Prepare the Way of the Lord! Advent Evening Prayer (Vespers) in Church Tuesday, December 13 at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 20 at 6:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to join with the St. Aloysius community in praying the daily Liturgy of the Church, also known as the Liturgy of the Hours or the Divine Office. We praise the Father for the gift of light, Jesus Christ, who is the light of the world. This brief liturgy (approximately 30 minutes) features psalms, hymns, scripture and intercessory prayer. This is a prayerful and peaceful way to observe the season of Advent. Retirement Fund for the Religious Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have offered their lives in service to others educating the young, comforting the sick, seeking justice for the oppressed. Often these jobs paid little and left religious communities retirement plans grossly underfunded. Today, many religious are frail, elderly, and in need of assistance. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to furnish medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Please give generously in today s second collection to the Retirement Fund for the Religious. December 11, 2016 3rd Sunday of Advent

December 10-11, 2016 Our Challenge Dear friends, Isaiah understood that God is present in our darkest hours. The splendor of our God is never brighter than when we meet him in some parched land or when we find him in some human tragedy. The transformation of human history will not happen overnight. However, the seed of righteousness has been planted and the harvest will come. Like the farmer, we must be patient until the earth brings forth the promised Kingdom of our God. Although we await the final deliverance of God, we are not without signs that the Redeemer has come. The sick of heart are healed. The weak of hope are raised to life. The poor of spirit are restored to joy. There are turning points in life that change everything. Such turning points are not always obvious at the time. The coming of Christ was a major turning point in human history. Even though the world may seem little changed, the world s Redeemer has come and dwelt among us. The transforming power of God is still at work in human history. For this we give thanks! The world may seem like anything but God s world. Still, there are men and women all around us who are doing God s redemptive work. Seeing is believing, is a simple and well-known saying. Spiritual insight or vision is just as important in the realm of faith. The eyes of faith can see the power of God in the darkest night. The eyes of hope can see the deliverance of God in the blackest day. The eyes of love can see the presence of God in the loneliest hour. We live in a world that is being redeemed by God and by the people of God! Have a good week! Love and prayers, Father Randy CHRISTMAS FLOWERS Christmas is just around the corner and flowers will gracefully decorate our church and help bring us into the joyful spirit of Christ s birth. EDUCATION Stewardship of Prayer May Our Prayer Lead us to Faith in Action! Blessing Prayer for Your Nativity Scene The custom of displaying figures depicting the birth of Jesus Christ owes its origin to Saint Francis of Assisi who made the Christmas crèche or manger near the town of Grecio, Italy for Christmas eve in the year 1223. However, as early as the fourth century representations of the nativity of the Lord were painted as wall decorations depicting not only the infancy narrative accounts of Christ s birth, but also the words of the prophets Isaiah and Habakkuk taken to mean that the Messiah would be born in the midst of animals in a manger. Nativity Blessing Prayer: God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation you have made manifest your love: when our need for a Savior was great you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love. Lord, bless all who look upon this manger; may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise up our thoughts to him, who is God-with-us and Savior of all, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
