What made you decide to become a nurse? I knew since I was a child that I wanted to be a nurse. I love to help people. How did you climb the ladder to be in the position you are in as of right now? Climbing the ladder: I was a NICU nurse at Metro for 2 years and decided to become a nurse practitioner. Metrohealth actually had their own NP program. It was a good program and combined our classes with CWRU professors. I have been a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner since 1984. (I'm old!) I have worked at a few hospitals over the years but have been with CCF since 2000. I'm credentialed to work at Fairview,Hillcrest, Main Campus, and Medina Hospital.
What are some skills vital to this career? Skills: Critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration with other medical team members. Our skills as NNP include: intubation, thoracentesis, arterial line placement and puncture, umbilical vein and artery line placement, lumbar puncture, and picc line placement. What is the most rewarding part of being an RN? Rewarding part of being an RN: Very simply making a difference. Helping people get better or in some cases taking the best care If you were to interview a candidate for a registered nurse position, what are some key characteristics would you look for? Compassion, patience, determination, common sense, and kindness.
How can a high schooler, like me, prepare themselves for the job or college courses regarding nursing? High school prep: definitely science based classes, math, computer skills, good social skills, and time management. What college did you attend? Education: Nursing school including college courses, NP program at Metrohealth I was grandfathered in due to my years of experience and certification. Current NP's are required to have their Master's degree and some are getting their Doctorate in Nursing.
Reflection After completing project16, I feel much more prepared for what the future may bring especially regarding college. I have learned what courses will lead me to be better equipped for a career in nursing, including microbiology, anatomy and biology. My confidence in becoming a nurse has been boosted due to the high outlook percentage. I also feel more prepared for what to expect and how to hold myself in a professional interview. I think that this project was helpful for me especially before college though it would have been even more helpful if I had done this earlier.
