Styrian Contribution in Austria - Indicators for the future Styria is exceptionally well positioned by regarding important innovationoriented indicators for the future (population as benchmark)

Overview of the Styrian company - landscape Total number of Styrian firms: 55.000 (employer firms: >33.000) including 30.000 sole traders (55% of Chamber of Commerce members) 200 leading companies or large industrial companies (operating internationally) with appr. 60.000 employees. 75% out of them are employed in companies of up to 500 employees. From 2009 to 2018 about 7.000 companies (with up to 62.000 employees) will form the next generation (business succession) Start-ups in 2011: 4.665 new start-ups in the region of Styria Identification of specific drivers for innovation and growth: Approximately 2.200 companies (generating 120.000 jobs) contain potentials for growth and innovation. They are representing the primary target of the regional economic policy

Economic strategy Styria 2020 forms a medium and long term framework for the active economic and regional policy. is the basis for business development programmes and measures. is flexible enough to adapt to new conditions. however, in its implementation also depends on the available budgets.

The Strategic Objectives In order to achieve Growth through Innovation the following strategic goals have been defined: 1. To orient the location Styria to three sustainable topics with innovation and growth potential: Mobility, Eco-Tech and Health-Tech 2. To increase the number of innovative Styrian companies and to expand the focus by the sector of services 3. To create very good general conditions for young companies and company foundations with growth potential 4. To prepare the companies and the location for the demographic developments and to implement new qualification measures for key and skilled employees 5. To further internationalise the companies and the location Styria. 6. To orient funding and financing offers on the companies' growth phase and on the future investments (getting a holistic view!)

The 5 core strategies

Core strategy 1: Location development and location management The Styrian regional economic portfolio is an interplay and a co-operation between 1. market-oriented key themes, Mobility Eco-Tech and Health-Tech 2. technological core-competences and site advantages (e.g. mechanical engineering, electronics, instrumentation and control technology) and the 2. academic scientific disciplines

Core strategy 2: Funding of innovation and R&D For a broader penetration of innovation The broadening of the innovation base in the region still remains a permanent objective for the regional economic policy Creating easy accessible funding possibilities for R&D innovation newcomers Expanding the range of innovation services Highly innovative projects of business development Promoting highly innovative R&D projects Fostering and concentrating on the transition of R&D Know-how to production and services Expansion of focus to innovative service providers Also for regional local supply (innovative models) Innovation services through business development Introducing, supporting and and guiding companies to federal and EU programmes

Core strategy 3: Entrepreneurship & growth of young companies Strengthening of young knowledge-intensive companies with growth potential Accompanying funding and financing measures for the mobilisation of private equity capital Creation of good infrastructural framework conditions for innovation, knowledge-and technology-oriented start-ups and young enterprises. Entrepreneurship and foundation promotion Partner of the "Gründerland" Styria commercial foundations, sole proprietor businesses Business and Companies' Succession Support of companies during the critical phase of company succession (next generation) and for the regional safeguarding of the continuance of companies

Core strategy 4: Qualification, Training & HR potential Company-related funding Strategically applied qualifications in companies and simple programmes for small enterprises and sole proprietor businesses To promote the management of human resources potential in the companies (especially in the direction demography, migration background etc.) Location development for human resources potentials Support of new approaches of specialist/apprentice training Promotion of recruits in natural-science and technical educations Fostering and supporting key and skilled employees at the site

Core strategy 5: Internationalisation of companies and location Advertising and professional marketing for the location "Marketing" of the location Styria through a clear, authentic and easily communicable profile Strengthening of companies' export capacity of business Own export promotion in niches or as supplement to the federal programmes Consideration of a requirement of training and qualification measures such as for the intercultural management, the number of export merchants etc. Styria and the Eastern and South-eastern European countries Use of transnational programmes, orientation to the collaboration in the areas of infrastructure, education, research and development
