TECHNICAL COLLEGE OF THE ROCKIES Where Careers Begin POLICE ACADEMY PROGRAM STUDENT ADMISSION ADVISORY FOR ENTRY INTO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAM If you qualify for grants, loans, or military benefits, you must enroll in a course of training consisting of 600 or more hours and at least one semester in length. The Police Academy meets these requirements. In order to be accepted into the Certified Peace Officer Academy, it is now a requirement by Statute that the applicant be fingerprinted and an arrest record evaluated. Any conviction for a felony crime or any misdemeanor crime as per the attached list, or a dishonorable discharge from the armed services will prevent you from being accepted. If you have such record, we suggest you discuss the implications with the Academy Director. In addition Federal Law prohibits anyone convicted of a crime of Domestic Violence from carrying a firearm. The Academy will also require you to furnish proof of a valid Colorado Operator s License. A poor driving record, habitual violations, D.U.I., Revocations and Suspensions may also prevent you from being accepted into training and may affect your success in obtaining a law enforcement position. Additional background information may also impact your success in obtaining a law enforcement position. These considerations include: financial history, drug involvement, unreported crimes, and body modification. If you have any concerns about these areas we suggest you discuss the implications with the Academy Director. If you have any known medical or psychological problems, you should determine if these can be corrected prior to starting. The Police Academy s Training is designed to educate and train entry level patrol officers. Students must meet the mental and physical requirements which are normal for departmental standards and job performance levels. Applicants will be tested at the College on Basic Skills prior to acceptance into the course(s). If you have an average of 11-12 grade levels you would be at an educational level which would make you more competitive in the training and job market. If your averages are below this norm, we suggest you take advantage of our remedial section and upgrade these skills prior to entry into the training or educational program. The Criminal Justice Program schedule may differ from TCR s schedule. Classes meet Monday through Friday from 0600 to 1600 or 1700. Students are required to participate in physical fitness training at 0600, no exceptions. Exam days are late days and may go beyond 1700. Occasional weekend and night training may be required. NOTICE: Students who are accepted into the training programs will be subjected to academy rules. The student will be required to strictly adhere to these rules during the training. These consist of strict attendance and grade requirements, cadet uniform dress codes, rules of conduct, off campus conduct and adherence to safety requirements. During orientation, prior to testing and registration, the student will be asked to agree to compliance. The student will also have an opportunity to discuss these rules and regulations governing employees conduct. Those who feel they cannot meet these standards will not be accepted. I have read and understand the above information. Further, I swear to the truth of all information and statements contained in any and all waivers, information and applications. TECHNICAL COLLEGE OF THE ROCKIES Where Careers Begin INFORMATION RELATIVE TO EMPLOYMENT: POLICE ACADEMY STUDENT EMPLOYMENT ADVISORY In most areas of Criminal Justice, the applicant for hiring will be required to meet the following criteria. Procedures and testing does vary and can be more or less than the standard. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older. Applicant may not have a felony conviction or certain misdemeanor convictions. (See attached forms) (P.O.S.T. cannot certify a person with record of this nature) A department will also examine the applicant s driving record. Federal Law prohibits anyone convicted of a crime of domestic violence from carrying a firearm. Applicant may be required to submit to a polygraph examination in order to confirm statements on their application, unreported criminal activity, drugs and alcohol abuse or involvement. Other areas of consideration for hiring include: financial history and body modifications. Hiring agencies will require the applicant to take a written examination; some require a physical agility evaluation, oral board interview, a background investigation, and a medical and psychological examination by licensed practitioners prior to state certification as peace officers. Prior to State Certification as Peace Officers, the hiring agency must complete a background investigation, a medical and psychological examination by licensed practitioners. For jobs in county correctional facilities or department of corrections, the procedures may vary between agencies. A rule of thumb would be to expect very similar requirements. Some jails also certify their officers as Peace Officers. With respect to above, the Police Academy Program of the Technical College of the Rockies advises that entrance into any TCR course of study or subsequent graduation is no guarantee explicit or implied that a student is employable. Further, should a student be unable to be placed and/or remain in the required course(s), neither TCR nor its employees accept responsibility in respect to the student s fulfillment of this program requirement toward graduation. Further, the student is advised that almost all jobs are of a civil or career service nature. The TCR is not involved in the hiring process until after the student has successfully completed the entry level testing, and the hiring agency is conducting the background investigation. I have read and understand the above information.
