3 Snug Harbor s The Beacon October 2000 CHRISTMAS PARTY The location and date for the Christmas Party has changed. The party is now on the 14 th of December at the Moose Lodge on Route 3 in Merritt Island. During the meeting in October, Snug Harbor was again invited to come to the Naval Ordnance Test Unit Christmas Party, just in case this new date or location was not acceptable. It was voted to still attend. The Moose Lodge is an excellent location for this party, very large, it could hold up to 500 people. We will not feel crowded. It is located about three blocks north of 528, on Route 3, on the right as you travel north. Much of the planning is still underway. Such as, Naval Ordnance Test Unit asked for a three entree meal and is waiting for a response before making public the menu. They are also trying to get the Navy Band, which did an exceptional job at the Submarine Ball. If not, there will be a DJ. The target price for tickets will be less than $20.00 per person. Tickets will go on sale before the end of October. A head count will not be necessary, everyone needs to have tickets purchased two weeks before the Christmas Party so that the correct amount of entrees can be ordered. Dress code will be a casual as possible so that as many of the young sailors and family will attend. The clothing must be tasteful, no jeans, no T-shirts. We expect everyone to dress accordingly. We want to get as many people there as possible. The more--- the merrier. Please make plans to attend this event. I will have the Calling Committee call everyone as soon as the menu and tickets are available and to find out if you plan on going CASUALTIES IN THE INCIDENT ON USS COLE The Navy announced today (14 th of October) the following casualties in the incident on USS Cole: Killed in the incident were: Electronics Technician First Class Richard Costelow, Morrisville, Pa. 4 Snug Harbor s The Beacon October 2000 NATHANIEL GREENE CEREMONIAL SITE Here is the latest on the Ceremonial Submarine Sail at NOTU. The sail of the USS Nathaniel Greene, SSBN 636, will commence construction late in October. The base primary contractor at the Cape has agreed to do the primary project, including foundation, welding, some preservation, rigging, and crane support services. But there will be plenty of other things that will have to be done to make this area presentable. Captain Sheffield, NOTU's CO still wants this to be a community involved project. What those projects will be, is still in the planning stages. February of next year is the projected completion time. If anyone out there wishes to assist in any way with this project, contact me at (321) 853-1251 or (321) 631-7470 and e-mailed at SPP511@SSP.NAVY.MIL or jpyatt@cfl.rr.com. Very Respectfully, MTC(SS) James Pyatt SNUG HARBOR WEB SITE AHOY SHIPMATES, If you haven't visited the Snug Harbor web site at "http://www.ssbn601.com/snugharbor" recently, you are in for a real treat. Check it out and notice all of the neat changes that Tim VeArd has made which show people's pictures, has all sorts of graphs, ways to look up different categories such as "Holland Club", Life Members", search by Rank/Rate, Zip Code, etc. If you haven't submitted your pictures yet and would like to do so, send a "before" and "after" photo to Tim VeArd, P.O. Box 33666, Indialantic, Fl. 32903-0666 and he will post them. If you want the pictures returned, be sure and include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. I now have a digital camera and will have it at all future meetings to take pictures of members and events for posting in our newsletters. NAVAL SUBMARINE LEAGUE We are still looking for interested personnel who would like to join the Naval Submarine League. If you are interested, please let me know and I will send you an application. The dues are $25 per year for retirees and $15 per year for active duty. Membership in the Naval Submarine League also gets you a subscription to "The Submarine Review" plus an annual Directory of members. The only qualification to join is to be an ardent supporter of having a Strong Submarine Force. Have a Laugh GREAT UNSUNG MOMENTS IN SUBMARINES This one's mostly for the bubbleheads out there, those with a sense of humor anyway which is most of 'em I've ever met. 1. 23 August 1759 - David Bushnell experiences the first total loss of propulsion on board his submerged TURTLE when he gets a charleyhorse in his right thigh. Propulsion is restored after 12 minutes of vigorous muscle massage, assisted by a good pull on a bottle of rum. Maybe a couple, we're not sure. 2. 19 September 1942 - Following a festive reception at the Pearl Harbor Officer's Club, Lt. John Hershburger is ignored by his crew while standing on the Conn shouting, "Shut the hatches! Dive without me!". It is several minutes before the Executive Officer can point out that not only is the boat in drydock but the "Japanese dive bombers" are only Pearl Harbor pigeons. 3. 11 June 1959 - An Electric Boat master welder, when told of the Navy's plans to cut a submarine in two pieces and stick a missile compartment in, said, "You want what???". 4. Early 1980-82 - Work is delayed for two years on the pre-com submarine Ohio, the Navy's first Trident class sub while rescue crews search for the original crew, last seen in the vicinity of missile tube #33, near sanitary tank #21, inboard of the crew's tennis courts.

