Shawnee Estab. 1856 Spring 2017 Pop. 65,795 Tidy Town (Bulky Item Pick Up) and Drop Off Tidy Town is right around the corner and this year, we are adding a few improvements. A third weekend is being added to help the trash haulers handle the added growth in western Shawnee. Here is when your items will be picked up for Tidy Town. Saturday, April 29: Residents living anywhere from Switzer (east City limit) to east side of Pflumm Saturday, May 6: Residents living anywhere between west side of Pflumm to east side of 435 Saturday, May 13: Residents living anywhere from west side of 435 to western City limits You will be able to set out five big items on the curb. Types of items include the following: Furniture Mattresses Appliances - check with hauler about quantity and types Push lawn mowers with no fuel or oil Up to 4 foot rolls of carpet that are securely tied and weigh less than 50 pounds. Two rolls count as one item. If you have specific questions about what items can or cannot be accepted for Tidy Town, contact your trash hauler. All items must be placed at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your pick-up day. Special Reminder: If you are a Waste Management customer, you will need to set one of your Waste Management carts at the end of the curb so they know to pick up your items. If you do not do this, your items will not be collected. This year we are adding a NEW drop-off site option to help accommodate other items. The drop-off site, located at 435 and Johnson Drive will be open to all Shawnee residents from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. on all three Saturdays, regardless of who your trash hauler is. Here are a few more important notes. A drop-off site will be available for certain items but limited to one truck or trailer load of the following: Wood fencing, concrete building material, rocks and soil, construction or demolition materials like drywall, lumber and roofing material Other rigid items four feet or longer Brush but no grass clippings You will be required to show proof of residency at the drop-off site. A GOOD WORD FROM Mayor Michelle Distler Dear Residents, Spring is almost here and with that comes a soon-to-be packed calendar of fun community events. I always feel this is a time when our City comes together and shows the true spirit of being a tight-knit community. We ll kick off the Spring season with a bit of luck o the Irish at the 35 th annual St. Patrick s Day Parade on Sunday, March 12. Downtown Shawnee will turn into a sea of green as young and old alike line the streets to get a glimpse of their favorite float or to snag a piece of candy. The theme of this year s parade is The Shawnee Irish Rock. There is still time to get in on the fun and join the parade on your own float or feel free to get a group to dance a jig as you stroll through Shawnee. We have lots of information on the parade, the Special Olympics Heroes Pull and Sister Cities Duck Race online at www.cityofshawnee.org. It will soon be time to shake off the cold and roll up your sleeves to get going on some yard work! On Saturday, April 1, you can attend the 8 th Annual Johnson County Healthy Yards Expo at the Shawnee Civic Centre. It s a free event that will get your green thumbs geared up to learn new ways to take care of lawns and gardens. Experts will showcase eco-friendly techniques, provide free soil tests and highlight why rain barrels could change your yard. Visitors will have a chance to win door prizes and the first 500 people will get a variety of native plants to try out for free. Spring cleaning is right around the corner! Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 15, for the Spring Recycling Event. You will be able to shred any old files you have, safely get rid of latex paint, donate old bikes so they can be rebuilt and given to those in need, and there will also be electronics recycling. We partner with several organizations, including the City of Merriam, for this event that will be located in the Lee Jeans parking lot near 67 th and Lee Drive in Merriam. We have details posted online so you can see a full list of items that will be accepted, hours and suggested donations per item. One of my favorite things about Spring is the Farmers Market. It opens Saturday, May 6, in the parking lot outside City Hall at Johnson Drive and Nieman Road. You ll want to see why Good Produce Starts Here and you can pick up all kinds of fresh vegetables and other goodies that you can t get anywhere else. We ll be making a splash in May when the City pools open on Saturday, May 27, for Memorial Day weekend. You can buy your season pool pass to the Thomas A. Soetaert Aquatic Center and Splash Cove at the Jim Allen Aquatic Center starting April 1 at the Civic Centre. Be sure to check out the flip side of your CityLine for so many more options of great classes and workshops for you and your family at the Civic Centre. GOOD TIMES Shawnee Irish Rock Shake off the winter blues, don your Irish Green and join us on Sunday, March 12, for the Shawnee St. Patrick s Parade! This will be the 35 th Annual Parade, hosted by the Irish American Club of Johnson County. Dream up a cool float to highlight your neighborhood, clan, or business. This year s $10 entry fee will help fund our donation to the Shawnee Police and Fire Departments' Heroes Pull, which benefits Kansas Special Olympics. Parade line-up begins at 11:30 a.m. at Johnson Drive and Monrovia. The parade begins at 1:00 p.m. and proceeds down Johnson Drive from Monrovia east to Nieman Road. The awards ceremony is held immediately after the parade at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 11221 Johnson Drive. Winners must be present to pick up their plaques and cash prizes. The parade is sponsored by the Irish American Club of Johnson County and the Shawnee St. Patrick s Parade Committee and many wonderful area businesses. Police Department Outfitted with Body Cameras You may have heard that Shawnee police officers will be outfitted with body-worn cameras by the end of this year. The City Council accepted a Federal grant last November to help pay for the new technology, along with training and technical assistance when it comes to best practices for the body-worn camera program. Body-worn cameras provide several advantages, including bolstering transparency and accountability, enhancing evidentiary value and the ability to educate the public on the difficult situations officers deal with. There are, of course, limitations as well. For example, cameras don't always see things the way people do. Sometimes officers will see things the camera didn't and vice versa. Video footage doesn't have the sense of touch. When an officer feels someone tense up, which could be an indication of resistance, the camera doesn't interpret that. It is important to understand that cameras serve as an aid in providing another piece of information, rather than having the ability to tell the whole story. We are modeling our Department policy after the International Association of Chiefs of Police guidelines. We are making it a priority to have ongoing communication about the body-worn camera program and will be updating as we make more plans for that.
