Residential Life and Expectatins The drmitry buildings are year-rund hmes t faculty and their families and becme a hme away frm hme fr barding students while schl is in sessin. In rder t ensure that drmitries are welcming, cmfrtable, and safe envirnments in which t live and study, all residents and visitrs t drms are expected t treat all buildings, furnishings, and inhabitants with care and respect. Cncern fr the safety and wellbeing f drmitry residents and fr the preservatin f an academic envirnment is central in all f the sectins belw. Schl Week Rules and Expectatins Check-In Each evening, resident students must check in at dinner between 5:45 pm and 6:45 pm. This ccurs at the duty table in the dining hall, where faculty members check students ff a rster. This ensures face-t-face cntact with each student at dinner each evening. On weekdays, faculty and prefects will als check in with students during study hall between 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm, ften having lnger cnversatins abut the day. After study hall, the next check-in will ccur at 10:30 pm, when prefects and faculty ensure that all 9th graders are in their individual rms fr lights ut and that all 10th, 11th and 12th graders are back in their wn drms. Study Hall Stevensn Schl is first and fremst an academic institutin and, as such, requires times when ptimum cnditins fr studying must be maintained. Study Hall is required f all resident students every evening Sunday thrugh Thursday frm 7:30 pm t 9:30 pm. The fllwing is a breakdwn f this perid: 7:30 pm All students place cell phnes (turned ff) utside f their rms. 7:30-8:50 pm Individual study 9th and 10th grade students may use the first ten minutes f study hall t check assignments and plan study time n their laptps. At 7:40 pm, they must place laptps utside f their rms. Frm 7:40-8:50 pm, they must ask permissin frm a drm parent t use their laptps. 11th and 12th grade students have access t laptps thrughut study hall. 8:50-9:30 pm Cllabrative study 9th and 10th grade students may study in cmmn rms. 11th and 12 grade students may study in cmmn rms r drm rms. During the fall term, all freshmen participate in the Freshmen Study Hall Prgram and attend study hall in the cafeteria frm 7:30-9:30 pm. Resident students may nt have music n during study hall, except if they use headphnes. Persnal phne calls cannt be made r received during study hurs. Library Study Hall The library is the site f an evening prctred study hall frm 7:30 pm until 8:50 pm. At each grading perid, resident students with tw r mre grades f C- r belw and/r a cre GPA r 2.5 r less are assigned t this study hall, where they will receive mre individualized attentin. The study hall is prctred by a faculty member. Quiet Time Music may nt be played except with headphnes after the end f Study Hall at 9:30 pm. This is quiet time, when students may cntinue t study, quietly scialize within designated campus buildings, r g t sleep. Thrughut the day, music shuld never be audible utside f student rms. Lights Out Lights ut means that music and cmputers must be ff, that phnes ideally are pwered ff r placed n desks, and that students must be in bed; it is nt the time t start getting ready fr bed. At 11:00 pm each weekday, a faculty member will make sure that each student is in his r her rm, and fr 9th, 10th, and 11th graders, that they are nt using phnes r cmputers and that lights are turned ut fr the night. 12th graders d nt have a lightsut time and are expected t mnitr their wn sleep. At this pint, the drm has been lcked and all students are required t stay in their rms fr the night. Late lights are generally nt granted n Sunday night. Late lights may als be requested n a weekend night t finish watching a mvie, etc. Drmitry/Rm Visitatins Between final check-in time and 6 am, Stevensn requires students t remain in their drmitries unless permissin t leave has been given by a Resident Faculty Member r the Drm Head. Fr security purpses, day students are nt allwed in the residence halls during the academic day. They may visit between 3:00 pm and 7:30 pm if they are invited and accmpanied by a resident student. They are als permitted in drmitries fr the V3 Rev 9/19/2017 2

