KPC Residence Life Monthly Report Month/Year: September 2015 Current Occupancy: 6 Resident Assistants (non-paying) 45 Students (Paying) 51 Total (52% Occupancy) Six students moved out of the residence hall since the hall opened in August. Of the six students, two left due to funding issues, one left due to personal reasons, one decided that she did not want to go to college, one decided to pursue his education via online courses and one left due to a job change. KPC Residence Life is gearing up to host an EXCEL (Excellence, Communications, Employability Skills) Mini-Bridging Camp the week of November 7, 2015. High school students from the Kuspuk and nearby school districts will participate in a 5 day camp where they engage in career and college exploration and readiness activities that will include participation in the Taste of College program. KPC will be hosting the members of the board of the Northwest Association of College and University Housing Officers (NWACUHO) in October. This meeting is a prelude to the upcoming NWACUHO conference that KPC is co-hosting with UAA and NWACUHO in February as well as the first step to securing a bid to host the conference on the Kenai Peninsula in 2020. Residence Life has also been in contact with four different groups seeking to schedule conferences at KPC this summer. They include BELL (Brown University Environmental Leadership Program), EXCEL, Girls Scouts and the Colorado Academy. Updates KPC Res Life is still taking orders for the KPC Res Life Hoodie designed by RA Amanda Dorough. Eric Brown, a member of our student maintenance crew, has started tutoring students in the Process Technology and Instrumentation program. Joseph Friday and William Kelly have joined the Res Life staff as student maintenance workers.
Jacob Farrar has volunteered to get the Residence Hall Association up and running. Summary of Activities Bulletin Board Themes: Hogwarts Guide to a Good Semester, Hello in 12 languages, Good roommate tips, basic healthy living tips, tips for studying to avoid academic emergencies. Weekly Programs: Late Night Advising: Chris Stuive meets with students in the residence hall one evening a week to offer advising and counseling. Geek Night: Geek game night has returned to Saturday evenings. Students gather and play games, socialize and have a good time. Thursday Evening Bible Study: Students gather on Thursday evening for a student lead Bible study. LGBTQ Alliance: The LGBTQ Alliance has resumed meeting every other Tuesday. Members of this group provide Safe Zone Training as well as promote a safe space for individuals of the LGBTQ community to socialize, learning about LGBTQ history and explore advocacy/awareness activities. Grocery Run every Wednesday/Friday: 2-3 students needed the run for the first 3 weeks of September. We switched it back to Fridays and 6 people attended. Anime Club: The Amine Club meets in the residence hall every Friday evening. Fantasy Football League: Skylar Taylor, RA, created a Res Life Fantasy Football League that currently consists of 15 different teams created and managed by students and staff who are all vying to win the Fantasy Football Super Bowl. Pigskin Pick ems: As a partner program to the Fantasy Football League, Skylar Taylor, RA, also hosts a weekly Pigskin Pick ems. Monthly Programs: Food Bank Run: The first Friday of each month, students have an opportunity to go to the food bank. First Friday Potluck: The first Friday of each month, Res Life hosts a potluck dinner in which students make a dish to share with the community. This month, the turnout was so large that Res Life almost ran out of seats at the big table.
September Programs: Minute to Win It: Amanda Dorough had a lot of active participation from the residents who engaged in a variety of competitive tasks and tests to prove who could do what in under a minute. The event was fun, engaging and provided for hours of laughs as students tried to transport skittles one at a time across the room, knock down cups with pantyhose and other fun things. Nerf Wars: Sean McBride hosted another installment of Nerf Wars. The battle lasted for three hours and while there was no obvious victor, it was clear that fun was had by all. Trivia: RA Taylor Evans brought a taste of Odie s trivia night into the residence with the hope of making it a monthly gathering. Drone Cookout: Hotdogs, BYOMeat, S mores, and Cotton Candy were served while Jesse Glaves from the Advancement office took some aerial footage with the advancement drone. Music Share: RA Kirsten McBride invited residents to share music interests, discussed different genres and explore possible new musical interests. Karate: RA Keeven Macik turned the MPR into a dojo and taught various techniques of Shorin- Ryu Karate. Wally Ball: RA Skylar Taylor took 19 residents to play wally ball for 2 hours on 2 courts at the Soldotna Sports Center. Food Fry: Residence from the Academic Excellence Community got together with RAs Sean McBride and Taylor Evans to test fry various items: Oreos, onions, and a variety of other items one would not typically think about frying. Pizza & Prometheus: RA Taylor Evans invited residents to watch the movie and eat pizza. Magic Tournament: RAs Skylar Taylor and Sean McBride took several residents to the Magic tournament at the Hobby shop from noon-6p. Skylar Taylor took third place. Movie Night: RA Amanda Dorough hosted a movie in the Bean Bag Theater (MPR). Faculty in Residence: Paul hosted 2-4 office hours per week in his apartment, speaking primarily with staff members. He attended three meetings of the Alliance LGBTQ group, showed one film in the lounge, attended two different RA programs, and he cooked for and attended the first Friday potluck.
He also had a discussion with a student about the possibility of them leaving the hall. He has two guest faculty dinners planned in the next two months. (Approximately 27 hours total.) First Friday Potluck
