WHY DO WE VOLUNTEER The Story Behind Our Actions

THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER

SESSION OBJECTIVES Define and recognize the essentials of the hospice volunteer Identify four components used in recruiting and retaining volunteers Recognize successful volunteer training & development modules used in hospice programs Appraise the professional ethics while preventing potential liabilities Classify the various roles volunteers play in the hospice program

MAKING A DIFFERENCE THE END OF LIFE REFLECTION Hospice remains committed to providing care that treats the person, not the disease, and emphasizes quality of life, not duration..

THE IMPACT OF THE HOSPICE VOLUNTEER What is Hospice? Follows a palliative care philosophy. * Primary goal is in reducing severity of disease symptoms rather than providing a cure Offers comfort and dignity to the patient dealing with illness Treats the patient holistically, physically, spiritually, and emotionally Reaches out to the families, caregivers all with incredible support and assistance of the volunteers.. Hospice would not be complete without Volunteers

HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS HELP PATIENT S LIVE LIFE Have you ever questioned life without people.. Often when one is faced with a life limited circumstance their life becomes isolated Hospice volunteers provide companionship to people living with serious illness and aid their families by adding quality of life. Hospices rely on volunteers to help with office work, fundraising, community outreach and various other daily operational functions. CMS guidelines require hospices to recruit volunteers. We must have annual Volunteer hours

THE MAGNITUDE OF THE HOSPICE VOLUNTEER

WHAT IS YOUR METHODOLOGY

VALUABLE RECRUITMENT PROCESS ASSURES LONG-TERM COMMITMENT Four Key Components I. Great at networking because it defines you have a strong interest in people. A great Volunteer (Coordinator) recruiter has a need to be around and with people II. Exceptional influencing skills, ability to use social strategies (i.e. Facebook, emails, phone calls, civic groups) to channel marketing that will target volunteers for the core functions necessary in your hospice program. III. Personalizing and leveraging uniqueness, demonstrate what sets your program apart from other volunteer opportunities. (Why is hospice different; there is power and importance in personalization..rather than rely on a generic recruiting brand, as hospice professionals we must instead brand every volunteer job and staff discipline as unique. IV. Assure the volunteer that your program uses technology; yet is not consumed by it. Hospices are focused on getting results, but what is more important to you is that both the program and the volunteer is successful.

RETENTION IS WHAT RETENTION DOES Communication Collaboration Cohesiveness Compliment Competitive Edge Limited resources will require position prioritization Retention problems will increasingly impact recruiting so be creative Recognize it is not about compensation

THE ROLE OF VOLUNTEERS IS INVALUABLE The unselfish dedication of volunteers is essential to the important work provided by our nation s hospice programs.
