FIVE FOCAL POINTS FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2016-2017 1 Strengthening links with academic leadership of UNICA Member Universities During the past academic year, we worked towards reinforcing the relationship with Rectors and Presidents of UNICA Member Universities. To this end, we enhanced our communication with academic leaders by increasing the frequency of our newsletters (from quarterly to monthly), providing executive summaries of Steering Committee meetings and organising more meetings appealing to representatives of academic leadership. We will continue this work in the new academic year, devoting special attention to working with female academic leaders from UNICA Member Universities and encouraging their involvement in the activities and the decision-making of the Network. Other initiatives envisaged for the academic year 2016-2017 include the cooperation with the recently established Women Rectors Association (EWORA) and the development of an Erasmus+ Capacity Building project proposal related to gender equality and governance at universities of the South Mediterranean region. 4 2015-2016

Providing a valuable forum for the members of UNICA community Responding swiftly and adequately to the needs and challenges voiced by our Members is our priority. In this regard, we have been working towards increasing the ownership and visibility of UNICA Working Groups. In the academic year 2016-2017, we want to establish regular meetings with Chairs of UNICA Working Groups to discuss how we can better support the development of their activities and project proposals. At the same time, we will seek to encourage inter-network projects bringing together two or more UNICA Member Universities, such as the idea of a joint UNICA summer school that emerged during the UNICA IRO meeting 2016 in Dubrovnik. Last but not least, we will support the largest group in our Network s community - the students - by continuing to actively involve them in the programmes of UNICA meetings and to engage in student-centred projects, such as HousErasmus, MappED!, and CALOHEE. UNICA Work Plan 5

Enhancing cooperation with other networks and Higher Education organisations ongoing structured cooperation with European University Association (EUA), International Association of Universities (IAU), Scholars at Risk (SAR), student associations (Erasmus Student Network, European Students Union) and peer university networks (Coimbra Group, Compostela Group, SGroup European Universities Network) as well as other HE organisations, joining forces on special initiatives related to social responsibility, intercultural dialogue, ethics and values in Higher Education, organising a joint networks conference on rankings together with the Coimbra Group of Universities and EUROPAEUM, to be hosted by Charles University (dates to be announced). 6 2015-2016

Increasing the focus on the University in the City By pursuing UNICA s involvement in the Diplomatic, Academic, Economic (DEA) Missions organised by CIDIC (International Consular and Diplomatic Circle) and by developing further the University, Culture and the City initiative, we want to place emphasis on the common denominator of UNICA Member Universities: their location in Capital Cities, their pivotal role in the Cities cultural and economic development, and their interaction with the city and regional institutions. UNICA Work Plan 7

Supporting Human Resources management and professionalisation of administrative staff at universities Conscious of the major changes that affect the human resources management at universities and building upon the outcomes of the IMOTION (Staff mobility) and PRIDE (Professionals in Doctoral Education) projects, the UNICA Steering Committee began discussions on establishing a new working group Human Resource Management in Universities. The new group, to be officially launched in early 2017, will bring together Vice-Rectors responsible for human resources, Heads of HR and senior HR managers at UNICA member universities. It will seek to address the emerging phenomena and the most topical questions related to Human Resources in Higher Education, including the roles, and career development of blended professionals, internationalisation of university HR, and the job attractiveness of Higher Education sector. Apart from serving as a forum for the exchange of experience and good practice, the group will also aim to become a laboratory of new solutions that could help overcome the challenges faced by university HR managers. 8 2015-2016
