Region9 Volleyball Report Report No. 1 Week Ending Sept. 11, 2011 Eastern Wyoming College The Eastern Wyoming Lancers started the season at the Subway Invite in North Platte. The Lancers topped Williston State, McCook and Southeast Nebraska. In the Williston win, Austin Daley had five kills while Dakota Clough had nine digs. In the wins against Mc- Cook and Southeast, Daley and Karsen Dingman each six and seven kills each. Clough also had a season high 19 digs against North Platte in a lose. The Lancers then picked up their game another notch in going 3-1 at the Colby Invite. The Lancers defeated Trinidad State in five sets as Clough finished with 44 digs. After that, they played the number one and two teams in the nation Western Nebraska and Western Wyoming tough, falling to WNCC in straight sets and losing to Western Wyoming in four sets. Central Wyoming College The Central Wyoming Rustlers, after starting the season at 3-0, fell to 3-4 after losing all four games at the Salt Lake Invite. The Rustlers played well last weekend in the losses, falling to Salt Lake C.C. in five sets after taking the first two games. In the contest, Leticia Guimareas paced the team with 14 kills and 10 kills. In matches to start the season, Central Wyoming s Courtney Patterson had a doubledouble in the win against Colorado Northwestern when she finished with 10 kills and 11 digs. After that, the Rustlers picked up steam by winning seven of their next eight, including topping Sheridan College in four sets behind 17 kills from Guimaraes. They also went to a tournament in Arizona and came away with a 6-1 record as Guimaraes was the key hitter as well as led the team in digs in five of the seven matches. Sheridan College The Sheridan Generals 8-1 on the season Around the Region Karson Dingman passes the ball to the frontline while making a nice save during the Eastern Wyoming College s match with Western Nebraska Community College on Sept. 6. The Lancers fell in three sets, 25-8, 25-21, 25-21. as they opened the 2011 campaign with eight straight wins before suffering their first defeat to Rocky Mountain junior varsity. The team has been led by the hitting of Andrea Hespen and Ashlei Lilli. Hespen had team-leading kills of 15 points against Dawson, 13 kills against Dakota Wesleyan junior varsity and 11 kills against Colorado Northwestern. Lilli had a 16-kill performance against Dakota Wesleyan junior varsity. Katy Siroky also led the team in kills against Williston State and Great Falls junior varsity. On the digging side, Shelby SMiley and Reyna Acosta have been leading the punch. Acosta had 25 digs against Colorado Northwestern and Smiley had a 29-kill performance against Great Falls junior varsity. North Platte Community College The North Platte volleyball team is 6-5 on the season as they have been up and down during the first two weeks of the season. The Knights are led on the outside by Whitney Smith and Jordan Dreher, Dreher had a teamhigh 14 kills against Dodge City as well as 11 kills each against Hastings College and Colby. The Knights then picked up a Nebraska Conference win over McCook behind Smith s eight kills before falling to Northeastern Colorado as Waite finished with a season-best 25 kills. Western Nebraska Community College The No. 1 ranked Cougars are a perfect 10-0 on the season and they have already defeated ranked foes College of Southern Idaho, Salt Lake, Jefferson College, Hillsborough CC, Iowa Lakes, and Missouri State-West Plains. In fact, the Cougars have dropped just two sets in their nine matches, one to Hillsborough and one to CSI. The Cougar women are led by Fernanda Goncalves, who is among the leaders in the nation in setting, and Debora Araujo, who is among the leaders in the country in hitting. The Cougars latest win was Tuessay night as they swept Casper College. Lamar Community College The Lamar Runnin Lopes won three straight and they did with a superb performance from sophomore Laiza Silva. Silva combined for 32 kills and 18 blocks to help them to wins against Air Force Prep, Colorado Northwestern and Colorado Christian J.V. Silva had 14 kills and eight blocks against Prep, seven kills and seven blocks against CNCC, and 11 kills and three blocks against Colorado Christian. Against Christian JV, Mele