Marine Corps history November 1 November 1918: 4th Marine Brigade participated in action at Meuse- Argonne. 1 November 1943: I Marine Amphibious Corps landed at Cape Torokina on Bougainville; the 3rdMarDiv landed on Bougainville. 1 November 1956: The 3d Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment helped evacuate Americans from Alexandria, Egypt. 2 November 1931: VS-14M on the USS Saratoga and VS-15M on the USS Lexington were the first Marine carrier-based squadrons. 2 November 1962: LtCol John H. Glenn (first American to orbit the earth and the world's only septuagenarian astronaut) became first Marine pilot awarded the Cunningham Trophy. 3 November 1943: A detachment of the 3d Raider Battalion occupied Torokina Island, Solomon Islands, in support operations at Bougainville. 3 November 1950: Chinese Communists attacked the 1st Marine Division northwest of Hungnam, Korea. 4 November 1948: Col Katherine Towle became the first director of women Marines as regulars and not reservists. 4 November 1976: The first Marine Corps Marathon kicked off in Washington, DC.
