ABOUT THE BARU SAHIB Over a hundred year ago in 1906, His Holiness Sant Attar Singh Ji Mastuane Wale had shared his divine vision with his spiritual follower Sant Teja Singh Ji MA, LLB, AM (Harvard) about a sacred place in the Himalayan region of erstwhile Nahan state (now known as Baru Sahib ) where many sages and seers had meditated on the Divine Name. The place was also blessed by Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji during his visit to Nahan state. Sant Attar Singh Ji had desired that the place should be established as Spiritual Centre for the educational institutions imparting value based education combined with modern scientific education on the pattern of old Gurukuls like Nalanda and Takshashila Universities of the past. As ordained, Sant Teja Singh Ji revealed the Divine Valley Baru Sahib in 1956 to his spiritual disciple Baba Iqbal Singh Ji and later purchased the entire Baru village of 460 acres from Thakur Joginder Singh, the owner of the land. Sant Teja Singh Ji visited Baru Sahib in 1959 at the age of 82 along with many highly educated devotees. During his second visit to Baru Sahib a small mud structure Gurudwara was constructed and Shri Guru Granth Sahib was ensconced. During the prayer he prophesied that with the will of God this place would turn into a great spiritual centre from where schools, colleges and a divine University will impart value based education from Nursery class up to the Ph.D. level. Sant Teja Singh Ji established a trust in 1965 with his six devotees. It was registered as The Kalgidharh Trust on October 22, 1982 by Baba Iqbal Singh Ji, The Director Agriculture, Himachal Pradesh, to promote World Peace through spiritual and value based education and universal brotherhood. To further the cause of The Kalgidhar Trust, the first Akal Academy was established at Baru Sahib in 1986. The outstanding model has been translated to network of more than 129 Akal Academies and 2 Universities running in various Northern states of India. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY Eternal University is a non-profit multi-disciplinary private university established in 2009 through Government of Himachal Pradesh Act. Situated in the valley of divine peace known as Baru Sahib, Eternal University has a sylvan campus on the Rajgarh to Nahan road. The University is well connected by road to Chandigarh (130 km), Shimla (110 km), Solan (64 km) and Rajgarh (26 km). The nearest airport is Chandigarh. The University has established state-of-art teaching facilities including modern lecture theatres, modern laboratories and online teaching tools. Eternal University is well equipped with laboratory, library, hostel and bank facilities. With the present pace already acquired the University looks forward to excel in front line areas of teaching and research. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT Department of Food Technology was established as a part of the Akal College of Agriculture along with Biotechnology and Agriculture with an objective to meet the growing need to educate students about value addition, processing and preservation of agriculture produce with improved technologies. The department has established three state of the art laboratories (Food Chemistry and Analysis, Food instrumentation and Quality Control and Food Microbiology) and three Pilot Plants facilities (Extrusion unit, Bakery unit and Fruit & Vegetable Processing unit) equipped with sophisticated modern instruments purchased through financial support from the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Govt. of India. Faculty members of the department are actively working on various research areas including development of functional foods for different age groups, nutritional evaluation of fruits, vegetables, cereals and development of suitable processing techniques. The department is currently offering B.Tech and M.Sc in Food Technology. ABOUT THE CONFERENCE Food Technology is gaining very fast momentum in India with the increased demand of processed and packaged food products. Consumers are now aware about the importance of safe, nutritious and healthy food products. To meet the consumer expectations and food requirement of increasing population, food industry need innovative ideas in the field of food processing and preservation. Indian government is also increasing the investment in this sector by setting up food parks. Considering the importance of the subject, organizers announce the National Conference on Advances in Food Science and Technology: (AFST-2017) to bring the delegates from academia and industry on a common platform and discuss the innovative ideas and recent advances in the field.