Samisoni, Heather Danny, and Yana Mitskevych each had three aces. Danny had four aces in the win against Air Force Prep. Trinidad State Junior College The Trojans, after falling four times at the Colby Invite, came back by taking three of four at the Otero Classic last weekend. The Trojans only defeat came to Air Force Prep. Trinidad defeated Colorado Christian, Garden City and Adams State junior varsity. Against Colorado Christian, Morgan Cahoy had 14 digs and Allison Rosas had eight kills. Against Garden City, Jacinta Hoffpauir had 14 kills and Rosas had 17 digs. In the match against Adams State, Alexis McAdams had eight kills and Capri Rino had 11 digs. Dawson Community College The Dawson Bucs are off to a 3-8 start having won two of their last three games. Dawson defeated University of Great Falls junior varsity as Shelby Jessiman and Sara Williamson each had 12 kills and Desiree Schauman ahd 17 digs. In the win against Dakota College, Natasha Mathis had 12 kills. The team then lost a contest to Northwest College as Lindsey Western Nebraska Community College s Lais Soares (10) and Megan Johnson (15) go up for a block in the Cougar s home match against Eastern Wyoing College on Sept. 6. The Cougars are 10-0 on the season and ranked No. in the nation. James had 10 kills and Schauman had 12 digs. Western Wyoming Community College The Mustangs, who are ranked No. 2 in the latest NJCAA national poll, are a perfect 11-0 on the season having dropped just four sets so far this season. The Mustangs defeated ranked Snow College twice, No. 17 North Idaho twice, and also No. 10 Eastern Arizona College. Leading the way for the Mustangs is Olivera Medic as she has pounded home a season-high 16 kills in a win against Snow College. Medic also had a double-double in that contest, collecting 14 digs. Medic also had two other double-doubles, getting 13 kills and 13 digs against North Idaho, and also had 14 kills and 11 digs in a second meeting against North Idaho on Sept. 2. Western Wyoming dropped games to four opponents -- Snow College twice, North Idaho, and Eastern Wyoming College. Central Community College-Columbus The Central Raiders picked up five more wins last week as they beat Southeast Nebraska twice, and then disposed of Concordia J.V., Marshalltown and McCook. Against Southeast in the four-set win, Maggie Hellbrusch finished with 20 kills while Andrea Odbert had 19 digs. Casper College Casper went to 3-7 on the season with two Wyoming Conference and North Sub-region wins against Eastern Wyoming and Laramie County last week. The T-Birds defeated LCCC in four sets as Savannah Donarski and Stanka Panic each had 14 kills, and Jessica Reble had 23 digs. The team then traveled to Eastern Wyoming and won in four sets behind Panic with a sensational 24 kills, while Reble had 24 digs. Southeast Community College The Southeast Storm volleyball team dropped five matches last week, falling to Division II ranked Central-Columbus twice and also Division I ranked Iowa Western C.C. The first encounter with Central-Columbus, Bailie Muller finished with 12 kills and Hillary Kostal had 14 digs. Katey Pflanz also has six service points. In the second meeting, a fourset loss, Muller pounded home 18 kills, while Glathar had 12 digs. Taylor Aegerter finisihed with 19 service points. Northwest College The Northwest Trappers are 5-7 on the season as they won two of three last weekend. Continued on next page

In earlier games this season, the Trappers went 2-2 in the prestigious CSI tournament, beating No. 17 North Idaho in five sets and then beating USU-College of Eastern Utah in five sets. Katie Burnett has been standing out at the libero position as she recorded 33 digs against College of Eastern Utah and 31 against North Idaho. She also had 26 in a loss to Southern Idaho. Otero Junior College The Otero Rattlers went 5-0 last week as they picked up wins against Colorado Northwestern, Air Force Prep, Clarendon College, Adams State J.V., and Garden City Community College. In one of the best contests of the week against Air Force Prep, Camille Kovach finished with 19 kills and Maureen Naqica had 20 digs in the four set win. Naqica also had 19 digs in the Clarendon win as well as 16 digs in the Colorado Northwestern win. Around the Region
