Asia Pacific is a major hub of traditional or indigenous knowledge on herbal medicine Some researches on herbal medicine became bases of drug formulations now in the market 2

Why a Regional Database? There are common plants being studied by researchers in APEC economies However, only few plants had been studied and documented Why a Regional Database? Existing databases are at different levels of development: content, searchability and language 3

Objectives of the Regional Database To set-up an information resource from peer-reviewed sources to aid researchers and potential investors in drug discovery and development Objectives of the Regional Database To establish standards in documenting information on herbal medicine To agree on minimum data elements that each economy shares with the Regional Database 4

Objectives of the Regional Database To provide information on opportunities for possible researcher-researcher and/or research industry partnership Alignment with APEC Priorities 22 nd APEC Economic Leaders Declaration (Innovative Growth) foster partnership in science, technology and innovation (STI) strengthen collaboration among government, academia and private sector 5

Support PPSTI Goals Common approaches to STI policies that promote the development, dissemination and commercialization of innovative technologies Support PPSTI Goals Strengthen cooperative projects and programs Complement and strengthen existing STI-related work e.g ASEAN Network for Drugs, Diagnostics, Vaccines and Traditional Medicine Innovation 6

Proposed Policy Statements The establishment of the regional database on herbal medicine eliminates barriers to access to information of quality and integrity. The use of information on herbal medicine has potentials for developing affordable, safe and effective drugs and other health products.
