May 1, 2007 To all members of the All United States Kendo Federation (AUSKF) The Omaha Kendo and Iaido Kyokai are very pleased to host the AUSKF 2007 Iaido Camp from Thursday, July 26, 2007 to Sunday, July 29, 2007 at the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Enclosed please find a packet of information and registration sheets, all of which should be distributed to all interested individuals. This same information is also available via the AUSKF web site listed below. All participants are strongly encouraged to register early in order to avoid late charges and limited space after July 1, 2007. All forms and payments delineated within the packet must be received to the camp mailing address below by July 12, 2007 as no late applications will be accepted nor refunds provided after this date. Candidates seeking the ranks of 6 Dan and below are eligible to test but must have written permission from their instructor and the president of their regional Kendo Federation. Registrants are responsible for their own ground transportation. Taxi s are available at the airport and the fare is to the hotel is approximately $25.00. The hotel does not provide shuttle service from the airport. We need to know if you will have your own transportation from the hotel to the venue or will be looking for transportation. If enough people need transportation to and from the venue, we will provide school bus transportation for a nominal fee. Please provide this information when sending in your registration packet. AUSKF 2007 NATIONAL IAIDO TAIKAI (TOURNAMENT) All ZenKenRen iaido kata will be pre-selected by the instructors and posted on the day of the taikai. Koryu kata will be chosen by each contestant (Nakanishi Cup contestants only). Time limit: Six minutes per competitor, all divisions. All matches are determined by hantei (judges decision). 1st place, 2nd place, two 3rd place and Kantosho (Fighting Spirit) awards will be handed out for each division. All decisions of the referees and judges are final. Participants must have a nafuda (name tag) for their uniform. Mudansha Cup No rank to 1 kyu may enter Each contestant performs five kata from ZenKenRen iaido Yamaguchi Cup 1 dan to 2 dan may enter Each contestant performs five kata from ZenKenRen iaido Nakanishi Cup 3 dan and above may enter Each contestant performs two kata from their individual koryu (style) plus three kata from ZenKenRen iaido Shinkyu Shinsa (Promotional Examination) Shinsa candidates must complete or provide ALL of the following prior to the examination: AUSKF membership or membership of another kendo federation recognized by IKF. Completed shinsa application form. Signed waiver of liability form. Permission from their instructor. Permission from their regional kendo federation president. A copy of their current menjo (rank certificate). Written test answer(s). Shinsa and menjo fees (must be two separate checks; there will be no refund if there is only one check covering both fees and the shinsa is not passed). Candidates may apply to test for 6th dan and below. Any shinsa application forms or payments submitted after July 12 2007 will NOT be accepted. New menjo will be mailed to each successful candidate s instructor following the completion of the shinsa. All decisions of the examining board are final. 3

AUSKF 2007 CAMP FEE SCHEDULE 2-day seminar and 1-day taikai: $140.00, AUSKF members (non-auskf add $40.00) A $35.00 late fee will be added to seminar, taikai and shinsa fees for applications received after July 1, 2007. Please answer the by writing (clearly/legibly) in either English or Japanese. You may use the backside of this paper or a separate sheet. If using a separate sheet please insure the information above is on your answer sheet. First Kyu candidates: 1: Name, and briefly describe, the five basic on-guard postures (kamae) used in swordsmanship. 2: What is the purpose of chiburi? 3: List the names of all 12 All Japan Kendo Federation Iaido katas. Shodan candidates: 1: Explain what is meant by the term saya-biki. Describe its use in one All Japan Kendo Federation Iaido kata. 2: Draw a simple diagram of a katana, label as many parts as you can. 3: Tsuki (thrusts) occur in five of the All Japan Kendo Federation Iaido kata. Name these kata, and identify their target areas. Nidan candidates: 1: Discuss the concept of zanshin. Describe its use in at least one All Japan Kendo Federation kata. 2: Explain the proper way of gripping the katana when cutting. 3: Describe the action of furikaburi in All Japan Kendo Federation kata Ipponme (Mae). Sandan candidates: 1: What is kirioroshi? Describe its use in one All Japan Kendo Federation Iaido kata. 2: Describe how to clean a sword (shinken and/or iaito). 3: How should the left hand function while drawing the sword? Yondan candidates: 1: Write what you know about kokyu (breath control) in Iaido. 2: What is meant by jo-ha-kyu? Describe its application in one All Japan Kendo Federation Iaido kata. 3: Is it important, or is it not important to participate in Iaido Competitions? Explain your rationale. Godan candidates: 1: Discuss reiho: What does the word mean, why is it important in the dojo? 2: Discuss metsuke. 3: Name the 2 sitting postures used in Iaido. Describe how to sit in each, and how to get up. Rokudan 1: What is kigurai? 2: What are ma and maai? Describe their application in one or two All Japan Kendo Federation Iaido kata. 3: What is important when teaching Iaido to beginners? 7

AUSKF 2007 IAIDO CAMP WAIVER OF LIABILITY All seminar, taikai and shinsa participants MUST read and sign the following and submit this form with all other application forms: I, the undersigned, do hereby voluntarily submit my application for participation and attendance in the AUSKF 2007 Iaido Camp, and hereby release all rights or claims for any injuries, loss of, or damage to personal property that I may incur while attending and participating in the aforementioned event. I hereby waive any and all claims against the All United States Kendo Federation (AUSKF), Iowa School for the Deaf, the Southwest Kendo and Iaido Federation (SWKIF), Omaha Kendo and Iaido Kyokai or any officials, agents, representatives, successors, and assignees of those individuals or organizations arranging or conducting said event. I further state that I am in good health and physical condition so that I may participate in said event. If I am less than 18 years of age, this release and consent must also be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