cllabrative study perid that begins at 8:50 pm Bys and girls may nt visit drmitry areas f the ppsite sex at any time. Vilatin f this restrictin cnstitutes a serius disciplinary infractin and may cst a student his r her place in the schl. The Hills Cmmn Rm in Wilsn Hall, the Bechtel Family Cmmn Rm in Silverad Hall, Day Hall Cmmns, Barrws Hall Cmmns, and the Atwd Family Residence Cmmns are all pen t bth bys and girls. Rm Inspectin On Mnday thrugh Thursday, all resident students must pass rm inspectin. This basic rm inspectin requires all students t have their bed made, desks cleared and flr picked up. The purpse f this rm inspectin is t ensure students have a rm that is cnducive t studying. Sign-ut Prcedures During schl hurs, all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders are expected t stay n campus unless they have a scheduled appintment. Hwever, when they d leave campus, they are expected t sign ut in the Dean f Students ffice. 12th graders have the ptin t leave campus during a free perid. T d s, they must sign ut in the Dean f Student s Office. Whenever a resident student leaves campus (including fr mandatry schl events), he/she is expected t sign ut n the drm sign-ut sheet, detailing where he/she is ging specifically and hw he/she is getting there. When students return frm being ff campus, they must sign in immediately. Sign-ut sheets are psted in drm cmmn rms. If a senir resident prefect is driving him/herself, he/she must ask permissin frm the Dean f Students, Assciate Dean f Students, the Directr f Residence r Drm Head t use his/her car during the week. During the schl day, he/she is t sign ut at the Dean f Student s ffice. During the evening, he/she must ask permissin f the Duty Head and may sign ut in his/her drm. Frmal Dinner Each Mnday, the entire Stevensn resident cmmunity gathers fr a frmal sit-dwn dinner in the dining hall. Dinner begins prmptly at 6:15 pm (5:45 pm during Winter Term) with a nn-denminatinal prayer. Annuncements made befre and after dinner are led by the senir emcees, wh are selected by the senir class. Because Mnday Night Dinner is a special ccasin, students are asked t wear frmal attire. A sprt cat, tie, dress shirt, nice slacks, belt, and nn-athletic scks are required dress fr bys. Frmal dresses, skirts, nice slacks, bluses, and dress shes are required fr girls. Shulders must be cvered and hemlines shuld be fingertip-length r lnger. N denim is permitted fr bys r girls. Culturally apprpriate frmal wear (e.g., a kimn) is als permissible with the apprval f the Directr f Residence r Assciate Dean f Students. During the frmal dinner, students are assigned t a table with a resident faculty member r family. Each mnth, Mnday Night Dinner tables are reassigned t prvide students an pprtunity t cnnect with multiple resident faculty members. All resident students are expected t attend Mnday Night dinner unless excused by the Health Center r the Directr f Residence. Apprximately nce mnthly, Mnday Night Dinner is fllwed by Vespers. Vespers takes place in the chapel and is a time fr a faculty member, senir, r a guest t share his/her perspective and insights with the rest f the cmmunity. V3 Rev 9/19/2017 3

Weekend Expectatins and Rules Check In / Face-t-Face / Lights Out On Friday and Saturday, there is n mandatry study hall fr all students. Students check in at dinner between 5:45 pm and 6:45 pm and then again at their specific checkin time. On Friday and Saturday, all students are required t d a face-t-face (shrt cnversatin with the faculty member n duty) check-in befre they g t bed. Friday and Saturday dinner check-in is nt required fr senirs. Any sign ut ff f the Peninsula requires direct permissin frm a resident faculty member, wh will need a cmmunicatin frm a parent. If a senir resident prefect is driving him/herself, he/she must ask permissin frm the Duty Head r the persn n duty in his r her wn drm. During the weekend, he/she must ask permissin f the Duty Head and may sign ut in his/her drm. When a student leaves n pass fr the weekend, he r she is assumed t be under the respnsibility f his/her hst; therefre he/she n lnger needs t sign ut in the drm. Saturday Rm Inspectin On Saturday mrning, all students are expected t pass a mre thrugh rm inspectin. During this rm inspectin, faculty n duty will check t make sure that beds are made, trash is emptied, clthes are picked up, flr is vacuumed, and all drawers are rganized. If a student leaves campus fr the weekend (ges n pass) his/her rm must be cleaned prir t departure. Overnight Visitrs Resident students are welcme t have a high-schl aged visitr, including day students, spend ne night n campus during the weekend. T arrange this, they must speak t the Directr f Residence by Thursday f the week prir t the visit. The visitr must als have a parent call r email the Directr f Residence giving him/her permissin t spend the night n campus. The visitr is expected t be with a Stevensn hst during the entire duratin f his/her visit. The visitr is als expected t abide by all resident students rules including all check-ins, sign-uts and lights-ut. All visitrs (regardless f if they are sleeping n campus) shuld check in with faculty n duty befre spending time in the drms. Behaviral Expectatins While Away frm Campus All students, barding and day, are expected t behave in a manner that des nt cmprmise the gd name f Stevensn Schl, and t fllw schl rules while n r ff campus. When n schl-spnsred trips and representing Stevensn, students are V3 Rev 9/19/2017 4

