Volume 3, Issue 1 January, 2014 Arthur R Meyer Jr Detachment 472 Marine Corps League Tallahassee, Florida Robert Stansbury Commandant mcl.1075@gmail.com 850-766-1944 COMMANDANT S MESSAGE Happy New Year! I pray everyone had a blessed Christmas and enjoyed sharing with family and friends. Congratulations are in order for those who helped with our first Toys for Tots Campaign! It was a huge success, thanks to the leadership of Rodney, Annie, and Marc. I have received many compliments from people who have experienced Toys for Tots Campaigns with other Marine Corps Reserve units. There were many heartwarming stories, heard and witnessed by our volunteers, which made the whole Campaign worth all the hard work. Hopefully, this will become a meaningful annual event for Detachment #472. I hope you will attend the January meeting (Jan. 16, 2014) as Rodney McCoy will give us a summary report on the Campaign. Back in June, we set a goal of 25 new members. As of today, we have recruited 13 new members leaving only 12 more to be recruited. We can meet our goal and more! (Please go to Page 2) 1 Editor s Corner by Dick Jugenheimer jughead41@gmail.com Home 850-893-3295 Cell 850-509-0273 The theme in our church for the last few days has been the family. My wife and I got to spend some precious moments with a daughter and her family in Everett, WA, and also with a daughter and her family in Tallahassee. Contrasting with these visits and parties, which I have recorded with a camera, my newest family is Marine Corps League, Detachment #472. This is one of the hardest-working groups of men and women that I have ever encountered. Some of my camera work is blurry, caused partly by my own nervousness and partly because these people do not stand still they are always on the move. And being in MCL #472 has reminded me that the best family I have been a member of since 1959 is the U.S. Marine Corps! When I left active duty in 1965 to attend college, the only person I told about my 6 years service was the Army colonel who insisted that his ROTC unit was mandatory for all male students. My DD-214 disabused him of that notion. On Friday afternoons, I would watch my fellow students try to drill or march, wearing uniforms that were all different (thus not uniform). It was hilarious and several times Col. Ballentine caught me laughing at his troops. They were never part of my family. Dick J.
Senior Vice Commandant s Message The New Year is upon us and I wish all of you a happy and prosperous year. As most of you know, the Toys for Tots Campaign was a great success! There were many happy kids in Tallahassee this Christmas. Again, I would like to thank the Detachment for the outpouring of help from the members for the Reeves family. We donated over $700 in cash, along with toys, to see them through their hardship. The New Year will bring elections for new officers to lead the Detachment. There will be a Nomination Committee to find and nominate those Marines who are willing to serve. Also, if necessary, nominations from the floor will be accepted. If you interested in serving the Detachment in an elected office, please make it known to the Nomination Committee. The following four offices must be filled: Commandant, Senior Vice Commandant, Junior Vice Commandant, and Judge Advocate. In addition, after the election, a number of appointed positions must be filled. Please consider a post for the coming year. I am looking forward to serving with each of you in the next year, and I hope we will have another banner year in 2014! Wynn J. Black (Commandant s Message continued from Page 1) Just speak up and let the people of Tallahassee know that the Marine Corps League is active in this town! You can start by bringing a prospective new member to the January meeting. These prospects can meet Detachment #472 and witness the initiation of six new members. See you on the 16th! Bob Stansbury 2

January 1, 2014 Marines of Detachment #472: Our first attempt to continue the Toys for Tots Campaign, as a Detachment, appears to have been a huge success. Many people who have been involved in previous Toys for Tots Campaigns told us that this year s Campaign was one of the smoothest and best organized that they have experienced. This, of course, was made possible by the 80 plus volunteers who contributed their time and talent. We want to thank all the members of the Detachment, and their spouses, for their hard work. And we wish to thank the large number of people outside the Detachment who worked or helped financially. The one significant number from the Toys for Tots Campaign is that over 4,000 children in need received toys in Leon, Gadsden, Jefferson, Franklin, Liberty, and Gulf counties. The ladies of the Women s Ministry at the Wacissa Pentecostal Holiness Church in Wacissa, FL, held a party for the Toys for Tots Campaign. The party was headed up by the Ministry s President, Pam Fenwick, and was attended by several of the Ministry s ladies. Refreshments and drinks were provided along with several hundred dollars worth of toys for our Campaign. Liz and I (pictured) attended the party and we loaded the toys in our car. We had a trunk full! There were toys for youngsters as well as for the older kids. Fun was had by all. We are very grateful to the Women s Ministry for their support of our Toys for Tots Campaign. The ladies deserve many thanks from the Arthur J. Meyer, Jr. Detachment #472 of the Marine Corps League! Liz and Wynn 4

He graduated from St. Catherine Catholic High School and enrolled in pre-med at the University of Wisconsin. He was a member of the Naval Reserve for one year. On May 24, 1952, Jack was on a patrol with Easy Co. when a mine exploded, injuring him and Lt. William Hutchinson. The explosion killed PFC Dale Jensen. Jack s wounds were serious enough to cause his evacuation to the hospital ship, Consolation, at Inchon. Then he was sent by train to Pusan, where he was transferred to the hospital ship, Haven, which took him to a Naval Hospital in Japan. Jack would return to Korea, in August, 1952, where he was assigned to a Battalion Aid Station for the next two months. He was then assigned to Medical Company C. Jack would leave Korea in April, 1953, going by way of Camp Pendleton, again, on his way to Great Lakes Naval Base. He was discharged from the Navy in March, 1955. Jack worked for Johnson Wax Company for a short time while he went to the University of Wisconsin, to finish up with his degree. After graduation, Jack moved to Florida in1961. Life membership costs only $150 if your are 61 or older and eliminates the headache of remaining current with your dues. For those members paying dues annually please, please make your check payable to the Detachment and submit to the paymaster not directly to National MCL.
