T cmply with this plicy, the Linden City Bard f Educatin adpts the fllwing gals: The Linden City Bard f Educatin s Child Nutritin Prgram cmplies with federal, state, and lcal requirements. The Linden City Bard f Educatin Child Nutritin Prgram is accessible t all students. All Linden City schl-based activities are cnsistent with the wellness plicy gals. Linden City Schls will prvide nutritin educatin that is apprpriate fr students. Nutritin educatin will be integrated int students curriculum t teach and fster lifelng eating. Examples include: Newsletters/flyers prvided t students and parents Develpment f strategies t bring in utside resurces t prvide nutritinal educatin Infrmatin prvided during pen huse and parenting days Infrmatin psted n schl system website Linden City Schls will prvide pprtunities fr students t develp the knwledge and skills fr specific activities t maintain physical activities, t maintain physical fitness, t ensure students regular participatin in physical activity, and t teach shrt and lng-term benefits f a physically active and healthful lifestyle. This is prvided thrugh: Elementary students receive a minimum f sixty (60) minutes f health educatin per week and thirty (30) minutes f physical educatin per day. High schl students receive a minimum f ½ unit f health educatin. Physical activity will be integrated acrss curricula and thrughut the schl day. Physical educatin curses will be the envirnment where students learn, practice, and are assessed n develpmentally apprpriate mtr skills and knwledge. Time alltted fr physical activity will be cnsistent with state standards. A physical educatin perid will be prvided which is nt used as a punishment r reward. Physical educatin includes the instructin f individual activities as well as cmpetitive and nn-cmpetitive team sprts t encurage life-lng physical educatin. Adequate equipment is available fr all students t participate in physical educatin. The schl prvides a physical and scial envirnment that encurages safe and enjyable activity fr all students, including thse wh are nt athletically gifted. Linden City Schls will prvide a safe, cmfrtable, and pleasing schl envirnment that allw ample time and space fr eating meals. Fd and/r physical activity will nt be used as a reward r punishment. Nutritin Standards Students life-lng eating habits are greatly influenced by the types f fds and beverages made available in their daily envirnment. The Linden City Bard f Educatin has established the fllwing guidelines fr all fds and beverages sld r served t students during the schl day. The schl day is defined as the perid f time frm midnight befre the schl day starts t thirty (30) minutes after the end f the fficial schl day. All fds and beverages prvided t students during the schl day shall meet the nutritinal recmmendatins f the U.S. Dietary Guidelines fr Americans, Alabama s Healthy Snack Standards fr Fds and Beverages at Schl, and the Smart Snacks in Schl: USDA s All Fds Sld in Schls Standards. Reimbursable schl meals will be n less restrictive than regulatins and guidance issued by the Secretary f Agriculture. All cmpetitive fds sld t students during the schl day may nt be sld in a time frame f ne hur befre, during, r ne hur after reimbursable schl meals are served. Any fd sld in schls must: 1. Be a whle grain-rich prduct; r 2. Have as the first ingredient a fruit, a vegetable, a dairy prduct, r prtein fd; r 3. Be a cmbinatin fd that cntains at least ¼ cup f fruit and/r vegetable; r 4. Cntain 10% f the Daily Value (DV) f ne f the nutrients f public health cncern in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines fr Americans (calcium, ptassium, vitamin D, r dietary fiber). a. On July 1, 2016, fds may nt qualify using the 10% DV criteria. 5. Be a fd that is authrized by the snack calculatr. a. Plain water (with r withut carbnatin 2. Unflavred lw fat milk 3. Unflavred r flavred fat free milk and milk alternatives permitted by NSLP/SBP 4. 100% fruit r vegetable juice and 5. 100% fruit r vegetable juice diluted with water (with r withut carbnatin), and n added sweeteners. Elementary schls may sell up t 8-unce prtins, while middle schls and high schls may sell up t 12-unce prtins f milk and juice. There is n prtin size limit fr plain water. Additinal Beverage Optins fr High Schls: 1. N mre than 20-unce prtins f a. Calrie-free, favred water (with r withut carbnatin); and b. Other flavred and/r carbnated beverages that are labeled t cntain i. < 5 calries per 8 fluid unces r ii. 10 calries per 20 fluid unces 2. N mre than 12-unce prtins f a. Beverages with i. 40 calries per 8 fluid unces r ii. 60 calries per 12 fluid unces All grains shall be whle grain-rich. Prducts are cnsidered whle grain-rich if a whle grain prduct is listed as the primary grain ingredient in the ingredient statement. Examples include whle wheat flur, cracked wheat, brwn rice, yellw crn meal and atmeal. Sack lunches prepared at hme, pre-packaged meals r purchased fast fds, and the accmpanying beverages cnsumed in the cafeteria shuld be packaged in unlabeled, nn-glass cntainers. These fd items are nt t be shared with ther students at schl. ther students wuld nt be able t identify the cmmercial fd. This t will assist in nt cmprmising the nutritinal guidelines and prmte student health. Teachers are required t set examples fr students by adhering t the wellness plicy and prmting habits fr life-lng healthy eating. Qualified