On April 19 th from 10:00-1:00, there will be a CNG bus at the CNG site for a fueling demo as well as a ride and drive demo.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution: R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sincere sympathy to the family of Murvis Walker who recently passed away; and WHEREAS, Mr. Walker was a US Army World War II Veteran, having fought at the Battle of The Bulge; and WHEREAS, Mr. Walker was a lifetime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness. On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution: R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Thomas Tommy Perkins who recently passed away; and WHEREAS, Mr. Perkins was the father of Tracy Perkins, secretary at Pickering Elementary School; and WHEREAS, Mr. Perkins was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and many friends; now BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
