Village of Hanover Park Fire Department Department Rolls out New Squad Program Craig A. Haigh, MS, EFO, NRP Fire Chief, Hanover Park Fire Department One Village One Future Hanover Park Squad 15 Over the last several months the department has been working to roll out a new Squad program in compliance with a regional response plan developed jointly with our neighbors and our regional dispatch center. Under the plan, specific area departments will provide specialized response services not only within their own community but also to neighboring jurisdic ons. Each of these select departments have agreed to enhance rescue training as well as become the regional experts in a specific field. Hanover Park has taken on the task of Hazardous Materials response along with enhancing capabili es and knowledge in heavy rescue which includes large vehicle extrica on/rescue, machine rescue, and downed firefighter rescue. Personnel are also receiving training in structural collapse, trench collapse/rescue, rope rescue, confined space rescue, and dive/swi water rescue. The goal of the Squad system is to enhance regional efficiency, reduce duplica on of services and control costs. The system works as part of the long standing MABAS System (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) that now serves as a na onal model for how departments can be er respond together to handle major emergency incidents. Learn more about MABAS at h p://www.mabas-il.org/pages/default.aspx. Squad 15 s Hazardous Materials Unit For Hanover Park s role, the Department is opera ng a custom designed Rescue/ Engine known as Squad 15. Along with this new Rescue/Engine the squad personnel also use a second unit when needed that brings all the hazardous material equipment and supplies. The Department is excited to be part of this new regional deployment system. www.hpil.org September - October 2017 Public Works Help Keep Your Storm Drain System Ready to Go The grated storm drains that you see on almost every street corner allows rain water to drain from Village streets and surrounding proper es. They are especially important during storms when the high volume of water falling on streets would otherwise cause flooding. Also known as catch basins, storm drains are the entryway from our streets to our storm water system that ul mately drains to the DuPage River. When storm drains get clogged with fallen leaves and debris, water can no longer be drained from the street. Water ponds along streets and can flood intersec ons and homes. Localized street flooding can be a hazard to the traveling public. Contrary to popular belief, pet wastes, oil and other materials dumped into catch basins do not go to the wastewater treatment plant, but instead flow directly into the West Branch of the DuPage River. For example, dumping five quarts of oil can create a slick as large as two football fields and persist on mud or plants for six months or more. It is important to monitor and clean catch basins to prevent street flooding, property damage, and hazards to the traveling public. Please help us keep the system clean and ready to accept water. Stand on the curb and use a rake or pitch fork to clear leaves, limbs, and debris from the catch basin. Do not a empt to remove the grate, only the debris on top of the grate. The best me to inspect the storm drain in front of your house or business is before a rain storm. Monitor and clean the catch basin in the fall when the trees are shedding their leaves. When the forecast calls for heavy rainfall or snow and ice, remove debris from the catch basin before a storm. A er a winter storm, maintain the openings to catch basins by clearing away any snow or ice. Create a 10 to 12-inch path along the curb for mel ng snow and ice to drain to the catch basin. 9th Annual Household Recycling Event Saturday, September 23rd 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Commuter Lot (Lake Street & Church Street) THERE WILL BE NO ELECTRONIC RECYCLING AT THIS EVENT. Brush Pick Up Schedule The Village s final brush pickup cycle will take place during the month of October in accordance with the following schedule: Area 1 and 2 - October 2 (Streets North of Lake Street) Area 3 and 4 - October 16 (Streets South of Lake Street) All branches must be out by 7:00 am on the first day of pickup for your area. If you miss your scheduled pickup, you may put brush and branches out for pickup by Allied Waste services on Friday s through December 1, 2017. Wood chips, which are a by-product of the Brush Pick Up program, are available for pick up or delivery. If interested, please contact Public Works at 630.823.5700 for further informa on or to request a delivery. No Yard Waste S cker Required for Leaf Collec on in November As a benefit to the residents of Hanover Park, leaf collec on in November will not require a yard waste s cker to be collected by Republic Services/Allied Waste. This is during the month of NOVEMBER ONLY. Leaf collec on in all other months will occur as it has previously. All you have to do is rake your leaves, put them into a recyclable yard waste bag, and set them at the curb on your normal trash pickup day. Village of Hanover Park How to Read Your Water Meter The large sweep hand on the dial measures water use in gallons. One gallon or one cubic foot of water passes through the water meter as the sweep hand moves from one number to the next (e.g., 0 to 1). A complete rota on equals 10 gallons depending on the unit measured. Most analog dials have a low-flow indicator that turns as water moves through the water meter. This typically looks like a small triangle (shown), star or gear. The Police Department Hosts a Successful 2017 COPS Day Picnic One Village One Future On July 14th, 2017 at 5:00 p.m., the Hanover Park Police Department held its Annual COPS Day Picnic at the Park District property at Church and Walnut. The picnic fosters a rela onship between the police department and the community it serves. The picnic included appearances by several local mascots, including Coop from the Schaumburg Boomers and Skates from the Chicago Wolves, as well as McGruff the Crime Dog. The picnic also featured a presenta on by K-9 officer Wiebe and his partner, Echo. An emergency vehicle display with specialized equipment from departments all over the area was very popular, especially with our younger a endees! Several local social service organiza ons were on hand to display their offerings while members of the police department prepared and served nearly 1,100 hotdogs and refreshments to residents from the Community. The COPS Day Picnic was followed by the first-ever Movie in the Park with an outdoor showing of Moana. Leak Detection Test Thank you to everyone who a ended and to everyone who par cipated, helping to make this year s picnic one of the most successful ever! Once you know how to read your water meter, you can begin to check for the presence of con nuous leaks by following the procedure below. Do not use water or operate any water-using devices in or around your home during the test. Step-by-Step Instructions 1. Observe the sweep hand. If it is moving, you have a con nuous leak. 2. Observe the low-flow indicator. If it is moving, you have a con nuous leak. 3. Some leaks are so small that the movement is almost undetectable. To determine if you have a slow leak: a. Read your water meter and record the numbers. Use the number indicated by the sweep arm as the final digit. b. Wait 20 minutes then read your water meter again and record the numbers. c. Subtract the first water meter reading from the second. d. If Gallons Used is greater than zero you have a con nuous leak. Page 7