child nutritin prfessinals shall prvide students with access t a variety f affrdable, nutritius, and appealing fds that meet the health and nutritin needs f students; shall accmmdate the religius, ethnic, and cultural diversity f the student bdy, when pssible in meal planning; and shall prvide clean, safe, and pleasant settings and adequate time fr students t eat. T the maximum extent practicable, all schls in ur district shall encurage participatin in available federal schl meal prgrams, including the Schl Breakfast Prgram and Natinal Schl Lunch Prgram. Schls shall nt use fds r beverages, especially thse that d nt meet the nutritin standards fr fds and beverages sld individually, as rewards fr academic perfrmance r gd behavir, and shall nt withhld fd r beverages (including fd served thrugh schl meals) as a punishment. Fundraising Activities All fundraising activities that invlve the selling f fd during schl hurs r as students gather n the schl campus befre schl begins r as students wait n transprtatin r therwise exit the schl campus fllwing schl dismissal shuld adhere t the Smart Snacks in Schl Plicy and shuld reinfrce fd chices that prmte gd health. All events utside f the schl day are nt affected by this requirement and bster clubs, etc. are free t select items fr sale fr specific fundraising and cncessin sales as lng as the activity des nt cnflict with this psitin. The sale f fd items that meet nutritin requirements at fundraisers are nt limited in any way under the standards. Hwever, these fundraising activities can nly ccur after the last lunch perid. The standards d nt apply during nn-schl hurs, n weekends, and at ff-campus fundraising events. The standards prvide a special exemptin fr infrequent fundraisers that d nt meet the nutritin standards. The Alabama State Department f Educatin allws each schl in a district t have thirty (30) exempt fundraisers per year. Outside rganizatins shall nt be allwed t slicit, advertise, r sell gds r services in the schls r schl district withut written apprval frm the Superintendent. Classrm Parties/Celebratins The fllwing guidelines are recmmended fr parties and celebratins invlving fd in the classrm: Acceptable beverages include water, milk, and 100% fruit juice. Candy, sda, and chips are nt permitted. Families are encuraged t feature primarily fresh fruits and vegetables fr any classrm celebratins invlving fd during the schl day. Celebratins shuld be scheduled utside f the lunch perid. Parties that verlap with the lunch perid have a negative financial impact n the schl lunch prgram, making it harder t imprve the verall quality f schl fd. Principals are strngly urged t limit schl wide lunch celebratins (such as annual Thanksgiving meals) t ne per year, and t schedule all ther such celebratins after the lunch perid. Birthday Parties at Schl: 1. Cake r cupcakes may be served fr birthday but fruit r vegetable muffins (banana, apple, zucchini, carrt, etc.) are recmmended alternatives t cake. Teachers are strngly urged t limit such parties t ne per mnth fr all students brn in that mnth, with ne cake fr all t share. 2. Party bags cntaining fd are strngly discuraged and candy is nt permitted at schl. Pencils, stickers, etc. are fun treats that can be included in party bags. Fd Safety In accrdance with the USDA Child Nutritin Reauthrizatin Act, each cafeteria manager shall initiate and implement a Fd Safety Plan based n Hazard Analysis Critical Cntrl Pint principals. Each schl will be prvided with Standard Operating Prcedures that shall be used t establish a Fd Safety Plan and mnitring prcedures at each schl cafeteria. Mnitring and Plicy Review Fr the purpse f accuntability, the Child Nutritin Prgram Directr and a schl designee will cnduct mnitring. The Child Nutritin Prgram Directr will ensure cmpliance with federal and state guidelines and established district-wide nutritin and physical activity wellness plicies. In each schl, the principal r designee shall ensure cmpliance with thse plicies in his/her schl and shall reprt n the schl s cmpliance t the Child Nutritin Directr. The District Wellness Cmmittee shall review the Wellness Plicy as changes ccur. Schls shall establish cmmittees that shall mnitr the established strategic plan n a cntinuus basis t ensure that fds in vending machines, schl stres, a la carte sales, fundraising activities, fd made available t students during class parties, r fd given ut t students meet the established nutritinal requirements. Each Schl Administratr shall prvide a statement in writing t the Superintendent that his/her schl is in cmpliance with the nutritinal requirements at the start f each schl semester. Each schl shall maintain a written cpy f the strategic plan and have it available during audits and inspectins. The plan shall cntain a list f all snacks that have been analyzed fr nutritinal cntent and apprved fr vending sales. Assessments shall be repeated every three years by the schl administratr t help review plicy cmpliance, assess prgress, and determine areas in need f imprvement. As part f that review, the schl district shall review ur nutritin and physical activity plicies; prvisin f an envirnment that supprts healthy eating and physical activity; and nutritin and physical educatin plicies and prgram elements. The district, and individual schls within the district, shall, as necessary, revise the wellness plicies and develp wrk plans t facilitate their implementatin.