5 Snug Harbor s The Beacon October 2000 Silent Service Videos The "Silent Service" videos are still available. These videos are NOT being offered to the general public. Tape #1 First some background; Awhile back I was able to purchase copies of 13 of the 60 or so original episodes of the late 50's series, "Silent Service" originally produced by Adm. Tommy Dykers. The episodes are in black and white, and are quite "grainy" in places while viewed, the sound quality throughout is good. All of these 13 shows have been duplicated onto one long play (EP) VHS tape. They come across pretty much as viewed back 40 some years ago. The 13 episodes include the stories of: the USS Trout, Sculpin, Bergall, Batfish, Tigrone, Gato, Pampanito, Tirante, Tang, Wahoo, Thresher, Spearfish and Jack. Each episode is introduced by Admiral Dykers and usually one of the boat's senior officers is interviewed at the end of each show. Tape #2 We now have available four new, totally viewable - not grainy, "Silent Service" episodes. These new stories are of the Tautog, Bergall (2nd episode), Tinosa and Aspro. Two of these (the Tinosa and Aspro are being transferred directly from their original 16mm films). We ALSO have a most unique 15-20 minute movie attached to the end of this new VHS tape that was made for the Navy Recruiting Office in "1940" called "Submarines at Sea", this one will definitely get your attention. Terrific footage throughout of squadron boats from hull numbers 173 to 187, this footage includes several boats that were later lost in WWII. Footage of the tender, nesting subs, underway, diving, inside, outside, topside, you name it. Unbelievable scenes. Tape #3 This video, the third in our series, features an old Silent Service episode of the USS Triton (SS-201) during her 5 th war patrol. Also on this video is a short film produced by the Navy in 1940 that features our Submarine School in New London. This film shows action shots aboard a few of our "R" boats of the time that were used at the school. Last on this video is another Navy produced short entitled "The Submariners" and features a great deal of footage in and around the USS Shark (SSN-591). A particular section that peaked my interest was some actual motion picture footage of the USS Holland (SS-1) underway, this is the first and only motion film I have ever seen of our Navy's first submarine. Tape #1 is $26.50, #2 is $20 and #3 is $17.95 (all prices INCLUDE shipping). Order all three and save a bit on shipping with a total at $62.00 and they are mailed to you by USPS boxed priority mail. John Clear EMC(SS)USN Ret. 180 Robin Lane Port Ludlow, WA 98365-9522 USS Sealion (SS-315) Homepage = http://www.waypt.com/users/~submarine SUBVETS 2001 DUES 2001 dues are due and payable on or before 31 Dec. 2000. Life Members and Holland Club Members owe $10 Base dues. All others owe $20 ($10 National and $10 Base). You can pay your dues at the Base meetings or mail them to the Base Treasurer, Ray Coons, 2316 Bent Pine Dr., Melbourne, Fl. 32904-9144. (Note. Members who join between 1 Oct and 31 Dec. are paid up for the coming year, but those who join prior to 1 Oct must pay dues for the coming year. This is in accordance with the Constitution and By-Laws). COMBINED DISTRICT 4 SUBVETS INC AND FLORIDA STATE SUB VETS WWII CONVENTION The District 4 Sub Vets Inc and Florida State Sub Vets WWII combined convention for 2001 will be held 1-3 May 2001 at the Plantation Inn and Golf Resort in Crystal River, Fl. (near Tampa). It will be co-hosted by Tang Base of District 4 and Weeki Wachee Chapter of SubVets WWII. Hotel rooms are $70 plus tax. A registration form along with a schedule of events is attached to this newsletter. These conventions are always well attended and are a lot of fun. If you have never attended one, you don t know what you are missing. Until next time... keep a Zero Bubble AHOOOOOOOOOGA
