Approval of minutes from The minutes were approved as typed-with correction of Sue Ober excused. Order of Business Bylaws Update/Filling Council Vacancies Dignity and Respect-Aimee Social Networking Articles- Aimee My Nursing Career-Diane Corr HR Statistics-Joyce Doody Aimee introduced and welcomed our new advisor, Colleen Sunday, Clinical Director of Professional Development. New member, Regina Easler, RN. Aimee announced the first recipient of the Dignity and Respect Champion.Tammy Welter. Tammy told about the breakfast she went to at Shadyside. Every hospital was represented. Articles were sent to members prior to meeting. Aimee asked that everyone look at them. Mary sent them out from the ANA on how to protect the patient. Octobers approved projects: 1.Rhoda Shoaf-RIC RN, Noise reduction in the ICU 2. Bonnie Brannagan-4B RN, Improving pain scores 3. Heather Santillo-PACU RN, Perioperative certification champion November approved projects: 1. Vicky Simone-3B RN, NODA Champion Turnover for October was 3.9%; she thinks this is lower than the systemwide total. Top reasons for leaving: schedule and relocation. For Magnet we need to be knowledgeable about the turnover. Adele asked if there was a specific unit that has a higher turnover rate that the others. Diane asked what are we doing to keep people here. The PDC is looking into compiling the data and reasons why people are leaving. Joyce can send out the exit interview s so we can see the 2
questions. Joyce suggested as a council we promote face to face exit interviews to get more information. Council members could do the exit interviews. All feel that people are more likely to talk to a peer than a boss. CPR Updates-Colleen Sunday Dress Code Update-Aimee Orientation-Linda Zsolcsak Presently the staff calls the day before they expire or after they expire to take a class. Moving forward Nursing Ed will offer CPR classes 2 half days per month. They will go to the units and make the staff aware that it is their responsibility to renew. Nursing Ed will send out a schedule of the classes. The UD s get an email as to who is about to expire. Anyone who does not take their CPR will be removed from the schedule without pay. Linda and Aimee met with Mary. Mary is looking into a few specifics, she didn t feel comfortable approving yet. For example the artificial nails are up for debate. Shadyside and Presby have gone to uniforms with UPMC logo. Linda asked if everyone did their surveys. We were asked to look if the information given is useful or not. A few members shared what their results were: Sue F-would be helpful if someone from the unit was there to go over the unit, how the day goes on. Shari-It is mentioned a lot that this doesn t pertain to the ED. Heather-had one good and one stuggling. Said it seemed disorganized. Linda-Needed more information on how to use the task list, how to check doctors orders, there are so many down times-have a downtime course. Karen collected surveys. Diane asked if the data will 3
be shared with the UD s. My Nursing Career-Linda Zsolcsak Linda and Aimee have been working on a personal congratulatory email for staff that have gotten certified, a new degree or became a sr. professional RN. We need to find out who is newly certified as of January 1 st. The info is only as accurate as the staff turns in to HR. In order to get the congratulations the staff should turn paper into UD, and then the email can go out. We have a list of who gets approved for Sr. Prof. RN. HR will give a list of who became certified. Aimee made a template of the email. Credit Union Update-Aimee Peer Review-Linda Zsolcsak We have to change the name of the account. It was Nursing Education Fund; the new name voted on will be the Professional Development Council Account. Lisa Lehman will stay on as the other name on the account. The PDC was peer review champion. Starting in December there will be a systemwide formal peer review. We need to marry the idea to improve patient satisfaction, performance, etc. If you noticed someone did a good job on something but not so good on other things fill out a peer review on co-workers. This is a way to promote a friendly environment for constructive criticism. Tools-need to decide where they will go on each unit. These are tools for PPC rep, PDC re, Clinician and UD. Each unit is to specify it for their unit. 4
Guest Speaker-Sally Mikesic Sally came to talk about the leadership development intensive group project. Driven by Holly Lorenz and Dawndra Jones. Looks into a way to give nurses a way to receive information via mobile devices. They are looking into making a free app that can be downloaded to personal cell phones to access nursing grand rounds, newsletters, jobs, CEU s, and the infonet. This is a way to provide efficient communications to RN s who don t sit at a desk. Respectfully submitted, Danita Novak Business Assistant 5