expected t be n their best behavir. If a student breaks any schl rule while n a schlspnsred trip, he r she shuld expect a disciplinary respnse. Other Rules and Expectatins Drmitries and Privacy All members f the cmmunity shuld respect the privacy and prperty f thers and share in the creatin f an envirnment that prtects the physical and emtinal wellbeing f each resident f the drmitry. Because the Drm Head is respnsible fr the drmitry and its residents, the Resident Faculty and the Drm Heads must have immediate access t any rm upn kncking and may cnfiscate any items nt permitted in a drmitry. When necessary, they may use a key card t enter a rm whether a student is present r nt. Fd Delivery All students may rder fd AFTER study hall, between the hurs f 9:30 pm and 10:30 pm, Sunday thrugh Thursday nights. Friday and Saturday nights students may rder fd fr delivery until 11:00 pm. Delivery persnnel are nt allwed in the drm and shuld be directed t the frnt f Duglas Hall fr delivery pick up. Cars Stevensn ffers a bus system t many areas n the Mnterey Peninsula and Salinas, and we encurage students t use the bus. Resident students (ther than senir prefects) are nt allwed t have cars n campus r anywhere n the Mnterey Peninsula, nr may they drive anther persn s car. Resident students may drive their parents car if their parents are visiting the area, with the parents knwledge and permissin, but this des nt apply t the cars f any ther visiting relatives, siblings, r friends, even if they live n the Mnterey Peninsula. Resident students wh have prperly signed ut may ride with their wn family members, ther Stevensn parents r Stevensn faculty withut special permissin. Resident students wh have parental permissin n file with the Dean f Students Office may ride in the cars f student drivers during nrmal sign-ut hurs, but nly n the Mnterey Peninsula. Rides ff the Mnterey Peninsula under any ther circumstances require specific Resident Faculty permissin. Further, specific infrmatin is available n the website at www.stevensnschl.rg/upper/culture. Fire Regulatins Life in a densely ppulated residential cmmunity leads t safety risks fr all students and faculty. In the histry f the schl, three majr fires have affected campus life: the fire in Duglas Hall in the early days f the schl, the Pebble Beach Frest Fire f 1987 and the lss f the President s residence in 2007. Students are expected t strictly adhere t the schl s fire regulatins. They include: Treating any fire alarm as a serius situatin, knwing evacuatin rutes and meeting places fr drmitries and classrm buildings Decrating drmitry rms in a fire-safe manner and preventing false alarms, including but nt limited t: Maintaining a direct path frm the rm dr t the students bed and windw N hanging curtains, tapestries r ceiling decratins N hliday lighting n a year-rund basis N heaters, immersin bilers, ht plates, ht pts r cffee makers V3 Rev 9/19/2017 5

N irns, hair straighteners r curling irns except in drm bathrms r laundry rms N aersl air fresheners N halgen lamps N smking N candles N matches N lighters Fire safety prcedures will be reviewed at the beginning f each year, and fire drills will ccur peridically. Bicycles, Skatebards, In-line Skates, and Scters Students using skatebards, in-line skates, and scters are nt allwed in Rsen Amphitheater r the surrunding area. Students are required t stay n defined campus paths and radways and are required t wear prtective headgear. N skatebards, skates r scters may be used in any Stevensn buildings, r n any steps r railings. Linen and Laundry Each drmitry has washers and dryers. What t bring fr laundry: 1-2 laundry bags Laundry detergent Dryer sheets (if desired) Students will need t prvide and launder their wn linens. A mattress pad is prvided by the schl. Health Center The health f the student bdy is in the capable hands f the nurses in the Student Health Center. The center is staffed with an evening and day registered nurse wh wrk clsely with area physicians and health centers. The fcus f the Student Health Center is wellness; that is, they wrk with advisrs and drm parents t help prevent illnesses befre they ccur.
