affiliate & supporting member NEWS Society of Philadelphia submitted by Jean Joka, Publicity Director Chopin Concert On Sunday, March 23, 2014 the Society of Philadelphia hosted the 47th Annual Chopin Concert at Holy Family University, Education & Technology Center, Philadelphia, PA with guest pianist Magdalena Baczewska, the recipient of outstanding achievement awards and truly a talented pianist. She comes from a musical family and started playing the piano at the age of five in her native Poland. President Marie Hejnosz welcomed everyone and Deborah Majka, Concert chairperson and Honorary Consul of Poland for Southeastern Pennsylvania, who introduced Ms. Baczewska. The theme of the program was Chopin: Musical Inspirations and the Music He Inspired. During each selection Magdalena explainied some background on the featured selections and various cultural figures including Chopin s musical hero Johann Sebastian Bach and Chopin s friendships with Franz Liszt and Polish national poet Adam Mickiewicz. After the intermission Magdalena focused on the Polish national musical style, particularly the mazurka. The concert concluded with the New Generation: George Gershwin, Rhapsody in Blue. Magdalena s style of playing draws the audience to the stage to become part of the music that is being played with taste, purity of tone and inspiration. She is a true musical asset not just to our Polish community but to the American community at large. During the reception that followed the concert, Magdalena signed copies of her bestselling albums Music for Dreams which can be purchased by accessing the website www.bluesleepmusic.com. Walter Golaski Historical Marker At noon, on Saturday May 17th, approximately sixty people gathered on Lancaster Walk, near 34th Street, on Drexel University s campus to witness the official dedication of a marker for Dr. Walter Golaski, a well-respected member of American Polonia, biomedical engineer and former Chairman of the Kosciuszko Foundation Board of Trustees. The event, organized by the Society of Philadelphia with assistance from the Poles in America Foundation, was opened by PHS President Marie Hejnosz with a welcome to those assembled. Richard Sand, member of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission spoke on behalf the commissioners. Then a tribute letter from the Honorable Michael Nutter, Mayor of Philadelphia was read.
