The University of San Francisco is recognized nationally and internationally as a premier Jesuit, Catholic urban university with a global perspective. Its mission is to educate leaders who will fashion a more humane and just world. The University offers undergraduate, graduate and professional students the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as persons and professionals, and the values and sensitivity congruent with the Jesuit ideal of being men and women for others. The School of Nursing and Health Professions encompasses Nursing, Public Health, Clinical Psychology, Integrated Behavioral Health Sciences, Health Informatics and Health Care Simulation. Established as San Francisco's first institution of higher education in 1855, the University of San Francisco presently serves approximately 11,000 students in Arts and Sciences, Management, Education, Law, Nursing and Health Professions. The University is a diverse, private, Catholic and Jesuit institution that seeks candidates who will contribute positively to the promotion of its mission. The natural beauty and topographical diversity of northern California offers outstanding recreational opportunities. The new Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Professions (https://www.usfca.edu/nursing/programs) will be joining a dynamic group of deans. This group has been working together energetically to promote the mission and vision of USF. They have achieved notable success and are extremely skilled academic administrators.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION The Dean serves as the Chief Academic Officer of the School of Nursing and Health Professions, is responsible for all day-to-day activities within the School, and serves as an Executive Officer of the University. The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs and serves as a member of the Provost's Council and the USF President's Leadership Team. Procuring external funding for the School to support its many programs and activities and assisting faculty in obtaining external grants and research support. Working effectively with the larger health care community, as well as an external advisory council, to further the School's mission and goals by enhancing its visibility to and relationships with these communities. Developing an effective enrollment vision for an increasingly competitive and rapidly changing health care environment. The Dean's role in matters of promotion and tenure includes significant responsibility for guiding and mentoring faculty. This role is formalized through the Academic Career Prospectus (ACP) process. All full-time faculty in those schools under the Collective Bargaining Agreement submit annually an ACP, which "provides an opportunity for faculty to discuss with the Dean their contributions in the areas of teaching, research and service and to collaboratively develop an academic agenda for the upcoming year." In addition, it is one of five universities in the nation to be honored as a 2012 Higher Education Civic Engagement Award recipient, recognizing the university s outstanding contributions to community, leadership, professional achievement, and enrichment of student learning. The University of San Francisco is also recognized as one of the most ethnically diverse institutions in the country; it reflects San Francisco s rich multiculturalism and promotes a highly diverse student body. Over 37 percent of the university s students are first generation college students; US News and World Report ranks USF as 8 th among national universities for student ethnic diversity and 7 th in international student enrollment. USF students come from more than 90 countries. In addition to its campus in San Francisco, USF has a long, distinguished history of providing students the opportunity to further their education through its branch campuses in Northern and Southern California. These branch campuses are located in downtown San Francisco site as well as in Sacramento, Santa Rosa, San Jose, Pleasanton, and Orange County. Full time and part time faculty in the College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Management, the School of Education and the School of Nursing and Health Professions are organized as the University of San Francisco Faculty Association, an AFT affiliated unit. USF s talented faculty recently garnered more national awards and grants than at any time in the university s history. THE SCHOOL OF NURSING AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS The University of San Francisco's School of Nursing and Health Professions began in the 1940s as a cooperative effort with the Sisters of Mercy, so that registered nurses from nearby St. Mary's Hospital could earn their baccalaureate degrees. The four-year baccalaureate program was initiated in 1954 and accredited when the first class graduated in 1958. The School began offering a Master of Science in Nursing in the fall of 1984. In 2010, the School, taking seriously the Institute of Medicine Report on The Future of Nursing http://thefutureofnursing.org/recommendations, regarding the call for expanding opportunities for nurses to lead and diffuse collaboration (Recommendation #2) and preparing nurses to lead change (Recommendation #7), actively started on a trajectory to add health professions programing to its portfolio. As a result of a commitment to health professions education, then USF President Fr. Stephen A. Privett named a President s Commission on Health Professions Education that was charged to build on the stature of the USF nursing programs to make recommendations to advance excellence in health professions education by developing additional educational options at USF. The first non-nursing health profession program was the Master of Public Health (MPH). -4-

It was with this addition that the School changed its name to School of Nursing and Health Professions (SONHP). The MPH program graduated its first class in 2013 and received full Council of Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation as soon as it was eligible. Last fall, the doctoral degree in clinical psychology (PsyD) and integrated Master of Science in Behavioral Health (MSBH) programs, both with a focus on behavioral health and an emphasis on underserved populations, were started. In January 2014, the Health Informatics program was launched and fall, 2014, the new Master of Science in Healthcare Simulation was started. All of these health professions programs are part of the SONHP strategy to educate future health professionals with an interprofessional approach and move forward in creating a learning environment that prepares the graduate for the real world. As a result, the departments in the SONHP have nursing and non-nursing degree options clustered around contemporary ways to conceptualize health, health education, health care, and clinical practice. The School of Nursing and Health Professions follows the University of San Francisco s mission to provide a liberal arts education rooted in the Jesuit tradition of respect for diversity, service rooted in justice, and openness to global perspectives. In supporting this mission, students in the School of Nursing and Health Professions are part of one of the most exciting and diverse cities for progressive health care delivery in the nation. Graduates serve as knowledgeable, innovative, and experienced practitioners in health care. School Vision The School of Nursing and Health Professions at the University of San Francisco advances the mission of the university by preparing health professionals to address the determinants of health, promote policy and advocacy, and provide a moral compass to transform the delivery of health care in order to further equity and positively influence quality, access, and the promotion of population health in order to further equity and positively influence quality, delivery, and access. School Mission The mission of the School of Nursing and Health Professions is to advance nursing and health professions education within the context of the Jesuit tradition. The school uses dynamic and innovative approaches in undergraduate and graduate education to prepare professionals for current and future practice domains. The goal is to effectively link classroom, clinical, and field experiences with expectations for competence, compassion, and justice in health care, protection and promotion within the context of the highest academic standards.
