STRATEGIC GOAL #2: Campus Life Foster an intentional culture of campus engagement. STRATEGIC GOAL #3: Intentional Enrollment Management Strategically recruit and retain students by growing existing programs and creating new programs of strategic emphasis or demonstrated demand. STRATEGIC GOAL #5: Scholarly Activity Recognize and support diverse faculty and student research activities. UNIT GOALS: 1. Support faculty in grant development and receipt of grant awards. 2. Support faculty in their scholarly activity. 3. Increase the research profile of USF Sarasota-Manatee. 4. Cultivate student-faculty research collaboration. Plan Resulting from Analysis of Assessment (Draft plan for review submitted by Jenni Mariano, Cindy Kish, Melanie Le Clainche) OUTCOMES Unit Goal Means of Assessing Outcomes Assessment Data Initial public focus could be on 4 inclusive areas that emphasize USFSM s strengths, college organization, faculty expertise, and unique position in the community, as well as reflect incoming USF System research strategic plan (see attached draft under review with ADR s). As information on faculty research is collected, more inclusive language or categories could be added/modified while remaining strategic. Vice Chancellor s Response (Dr. Terry Osborn) 1) STEM 2) Inter/Transdisciplinary 3) Community engaged (broadly defined). 4.) Innovations in Business, Hospitality, Technology, Other Outcome 1. Increased research grant productivity. 1 Increase in dollars of research grants submitted. GOALS: 2015-16 $500,000 2016-17 $750,000 2017-18 $1,250,000 2018-19 $2,000,000 2019-20 $2,500,000 2015-16 USFSM Proposals College Sponsor Proposal Amt. (Robinson) Sarasota County School Board (Reck) American Educational Research Assoc. (Sadler) $131,250 $35,000 Mariano Proposed Fall16/Spr17 Strategies: One-on-one meetings and coaching of faculty to select and encourage grants, and grants strategy development that aligns with their annual reviews and research goals. Emphasis on junior faculty applications, and possibly, partnering of senior faculty with junior faculty, multi-faculty interdisciplinary grants, institutional-faculty grants, and Excellent support items 2

Fall 16 grants workshop and info. session (Jenni & Cindy) and open door faculty question/answer assistance. Continued sharing with faculty of grants search databases. (current, ongoing) (Mariano) $2499.00 Total $4,821,697 1 Increase in dollars of research grants received. GOALS: 2015-16 $100,000 2016-17 $150,000 2017-18 $250,000 2018-19 $400,000 2015-16 USFSM s Awarded (To date 6/15/16 reflects decisions received on the above) College Sponsor Proposal Amt. USF New Researcher (Robinson) See above strategies are the same. We won t set goals at this stage for effectiveness rate and will continue to welcome all grants. However, we will specifically encourage grants with higher overhead (i.e., usually federal negotiated Very good plan & leadership 3

2019-20 $500,000 (Dollar amounts to be adjusted as needed) (Bouchard) (Coy) rates = about 49%) and assess effectiveness, assessed by USF Tampa). Sarasota County School Board (Reck) $131,250 (Mariano) $2499.00 USF-Travel (Perry) $1,729 Total $172,478 Note: USFSM s grant success rate was 52.5% (Decisions are on $328,496 to date) Note: 2014-2015 Effective rate was 5.1% 2015 2016 was 7.8%. Increased by 2.7% (Effective rate is %age of indirect costs). Note: USFSM faculty compete effectively for system awards. Our faculty were awarded 6.9% of all International Travel s in Fall15/Spr16 cycle and between 16.6% and 25% of all Awards (noting discrepancy in USFSM and USF Tampa data, and mislabeling in Tampa data of 2 UFSM faculty as Tampa faculty). 4

Currently, community-based grants/projects are based on Carnegie definition and are tracked by Tampa in internal forms. See above same strategies as grant applications and awards. Encourage/Support current faculty initiatives: Robinson Writing Retreat. Continue to monitor 2015: 63 Continue to collect this data via contact of FCR with faculty. However, USF Tampa also has a website where faculty can enter these data. Excellent plans. Also, Rick s Research Café. Support, research and investigate support needs for research analysis and design. Examples: software, SOMA. Possibly pilot and research support system such as CORE or In-House. Increase in number of peer-reviewed scholarly presentations 2015: 92 Encourage/Support current faculty initiatives: Rick s Research Cafe Excellent plans. 5

Outcome 3. Tenure and promotion guidelines edited to reflect scholarly expectations. 2 Tenure and promotion guidelines revised. There was no change to scholarly activity in university guidelines for tenure and promotion. Specific criteria for tenure and promotion is addressed in college guidelines, which did not change this year. (Source: Sarah Fayard on 6/1/16) Need to Brainstorm: Potentially include community-engaged research in T&P and annual review guidelines. Continue to support Community Engagement. Outcome 4. Increase the number of students engaged in facultydirected research 4 Increase % of students engaged in faculty research SP 2016 Research Symposium: 18 2015-16 Honors theses started: 7 2015-16 Honors theses completed: 4 Biology/Telang: 9 Mote/Post Docs: 5 Encourage/Support current initiatives: Undergraduate Research Symposium (pending continued available support) Encourage/Support inclusion of USFSM undergraduates in research grant applications, and building of USF Tampa doctoral/usfsm undergraduate collaborative teams on such grants. Continue to advocate for student research support. Gather data from faculty about their research with students. For example: directed research projects, funded or not funded and publications. Include an additional outcome for 16-17 plan: Research communication and publicity. For example, Manatee TV Series Fall 16 and encourage faculty initiatives (website page). Chancellor s Response (Dr. Sandra Stone): Good job in supporting and encouraging research activity. Good move to establish a faculty coordinator and strongly support addition of new grants manager to provide additional support. I recommend setting more specific goals on other outcome measures similar to the dollar amounts set for grants submitted. 6
