Introduction The Nutrition Communication Workshop was organized with the aim to: Increase awareness for businesses, especially the SMEs, on the importance of strengthening nutrition literacy on their various social media platforms by crafting the right message for their products, delivering healthy eating messages, understand current trends in food purchase and the socio-environmental influences that determines the consumer s choice.

First Session The event served as an avenue to enlighten businesses on the; importance of nutrition communication in Nigeria, guidelines and policies around nutrition communication, tips for using the social media to communicate nutrition and ways to harness alternative channels that can make nutrition interesting. The expected outcomes included; Improved knowledge: A shift in perception to communicate differently. Better understanding of what the regulators want from Businesses. Increase of SBN membership to join the SBN in the fight against malnutrition in Nigeria. Second Session The panel discussion was anchored by Hannah Theobald (SBN Global Country Support Manager), while Mrs. Margaret Eshiett (Ag. Director Business Support, Standard Organisation of Nigeria), Dr. Chris Isokpunwu (Head of Nutrition, Federal Ministry of Health/SUN Focal person), Mr. Abdusalam Ozigi (National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control) sat on the panel to discuss and answer questions about National Laws/Guidelines/Policies on Food and International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes (BMS). Third Session The final session introduced the participants to different social media platforms, crafting nutrition messages for products to fit each platform, delivering healthy eating messages, increasing customer base and profitability, barriers to effective Social Marketing Communication, challenges of online selling and Social Enterprise. An SBN Member (August Secrets) also shared her experience of online marketing of her products, the challenges of trying to expand the business offline and routine of getting regulatory approval of products and a consultant from DALBERG spoke to the SBN members on understanding their financial needs to know how best to access finance support. Ekpedeme Inyang, Consultant from DALBERG Toyin Onigbanjo, CEO, August Secrets sharing her experience Mrs. Iquo Ukoh talking to participants on crafting the right nutrition message for the consumers.
WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES Participants were divided into 3 groups for Group Work to make a presentation on the below: Biscot Ogi is a breakfast pap made from yellow corn, soya beans and sorghum. The product is to be launched into the Lagos market in July 2017. - Design a label for this product and include the nutrition benefits on the pack. - Craft messaging in not more than 5 words for promoting the product on Facebook and Instagram. INTRODUCTION OF NUTRITOOL TO MEMBERS As the workshop drew to a close, Ivy Ibiso King-Harry intimated the SBN Members on the need to introduce the Nutritool (A business diagnostic tool) to help members look at their business with the lens of nutrition. The Nutritool generates results to help business understand their markets, supply chain etc.; that shows where they are right now in terms of nutrition as opposed to where they want to be. SBN intends to address the issue of the nutrition gaps within businesses collectively.
