2 During dinner we had the additional pleasure to have Kathryn E. Jeffery, president of Sacramento City College, join us for a brief speech on the value behind honor societies such as Phi Theta Kappa. The night concluded with the first round of Breakout Sessions and some tired students finally hitting the sack after a long day of traveling. Day 2 began as a quaint Sacramento morning, despite the abundant buzz and excitement filling the entire hotel. The third General Session included the first ever Interactive Meeting and Greeting with the New Mexico Region (who was also having their conference). Jennifer Stanford, Chief Student Engagement Officer, and Fredrica Packnett, Key Services Consultant Division IV, joined us from Headquarters and provided all with an engaging speech on how we define a leader. The last two Breakout Session and lunch ensued afterward. The afternoon's activities included a Fish Bowl session with the officer team, a Hallmark Award winners Q&A, and final announcements. Once the evening arrived, that things got real fun, real fast! Many members got dressed in their Roaring 20s outfits and the final General Session was filled with excitement for the upcoming speaker and magician. Dr. Dale Salwak was nothing less than an incredible, charismatic, and knowledgeable speaker. He charmed his audience with his thoughts on solitude and how that loneliness produces the finest leaders. The very same Dr. Salwak later returned to stage to perform a magic show that dazzled the entire NV/CA region, an incredible way to end the 2015 Fall Leadership Conference. But the night was far from over Not a half hour after concluding the last General Session, some of our members who had stayed behind were invited to a wedding celebration next door. Needless to say our Phi Theta Kappa members represented us all marvelously; with an arsenal of sleek dance moves and energy that lasted the entire night!
Greetings Fellow Members! A Message from our Board Member: My name is Christine Amezcua, a 29 year old student with aspirations to fulfill a career as an author and professor. I've chosen to major in Child Development, and plan to attend a fouryear university to further continue with my educational pursuits. My goals include earning a Bachelor's and Master's degree so I can share knowledge in the field of Psychology, write children's books as well as novels for adults to enjoy. Elected to the NV/CA Regional Board as your Southeast District Vice President, I'm deeply honored to be a part of this outstanding team. I first joined Phi Theta Kappa upon invitation in October of 2014 as I had a desire to serve a much greater purpose within my college experience. In that following December, I provided my assistance at the Veterans Home located in Chula Vista, California along with a group of volunteers, including some fellow members of the Alpha Pi Epsilon Chapter at Southwestern College. This past March, I also participated in our chapter's Annual Car Show, a fundraising event that was truly a great success. Last April, I had the privilege of attending NerdNation the Honor Society's International Convention in San Antonio, Texas which was an incredibly amazing event! I gained leadership experience from Southwestern College's campus activities and fundraising events before the previous school session ended. Phi Theta Kappa offers many wonderful opportunities for students to become actively involved. Skills that I've acquired throughout my journey will continuously be utilized as I partake in additional responsibilities. Thus far, I've collaborated with our Regional Officer team and other groups in the region and beyond, implementing ideas for projects and events. As a regional officer, I'm also given the opportunity to challenge myself in public speaking, time management, and being diligent in order to accomplish numerous tasks that have been assigned. I hope to inspire many individuals as we focus on our academic studies and reach our full potential to achieve all of our goals. Sincerely, Christine A. Amezcua Christine A. A Message from the President Hello Nevada / California Region and Happy Halloween! In my first greeting to the Nevada / California region, I promised that one of my primary goals as your Regional President was that our officer team and I contact and maintain communication with all 91 chapters within our great region. We are well on our way toward meeting our goals! Our team's participation at the International Convention and my participation at the Honors Institute, the Colorado Region's Honors in Action Boot Camp in June, and their Fall Honors in Action Conference in September has prepared our team to share the latest in Phi Theta Kappa's numerous programs and opportunities at our District Summits and Fall Leadership Conference. Daniele, Christel, Tatiana, Nicole, Chrissy, and I have also listened to you. Through our unprecedented "NV/CA on the Road" trip through Nevada this summer, and our conference calls including "Creating Strong HiA Projects for Smaller Chapters" and "Outreach to Chapter Presidents," we met many of you in person and over the phone. Hearing your concerns enabled our team and Headquarters representatives to better understand what you need to lead your chapter, increase membership, and improve your personal leadership skills. Thank you for sharing your needs with us; and we will continue to do our best to respond to them. I am eager to see you as am back on the road visiting your chapter for an informal visit, induction ceremonies, or presenting at a District Summit. Have a great autumn and I look forward to staying in touch. Yours in service, Kristine kristine.lowe.ptk@gmail.com 4
