HABITAT CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT 1 Direct Interaction with Fisheries Investigations of methods to reduce bycatch During the observation scheme 2006-2007 no bycatches were detected or porpoises sighted by the observers. Implementation of methods to reduce bycatch Please provide any other relevant information, including bycatch information from opportunistic sources. After the scheme 2006-2007 porpoise bycathes have not been reported/detected or sightings of porpoises reported by the fisherman or by the fisheries authorities. SURVEYS AND RESEARCH 4.1 Overview of Research on Abundance, Distribution and Population Structure Please provide a brief summary of (and reference to) any national work. Finland is taking part to SAMBAH (Static Acoustic Monitoring of the Baltic Sea Harbour porpoise) project. In the project, 300 SAM units will be used over a two years period (2011-2012). Ca. 47 units will be deployed in Finnish waters. More info available on http://ww.sambah.org 4.2 New Technological Developments 3

INFORMATION AND EDUCATION 7.1 Public Awareness and Education Please report on any public awareness and education activities to implement or promote the Agreement to the general public and to fishermen. Finland has continued the harbour porpoise sighting campaign and received information of seven possible sightings of totally 10-12 animals in year 2011. The Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry have established a common practice of recommending fishermen to avoid fishing with nets in coastal areas where harbour porpoises have been sighted.
