Bach s Orgelbüchlein Part 1 Lecture/Demonstration by JOHN DAVID PETERSON Robert Wisniewski, AAGO St. James Episcopal Church, 3400 Calumet St., Clintonville John Brombaugh Organ, Opus 4 Dean s Corner A LITTLE BOOK FOR THE ORGAN Wherein the beginning organist may learn to perform chorales of every part and also acquire facility in the use of the pedal......to the most high God alone be praise, for what herein is written for man s instruction. The Western classical music tradition contains many delightful collections of musical miniatures: Chopin s Preludes, Beethoven s Bagatelles and Ecossaises, the versets of Couperin s two organ Masses, the Melodies of Gabriel Fauré and Reynaldo Hahn, to name just a few. Yet J.S. Bach s collection of liturgical miniatures, his Orgelbüchlein (literally, little organ book ) remains unique among all of these collections. Why? Part of the answer surely lies in Bach s genius for creating precise musical metaphors for the images and emotions contained in the 18 th century Lutheran chorales associated with these pieces. Another part is found in Bach s above-quoted preface to the Orgelbüchlein. He manifests here three qualities which are particularly relevant to us as organists and church musicians: his genuine humility, reverence toward God, and concern for the musical education of his fellow human beings. We should pause momentarily and recall that, prior to 1800, precomposed keyboard pieces functioned mainly as models for young musicians learning to compose, and then improvise, similar pieces. It cannot be said too many times that keyboard music performed in public before 1800 was largely improvised! The musical performance bar was in that Inside this issue: respect set much higher than it is today. Thus Bach has given us not only a book of exquisitely-crafted yet eminently practical liturgical organ Columbus Day Organ Crawl 2 Calendar of Events 3 miniatures; he has given us a window into eighteenthcentury culture and thought. Come to our November Positions Available 4 meeting at St. James Episcopal and let John David Peterson and John Brombaugh s 18 th Dean s Corner (conclusion) 4 -century style organ lead you through that magic window to discover Bach s Concerts & Conventions 5 music anew. Missing from photo: Carol Ann Bradley Fifty-five organ enthusiasts went on the Columbus Day Organ Crawl on October 10th. The coach departed from Columbus promptly at 8 AM as planned. The day began with Dene Barnard playing the Flentrop tracker at the First Presbyterian Church in South Charleston; in London, Bill Miller played the unchanged 1881 Felgemaker tracker at Trinity Episcopal, and Carol Ann Bradley played the 1894 Johnson & Son (rebuilt by Muller in 1988 and 1995) at the First United Methodist Church. The coach then motored back to East Broad Street where Jim Hildreth played the 1965 Austin at First Church of Christ, Scientist. A hearty lunch was served at Schmidt s Sausage House in German Village. The bus then took the group back to the east side of Columbus where Scott Hayes played on the 1929 Skinner currently being brought back to life by several dedicated volunteers. That instrument suffered severe water damage. Sally Casto performed on Henry Pilcher s 1930 instrument in the Fourth Avenue Christian Church in Victorian Village area. The group boarded the coach and went to Summit United Methodist in the OSU campus area where Paul Thornock played the 1989 Riegger tracker instrument. Thanks to Judy Willour for bringing some refreshments to the church for some informal chat time. The afternoon ended with the hearing of the Schantz organ in Mershon Auditorium on the OSU campus. What a treat to hear this instrument rarely heard in recent years, and hear Wilbur Held s commentary on the design of the instrument in 1957 with additions in 1969. Many folks on the tour had attended the dedication recital Dr Held played back in 1957. Hearing the instrument, and having the opportunity to hear Dr. Held s commentary on the Schantz, as well as renew acquaintances with him was a perfect end to the day. There are numerous pictures of the day taken by John McFadden. You can view them on the Chapter website <www.agocolumbus.org> Thanks to Tim Smith for organizing this event, securing the players, printing the booklet about the instruments, and making all the arrangements. Thanks also to Mike Herzog and John Muller and their shops for preparing the instruments for the day. It was a delightful way to Discover Columbus.
