2 Summer Day Camps Check out the area summer day camps being offered this summer starting in June! Come join in on the fun while learning new things! Day camps will be exploring engineering, racing, emergency preparedness, honey bees, and art! Sign up today by completing the registration form attached to the newsletter! County Council Applications Available Howard 4-H County Council is looking for energetic high school leaders! You will have the opportunity to plan county wide events for Howard County 4-H ers! You will have the responsibility to plan, coordinate, and assist with programs. Applications have been sent to all current 8 th 11 th graders. I encourage you all to apply! If you did not receive one, contact Erica. Deadline for applications is May 1! 4-H ers for 4-H Campaign Along with the State 4-H Council Finance Committee, I challenge all Howard County 4-H clubs to donate $3 per member to the campaign to reach the $29,000 goal for the state. However, if your club cannot pledge that much that is alright, because even the littlest amount counts! This money benefits 4-H members throughout the state. Let s $trengthen 4-H! Forms are due by May 15 to the Extension Office! NEW Mystery Trip SAVE THE DATE Book a seat for a 2- day overnight fun-filled trip to a mystery location on August 1-2! We will travel back in time and explore the wilderness all while having fun with 4- H ers from around the region! This opportunity is open to any 4-H er who has completed 4-6 grade! 3 Congratulations Spring Fair Participants! Howard County 4-H held the 2017 Start Your Future Here Spring Fair on Saturday, April 8 at NICC Cresco Center. Over 42 youth presented over 50 exhibits, including presentations, working exhibits, share the fun acts, and clothing events! Congratulations to everyone on a job well done! 4 Livestock IDs Livestock identifications are done through 4HOnline. To enter nonweigh in species, you will need to log into your 4HOnline family record and add the needed information to the Animal ID for each member s record. Weigh-in animals will be entered into 4HOnline by county extension staff after weigh-in. However, it is the member s responsibility to verify all the information is correct. Please see the help sheet attached in the newsletter. If you have questions still, contact the Extension Office. *Do NOT wait until the last minute to enter IDs* All IDs must be entered by 11:59 p.m. on May 15! Verify Market Animals All swine, sheep and meat goats that were weighed in have been entered into 4HOnline. Please visit your record to verify the weigh-in information is correct! Records must be verified by May 15 or the information is assumed correct! Verify by May 15! Market Broiler Pick-up For those participating in the market broiler project for 2017 chicks will be available to pick-up on Thursday, May 4 after 3 p.m. at the Extension Office. Please bring an appropriate size box or container. FSQA Training and Testing ALL Howard County 4-H & FFA members must be FSQA certified to show at the 2017 Howard County Fair or Iowa State Fair. FSQA Training will be held: Tuesday, May 23, 5-7:30 p.m. at the Featherlite Center FSQA Testing Contact the Extension Office to set up a time to come in and test Youth in grades 4-6 must attend training. Youth in grades 7-12 may choose to attend training OR complete the test-out option. Purchase A Pig for Butcher Interested in purchasing a 4-H/FFA pig for butcher? Pigs being raised at the Reicks View Ag Education Center will be available to purchase for $155 plus processing fees at the locker. You have the choice to send to the following lockers in Elma, Riceville, and Protivin. Stop by the Extension Office to sign-up and pay! Deadline to purchase a hog is May 1! Horse Workouts Arena clean up will be held on Wednesday, May 3 at 6 p.m. at the Cresco Saddle Club Arena! Please bring gloves, buckets, shovels, and muscles. Workouts will be held every Wednesday night starting May 10 at the Cresco Saddle Club Arena from 6-8 p.m. 4

Those who check out exhibits early will forfeit premium money! Cream the butter and sugars together. Add instant vanilla pudding to butter and sugar mixture and mix well. Add eggs and the root beer concentrate and beat until well incorporated. Add the flour and baking soda and mix thoroughly. Add the white chocolate chips and mix well. Roll cookie dough into 1 balls and place on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 F for 8-10 minutes. Celebrity Showmanship BEEF Howard County Alumni Committee is again sponsoring a celebrity showmanship class at the fair. Celebrity class in Beef will be offered. Showmanship class will be held in junction with the 4-H/FFA Beef show on Saturday, June 24. Interested in participating: Fair Entries Leaders will be receiving fair entry forms for static and livestock exhibits in mid-may and will be distributing them to club members. Entries are due Friday, June 2 by 4 p.m. $100 per Adult Entry paid before participation Show attire required hard soled boots and appropriate dress Beef animal must be a youth s exhibited at the 2017 fair 5

The following are some of the opportunities available to you: Fair Opportunities Bring a project to exhibit at the fair Show a pet or a bucket bottle calf Both projects and animals will be judged on Wednesday, June 21! 3 rd Grade Graduation Come celebrate your accomplishments in Clover Kids at the graduation ceremony on Wednesday, June 21 at 7:30 p.m. Summer Day Camps Come join in this summer by attending one or multiple summer day camps being offered in Howard County! We will be exploring racing, honey bees, and engineering. See attached flier for more information. We look forward to seeing familiar Clover Kids and welcoming new ones in Clover Kids next year! 8 State 4-H Conference It s not too early to mark your calendars for the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference! The dates are set for June 27-29, 2017. The theme is Start Your Future Here. This event is open to youth who completed 8 th grade. General information and last year s materials are available on the Conference and will be updated soon with this year s information! www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/iowa4hyouthconference 4-H Summer Camp Programs Registration for 4-H summer camps at the Iowa 4-H Center (Clover Woods) in Madrid, IA is OPEN! The following are the specialthemed camps being offered: June 9-11 Shooting Sports You will explore safety and education in shooting sports program by trying new skills, meeting new friends and making connections with county shooting sports clubs. Develop skills in archery, air rifle, smallbore, shotgun trap, muzzleloader and wildlife. Camp is for youth in grades 4-8 2017-2018 school year. Registration is $200 per person. June 25-29 Spanish Immersion Camp Action packed and culturally invigorating camp will get kids excited about language and culture! Campers will have tons of fun in interactive activities teaching about traditions, food, music and art of another culture and basic communication skills in another language. Open to youth entering grades 5-8 (2017-2018). Cost is $400 per youth. You can register for anyone of the first 3 camps via the online registration: https://goo.gl/ok4rd3 July 9-14 Design Dimension Camp Focus will be on 2D, 3D, and 4D thinking across disciplines while providing hands on experience with the latest design technology. June 19-22 Drone Discovery Want to have fun this summer and try something new? Interested in science and technology? Drone Discovery is about hands-on learning adventure that will explore the science behind drones and how they are being used to solve real-world problems. Open to youth entering 5-8 grade for 2017-2018 school year. Registration is $350 per youth. 8
