The First Observatory on Islands Tourism The Observatory on Tourism in the European Islands -OTIE- is a non-profit international organization, which was founded in 2007 by seven European Chambers of Commerce with the aim of analysing and monitoring tourism in the islands of their respective countries. OTIE members 2017 Insular Chambers of Commerce take part in the Observatory, according to three categories of founding, ordinary and supporting members. Various basic services are addressed to OTIE members. Members representatives are the components of the Assembly which annually convenes with the aim to approve the decisions taken by the Executive Committee. International Network 2017 OTIE has olso been affiliated to the Register of Interest Representatives of the European Commission since 2008; as a scientific body it cooperates with several European networks, as well as with some universities and observatories, in order to foster island tourism. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OTIE carries out studies, research and anticipatory analyses on tourism development, by relying on its database on island tourism and on island tourism and on advanced software. Thnks to its Scientifics Commitee and external partnerships, the Observatory produces statistical analysis which constitute the reviews and journals by major international piblishers. An OTIE quarterly review is also expected to be started, on which remarkable results about research on European island tourism will be included Islands database OTIE has collected geographical and tourism data abuot more than 1.000 European islands in a database. which is periodically updated thanks to the cooperation of the main European statistical offices. In the processing of its data, OTIE makes use of advanced statistical software which allows to extrapolate anticipatory data on tourism. Report on tourism OTIE prepares commissioned specific reports on islands tourism, both generic and thematic to emphasising the current situation and proving guidance for future planning options.

Scientific production OTIE takes part in the international database on island tourism, by publishing on the most prestigious international reviews. Focus on tourism OTIE periodically updates the focus on tourism in European islands, i.e. a document which compares indicators of tourism development referring to supply and demand in Mediterranean, Atlantic, Baltic and French overseas islands. Monitoring&trends OTIE carries out a periodical monitoring of the development of tourism in the European islands, with special attention to possible future performance. TRAINING Training activities organised by OTIE aim to offer participants a great deal of suggestions and stimuli deriving from the best practises in island tourism within the European Union. Thus participants have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge with reference to the organization and management of island tourism. To this purpose OTIE involves university professors and international researches woking in the field of tourism. Courses are generally held either in European islands, where theme of island tourism is proposed to the European Union. Courses on Tourism for State Officials The purpose of training activities for state officials is generally twofold, i.e.: on the hand, it deepens specific tourism issues and, on the other, it provides a model of best practices to be adopted in the future planning options. Summer&Winter Schools OTIE organises Summer and Winter Schools for university students of the European Union, as a joint work with other institutions and higher educational boards.

Workshops OTIE organises workshops for university researchers, aiming to broaden issues concerning island tourism by directly involving its Scientific Commitee. Monitoring activities for students OTIE offers monitoring activities aimed at understanding the economic, cultural, social and enviromental impact of events and particular issues in local areas. EVENTS&MEETINGS OTIE organises meetings, lectures, scinetific conferances and panels, the purpose of which is to share knowladge and competance on an international level about issues linked to tourism development. Besides, OTIE, as the coordinator of special sessions, also takes part in conferances organised by other institutions and boards. Conventions&Meetings OTIE organises autonomous or commissioned conventions and meetings on tourism, both in Sicily and abroad. The involvement of the Observatory is generally liked to international speakers participation in events. Panels OTIE organises panels on tourism, where the main stakeholders in the sector are invited to exchange opinions, according to the logic of systemic sharing of tourism development Scientific Conference OTIE annually organises and takes part to scientific conferences on specific issues concerning tourism and island tourism, which is attended by European and non-european university professors and researchers.

PLANNING OTIE partecipates in European Community calls as well as national and regional projects, both as a lead and as an ordinary partner. Besides OTIE contributes to support the planning of other organizations, both in drawing up projects and in establishing partnerships, thanks to its extensive netvwork of contacts and its relevant competence in European tourism. Furthermore, OTIE applies innovative management methodologies on its own projects and takes into account issues linked to sustainability, which is particularly relevant in island tourism. Europena Project Planning OTIE participates in the main call for proposals of the European Union, by proposing projects in line with the requests and objectives of each call. Support to Partnerships OTIE supports other institutions in establishing local and, above all, international partnerships. Thanks to its network of contracts, OTIE succeeds in setting up highly reliable and qualified partnerships. Partecipation in thirdparty projects OTIE, as a scientific partner, takes part in several European projects by providing its contribution, thus guaranteeing high standards of project iimplementation. Project Management Methodologies In its projects OTIE applies the newest, sustainable, recognised and certified methodologies. Among these, there is the PM4ESD a new methodology which has its strength in the issue of sustainability in tourism. Besides, OTIE being a member of associations dealing with tourism accessibility, it takes into consideration the main indicators in this segment of demand.

DOCUMENTATION CENTRE At OTIE Insular Documentation Centre, you can have access to books, reviews, articles and documents on scientific data in the tourism field. They are available to university researchers as well as to those involved in island tourism planning on a European scale. Texts Thanks to its own purchase or to donations, the Documentation Centre holds more than 1000 texts on tourism and islands, both in Italian and foreign languages. Services Texts and reviews of Documentation Centre can be consulted <nd borrowed on subscription. Copies of parts of texts or scientific articles can be required. On commission OTIE extrapolates literature for scientific articles. Reviews Several international reviews on tourism are catalogued in the Documentation Centre, all of them can be consulted in digital format.
